Food and Fitness When You’re Sick

As we approach the winter season many of us are finding ourselves battling annoying coughs, sniffles and runny noses. Sickness can often sideline our commitment to a healthy lifestyle. As tempting as it may be to wallow and indulge, your best bet is to stay the course while limiting your fitness routine, being mindful not to compromise your journey on the road to recovery.

When we are sick we quickly reach for the easy meal or comfort food. It’s ironic that just when our body needs us to be at our most healthy, our mind talks us into spoiling ourselves. The times when I’ve been under the weather, I make a big heaping pot of soup. I add all the veggies that I love and toss in some chicken for good measure. The pot of soup will sit conveniently in the fridge for a quick heating when I need some comfort food. Jazz it up with spices and satisfy that need for crunch with whole grain chips or crackers.

As for your exercise, most physicians will caution you to restrict your exercise routine while sick. The Mayo Clinic suggests that you can still engage in moderate exercise if you have a cold but no fever. They suggest that you exercise if your symptoms are above the neck, but be prepared to reduce the intensity if necessary. If you are having symptoms below the neck like congestion, cough or upset stomach, then you should avoid exercising.

The best way to stay healthy and fit is by remaining committed to your body and it’s overall health. Don’t be a hero or try to treat symptoms that have overstayed their welcome on your own. The best way to a speedy recovery and full return to your regular routine is by treating and caring for your body in the best possible and timely manner!
