Diet Butler iPhone App Review

Diet iPhone AppThere are a lot of apps out there that are designed to help you lose weight by taking the guess work out of counting calories and proposing healthy meal plans. Diet Butler for the iPhone is no different, but also comes with alerts to help you remember your healthy plans.

However, there are some draw backs to this app. First off, there’s very little information on how to actually use the app: no instructions, no tutorial. It took quite a bit of clicking around to figure out how everything works. When I first opened the Diet Butler, I was prompted to fill out my stats…using metric measurements. I can see this being an annoyance to users in the US who don’t happen to be able to do unit conversions in their heads. Once you have entered your information, the calculator then decides how many calories per day you should consume.

Next, I filled out my meal plan. There are a number of pre-set choices that include a recipe and the number of calories. You can also edit you meal plan to include as many snacks as you like. You can also manually enter any “recipes” that do not appear in the list. Users also have the option of selecting a entire day’s worth of meals. Next you set the time you wish to eat each meal, which set an alarm to remind you.

10 Worst Foods for Heartburn

Orange, Lemon, LimeMost people know that citrus, alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods can all trigger heartburn. But did you know that fatty foods, like steak or cheese, can also trigger that burning sensation in your chest? Check out this list from WebMD to learn what foods are the most likely triggers. Remember, too much of any food can also lead to acid reflux.

1. Citrus Fruit

Acid is the number one dietary culprit leading to heartburn. Oranges and grapefruits are particularly bad, along with juice made from these fruits, when consumed on an empty stomach.

Ad Spending Up for Weight-Loss Brands

Jenny Craig and Weight Wachers AdsThe three biggest brands in weight loss, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and Nurtisystem, are gearing up for diet season 2024 with new programs and ad campaigns. Although these companies struggled to recruit new customers during the economic downturn, they’re betting on winning customers back as financial conditions improve.

“A lot of people have traded down to junk food,” said market researcher John LaRosa, of Marketdata Enterprises. “The result of that is people are going to be heavier than ever before. And when they do come back to weight loss programs, they are going to end up staying longer than in past years.”

Nutrisystem is reaching out to the public with new ads that feature real users describing their successes with the popular meal-delivery service (see video below), a departure from their celebrity-driven advertising. “We let our consumers really tell our story,” says Chris Terrill, the company’s chief marketing officer. “It’s a bit different for us, and it’s in line with our research.”

The 17 Day Diet

This one broke out on the scene with the book’s release in November 2024 on Dr. Phil. Dr. Mike Moreno wrote the book to help people kick-start their weight loss, re-learn how to eat via meal plans and 17-minutes a day worth of exercise, and then give them the information they need for on-going maintenance. It’s a cycled way of eating that keeps the metabolism from getting bored and settling in to a status quo.

Weight Watchers PointsPlus

In November 2024, Weight Watchers unveiled the most significant change to its program in 13 years. Using the latest in nutritional science along with Weight Watchers’ nearly 50 years of expertise, the new approach allows for clients to make healthier, more satisfying choices. The new PointsPlus calculation includes protein, fiber, fat and carbs, instead of just fiber, fat and calories.

Jillian Michaels

Keep hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is not only vital for normal body functioning, but it helps keep cravings to a minimum.

Add to diet, don’t take away: Try adding the recommended servings of each food group to your diet instead of cutting calories. The ability to maintain a diet is crucial for the long-term weight loss process.

Limit night-time snacks: Make good choices about late night snacking. Obviously, cookies and a large glass of milk is not the way to go. If you do have a late-night craving, snack on a low fat, low calorie food like a piece of fruit.

Why We Get Fat: Weighing In on the Diet Wars

Gary Taubes' 2nd BookIn today’s Health section of The New York Times, Dr. Abigail Zuger writes what is at first glance a review of Gary Taubes’ Why We Get Fat. Digging deeper, one realizes that Zuger has much more to say than a few comments on Taubes’ book, a shorter and more pointed follow-up to his earlier work, Good Calories Bad Calories. Zuger is crying out against the storm of contradicting nutritional information, which she likens to both a war and a cafeteria food-fight.

Low-carb vs. low fat, Atkins vs. Weight Watchers, it’s a familiar battle not only to those slogging through the literature, but to anyone who’s struggled to find sound advice on what to eat and lose weight. “At this point,” writes Zuger, “all eaters, fat or lean, could be forgiven for slamming the door on all expert dietary input, forever.”

Dr. Zuger goes on to discuss the arguments behind the low carb diet recommended by Why We Get Fat, prefacing the information by saying Taubes’ book is as much a “manifesto” as it a document of science journalism. She playfully worries that Taubes will soon introduce his own line of protein bars.

The More Protein The Better is a Common Nutrition Myth

Protein is essential for normal body functioning and crucial to help build and repair muscle tissue after strenuous workout sessions. Protein is defined as organic compounds made of amino acids that are arranged in a linear chain, typically found in meat, fish, nuts, eggs, dairy products, legumes, and protein supplements. They are considered to be the building blocks for your muscles and immune system. Protein can also be used as a form of fuel to provide the body with energy if you are not getting enough fat or carbohydrates, which are the primary energy sources.

The recommended daily value (DV) of protein based on a 2,000 calorie diet is 50 grams. For those who exercise frequently, it is recommended to get .8 to 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. For instance, a 200 pound (90.9 kilogram) male is recommended to intake 72 to 108 grams of protein per day. If you don’t get enough protein in your diet, your immune system may become weakened, you can lose muscle mass, experience growth failure, and even weaken the heart and respiratory system. So, please make sure you are getting enough protein in your daily diet.

Eating a Healthy Diet Prolongs Life in Seniors

We have all heard the phrase “you are what you eat,” and the more research that comes out on eating a nutritious diet, the more it seems that saying is really true! According to a study published in the January 2024 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, those who eat healthy foods live longer than those who don’t.

The major indication of this is that the leading causes of death in Americans has shifted from infectious diseases to chronic diseases, like cardiovascular disease and cancer — illnesses that may be affected by diet. Researchers studied the eating patterns and mortality of more than 2,500 adults between the ages of 70 and 79 over a 10-year period. What did they find? That diets favoring certain foods were associated with longer lives.

Researchers grouped the study participants into six different clusters according to what they ate a lot of: healthy foods; high-fat dairy products; meat, fried foods, and alcohol; breakfast cereal; refined grains; sweets and desserts. The “healthy foods” group ate low-fat dairy products, fruit, whole grains, poultry, fish and vegetables, and had a lower consumption of meat, fried foods, sweets, high-calorie drinks and added fat.
