Healthy Recipes to Cook for Kwanzaa

Most of us know that Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration held in the United States between Christmas and New Years to honor African-American heritage and culture. For most Americans, there is practically no such thing as a celebration without food, so we pulled together some of our favorite recipes for Kwanzaa.

Although Kwanzaa is a relatively new holiday, created in 1966, the foods used to celebrate it are based on old traditions. According to Donna Mintz, a New York City-based personal chef, savory stews and jerk-seasoned meat are excellent additions to your Kwanzaa menu.

What Not to Serve at Your New Year’s Eve Party

High-Calorie cocktailHelp your guests (and yourself) jump start a New Year’s resolution to lose weight by making these healthier party swaps.

Don’t Serve: Super-Sized Sweets

Just because you’re hosting a party doesn’t mean you have to throw out what you know about portion control. People are more likely to overeat when served larger portions. Don’t set out giant cookies that your guests will feel obligated to finish. Also, avoid big bowls of small candies, like M&Ms or Skittles, that make it easy to snack mindlessly.

Instead: Choose candies that are individually wrapped, so you and your guests have to be more aware of eating. Also, consider serving a dessert that’s full of fruit, like yogurt-dipped strawberries.

Don’t Serve: Doritos

People frequently pick on potato chips as the ultimate junk food, but many other kinds of chips are just as unhealthy. A single-serving package of Nacho Cheese flavored Doritos has 150 calories, with 1.5 grams of saturated fat. That’s not even mentioning the long list of additives, including artificial food coloring.

Instead: Why not serve your guests a healthier chip? Blue corn tortilla chips have more protein than regular tortilla chips and can have fewer additives if you go organic. Serve them with fresh salsa.

We Love Siggi’s Yogurt

Yogurt is one of my favorite breakfast choices. It’s easy to eat, requires no cooking, and I can take it with me if I’m running late. (Ahem.) Yogurt is also one of my go-to snacks, especially for my kids, who tend to have blood sugar issues in the afternoon. The problem with many yogurts, though, is the high sugar content. Often, the yogurt has as much sugar as a candy bar – or even more! I look for low sugar content and fruit as opposed to jelly, and I was delighted to discover Siggi’s, made by the Skyr company.

From their website:

“Skyr is the traditional yogurt of Iceland. It is made by incubating skim milk with live active cultures. The whey, the water naturally found in milk, is then strained away to make for a much thicker, creamier, concentrated yogurt. So to make just one cup of Skyr, with all that water going out, you need 3 – 4 times the amount of milk required to make a regular cup of yogurt. As a result of this process Skyr comes out with 2-3 times the protein count of standard yogurt.”

Avoid Holiday-Eating Remorse

Maruchy Lachance is president of Running Ninja!, a lifestyle brand for runners by runners. Running Ninja! offers a wide variety of apparel and gifts for runners to keep you happy and inspired while you’re on the run.

The holidays are finally upon us and some of us have been naughty and others have been nice. Most of us have New Year’s Day marked on our calendar when we convince ourselves that we can erase the effects of our overeating by making a few resolutions.

Like most, I have overindulged. It’s inevitable, and no matter how willful we may be, our best intentions can be quickly disarmed by all the tempting once-a-year treats. The good news is that although I did allow myself some extras here and there, I came up with an emergency plan in case I sabotaged myself and dove into the dangerous end of the buffet table.

The first thing I did was wear figure-conscious clothes. I left my “eating clothes” at home; the ones that are already a size too big or have elastic instead of a strict zipper or buttons. (more…)

Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Act Passed

Five years after the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Management Act was first introduced in the U.S. Congress, the bill (more commonly called FAAMA) has finally passed. Part of an overall food safety bill,  it is expected that President Obama will sign it into law.

The bill was introduced in 2005 as part of the Food Allergy Awareness Network’s inaugural Kids’ Congress. It was approved on December 19 by the Senate and then by The House on December 21.

The bill creates a much needed set of regulations to help deal with food allergies in schools. The guidelines are not mandatory for schools; however, they will give schools without food allergy management policies a place to begin to create one. The new policies will give educate school officials about the severity of food allergies and implement plans for severe reactions, including anaphylaxis, should they occur while on school property. The guidelines are also helpful for those parents who are aware of their child’s food allergies and gives them a set of guidelines for reinforcement in the school setting.

Flat Belly Diet Boasts a 91 Percent Weight Loss Success Rate [Win a Copy of the Book!]

The Flat Belly Diet has made waves across the weight loss community. Boasting a 91 percent success rate, Prevention’s Flat Belly Diet claims to help users lose weight all-around, but it also seems to target fat loss specifically in the belly. In general, spot reduction is considered a myth, but The American Diabetic Association conducted a study that just may prove the opposite. According to the ADA and Prevention Magazine, eating large amounts of fat may actually help you achieve a flat belly- monounsaturated fats, of course!

The Flat Belly Diet works by prescribing meals high in monounsaturated fatty acids, or MUFAs. Foods that are naturally rich in MUFAs include fish, olive oil, avocado, dark chocolate, nuts, seeds, peanut butter and more. Another key component of the Flat Belly Diet is water consumption. Users are encouraged to drink Sassy Water which is enhanced with ginger.

Like most diet plans these days, this one offers an online weight loss system of peers and support for your journey. One downfall of the diet is that it blatantly de-emphasizes exercise. I have no doubt that there are people who lose weight without exercising but that’s really not the point. The benefits of working out are so numerous, and beside reaching a healthy weight, it’s important for your body to function at its highest potential which can only be achieved through an active lifestyle. The Flat Belly Diet looks like a fabulous system, but don’t neglect your overall fitness.
