Reindeer Meat: Holiday Controversy

Lidl grocery storeVenison has become a fashionable dish, but a British supermarket chain is coming under fire for offering up reindeer steaks. The Lidl stores have been accused of “destroying the magic of Christmas by selling dead reindeer” by the Vegetarians International Voice for Animals (VIVA!). The animal-rights group says that the reindeer are treated cruelly. They say that wild reindeer are herded with snow mobiles and helicopters, which causes the animals undue stress. They also say that 70 percent of the reindeer killed are calves. The reindeer are sourced from Siberia, where Polar Research Journal reported a decline in wild populations.

The Daily Mail reports that Lidl is the first of several grocery store chains that will offer reindeer meat during the holiday season. Lidl has defended their sales by pointing out that the wild animals are better off in their natural habitat than livestock that are raised in captivity. A Lidl representative further pointed out that the reindeer eat local aromatic herbs and grasses. The reindeer meat is served under the grocery store’s premium Deluxe label.

How to Have Your Turkey Dinner Without Killing Your Diet

A typical Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings can contain more than 2000 calories. TWO THOUSAND calories for one meal, in one sitting.  Happily, there are ways to have your dinner and avoid the need to run a marathon after. Here are some of the typical segments of a Thanksgiving dinner with the calorie and fat counts, and some more diet-friendly options.

  • Turkey is the mainstay of just about every Thanksgiving dinner, and, by itself, is a delicious lean protein. Trouble comes when you cover the meat with high-fat gravy. A 3.5 ounce serving of turkey breast with the skin removed will set you back around 170 calories with just 4 grams of fat. Add gravy, though, and you triple those numbers. (more…)

Wendy’s New “Natural” Fries Are No Different

In the latest twist towards more “real” food, Wendy’s is rolling out new french fries. The fast food giant is introducing fries that are thinner, smaller, and crispier than the current offerings. The revamped sides are made with Russet potatoes, with the skin left on, and topped with sea salt. The fries were transformed to appeal to a more diverse and upscale palate.

“We want every ingredient to be a simple ingredient, to be one you can pronounce and one your grandmother would recognize in her pantry,” said Ken Calwell, Wendy’s chief marketing officer.  “People want foods that are less processed,” he continued, “and by leaving the skins on, it reminds people where the fries come from.” Testing done by the company indicates that many consumers feel that fries are processed foods. In addition, there is a common misconception that sea salt is healthier. (more…)

Girl Effect and Nike Take On Poverty, Disease, Malnutrition, and Education

While DietsInReview’s primary focus is weight loss, disease prevention and overall health and wellness, we are also concerned about the health impact of poverty and malnutrition. Obesity may be a major problem in the United States and most of the developed world, but many developing nations struggle with nutritional deficiencies as a result of an insufficient food supply and poverty. Nutrition, health and health care, social justice, disease, and so many other concerns are wrapped up with poverty. It can be an overwhelming and cyclical problem.

The Girl Effect aims to improve poverty, disease, war, social inequality, and the world’s economy by educating girls in the developing world. It may sound idealistic, but there is much research behind the hypothesis that when girls are given any additional education, they are less likely to marry early, have children early, die from childbirth, contract HIV, and live in poverty. The Girl Effect also recognizes the different impact that women have on children and families versus men. According to The Girl Effect Fact Sheet women reinvest 90 percent of their income into their families, while men only reinvest 30 to 40 percent. That means that educating a young girl and giving her the opportunity to earn an income is at least 50 percent more likely to reduce poverty in her family than if a young boy was given additional educational opportunities. Women can make powerful changes when given the opportunity. (more…)

When it comes to health and fitness it is all about “you are what you eat.” But this common and wise expression should include “you are what you think.”

As the new year approaches and resolutions are made we become a bit more anxious to begin life-changing routines that will improve our lives. Often this promise is about weight loss and body sculpting. We stand in front of the mirror at a dressing room or in our bathroom and determine that we are hideous and grotesque and we must change right now. Or, we are trim but not fit or fit but not trim. Our general dissatisfaction with our appearance sends us into a panic that eventually ends with us attempting to motivate ourselves by bullying and belittling.

Aside from caloric intake and exercise, the single most important ingredient to a successful healthy lifestyle should be the dialog you have with yourself. (more…)

Just One Bite the Secret to Consequence-Free Indulgence

Melissa Craig is the author of Cupcake High, a quirky blog dedicated to high-altitude baking.  Check out Cupcake High for both ultra-indulgent and more health-conscious recipes, from cupcakes to quick breads–all altitude-tested and Melissa-approved.

People often ask me how I can stay somewhat thin while constantly baking for my blog, Cupcake High.  Being vegan certainly helps–after all, ruling out anything with dairy certainly trims the menu options.  Another motivating factor has been my recent move from Oklahoma, where everything is either deep-fried or smothered in gravy (or both) to Colorado, a much more health-conscious state.  Still, I think most of us are looking for that magic bullet–the elusive secret to health, wellness, and a supermodel physique.  Fortunately, I’m here to let you in on the secret.  Unfortunately, it’s no secret at all.  Put simply: diet and exercise.  Not what you were hoping for, I know, but it works.  Like a charm.  In every case, for everyone, every time.
