More People Obese than Overweight

If you think the sky is falling when it comes to the health of the American people, I have some disquieting news to make you even more anxious. New statistics from the U.S. Government show that the number of people who are overweight has been surpassed by the number of people who are obese.obesity

Obesity and overweight are calculated using the BMI (Body Mass Index) formula. Someone with a BMI of 25 to 29 is classified as overweight, while 30 to 40 counts as obese. Anything over a 40 is morbidly obese. (more…)

7 Tips for Weight Loss Goal Success

weight loss goalsHaving well-planned weight loss goals can really help your thoughts and wishes turn into action with a happy conclusion. Goal setting can make the difference between success and failure with weight loss. Goals are there to help keep you motivated, determined, and focused. They are there to help lay the foundation and give direction for your new healthy way of life. Here are eight tips to help create successful weight loss goals and get your started.
1. Personalize your goals. Set realistic, attainable goals that are within your capabilities. Make sure you take into account your limitations and potential obstacles you may encounter. Tailoring your expectations to your personal situation helps you set achievable goals!

2. Keep your goals realistic. Remember, healthy weight loss occurs slowly and steadily. You didn’t gain the weight over night so don’t expect to lose it that quickly either. For healthy weight loss, aim to lose one to two pounds a week; meaning you’ll need to burn 500 to 1,000 calories more than you consume each day. (more…)

Snack Attack Survival

smart portion trayDon’t think you are alone if you have found yourself at a vending machine at about 2:30 in the afternoon with a snack attack that brings out a weakness you never knew you had.   The next thing you know quarters are being inserted into the tiny slot and a bag of potato chips or chocolate bar comes tumbling down.

With the new Smart Portion Prep and Pack Tray you can now be prepared for these moments with six individual containers you can fill with your favorite treats from cut up carrot sticks to strawberries and even mixed nuts. You can prep your snacks ahead of time in healthy portion sizes and store in the fridge to take with you on the go or to even snack at home.

Thinking Out of the Clean Plate Club

After your brain registers that you are full, are any of these thoughts familiar as you continue to eat?

This is so good.

empty plateI love this restaurant; leftovers for lunch is such a treat.

There’s not really enough here to save. It would be a shame to waste any of this.

Next time I’ll divide it into three portions instead of two.

I just won’t eat as much for dinner. I’m sure I won’t get hungry as quickly if I finish this.

At least I’m not having soda with lunch this time.

Why am I doing this?

Now I feel too full. I’m tired and won’t get enough work done.

I think you can quickly identify what thought(s) led to the choice to join the clean plate club, despite feeling full. You can probably also quickly identify the thought(s) that lead to guilt. (more…)

All eyes are fixed on Washington D.C. this week, as we prepare to welcome in our 44th president, Barack Obama. What might be more fascinating than the poignant speech he’ll make to what is predicted to be the largest gathering of people in the western hemisphere ever, is what Michelle will be wearing, and what the new first couple will be eating.

This morning on the Today Show, Chef Shannon Shaffer of Design Cuisine shared the menu and recipes for the inaugural luncheon, taking place in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall with 230 guests. After leaving the formal inauguration ceremony, where temperatures are expected to be in the 20s, the newly sworn-in president, his family and members of congress will warm up around this beautiful and decadent feast.

Feel free to prepare your own home version of this inaugural meal, with the recipes from all three courses. We’ve also noted the wine pairings being served at the luncheon.

One Strange Celeb-Bashing Diet Promotion

zone delivery dietIf there’s any doubt as to why the traditional print tabloids are taking a slow nosedive into oblivion, let’s set things straight. We live in an era when tabloid thinking permeates every fiber of our society. Everyone has their hand in the till. The National Enquirer is only one outlet in a sea of gossip sources, most of which are free!

The tabloid culture has become so pervasive, that even non-media companies are getting involved in the mudslinging. Take the Zone Delivery Diet, who thought that it made sense to point out famous people’s weight issues in order to promote their food delivery service.

“Huh?”

That’s what I said too. It’s such a strange and crude non-sequitur marketing approach. It’s basically saying “Hey, look at the imperfect celebrities, try our diet products.” Does that make any linear sense? (more…)

Socialize for Your Health

Advocacy groups often use a technique called Social Liberation to encourage healthier living in their constituency. Social Liberation is dependent on the positive effects of social conformity, a powerful phenomenon that solidifies society and culture. Social Liberation creates opportunities and avenues for the constituency to come together, often with the goal clearly stated, such as minority health fairs.

Social Liberation brings the goal to the attention of new people by drawing them in using an established sense of community or identity; rather than a minority advocacy group offering a health fair, a health advocacy group could sponsor a minority cultural fair. It is also easier to try something new or seek out new information when you feel comfortable as an accepted part of the group. (more…)

Celebrities and their weight – it’s a topic that sells magazines and fills up hours of airtime on television talk shows. Even though the majority of Americans are overweight or obese, when it comes to celebrities, we’re pretty intolerant of anything less than a size six.
