Avoid GMOs with These Summer Snacks

The non-GMO movement is gaining steam as more companies are pushing for better labeling of products that contain GMO labeling. Some are even declaring themselves completely free of GMOs. Ben and Jerry’s became the second major food company, after Whole Foods, to commit to only non-GMO products. They plan to work on the transition through the rest of the year and complete it in 2024.

Ben and Jerry'sSeveral Ben and Jerry’s flavors are already GMO free, including Chocolate, Vanilla, Cherry Garcia, and Mint Chocolate Chunk. That flavor list will slowly expand over the course of the year as ingredients are switched to non-GMO and Fairtrade Certified. Now that you can buy ice cream without having to worry about GMOs, why not try some other non-GMO snacks this summer? We’ve put together a list of some brands that are committed to great, natural food. (more…)

Frozen Yogurt vs Ice Cream: Which is Healthier?

Unlike most summer dessert eaters, I crave frozen treats all year-round and simply can’t get enough of their sweet, creamy texture. But because I indulge so frequently – at least once a week – I try and keep my choices healthier by avoiding full-fat ice creams and keeping the toppings on my ‘froyo’ tower to a reasonable minimum.

Nutritionally speaking, frozen yogurt is perceivably healthier than ice cream because it typically contains live active cultures, and is often available in low- or no-fat and reduced-sugar varieties. Ice cream, on the other hand, is typically laden with fat and rarely comes in low-sugar flavors. Let’s keep track of the points, shall we?

Frozen yogurt: 1: Ice cream: 0.

In terms of quality, most ice cream and frozen yogurt shops have equally high standards when it comes to their ingredients. Ben & Jerry’s, for instance, is well known by now for its die-hard commitment to only the highest quality ingredients, and even tries to source local ingredients when possible. Now that’s a sweet deal: One point for each. (more…)

Ben & Jerry’s Greek FroYo Gets Their Scoop of the Greek Yogurt Market

By Arleigh Aldrich

Ben and Jerry’s has been a favorite of the frozen treat aisle for years now, and they’re an environmentally, socially and economically aware company to boot. Just when you didn’t think you could love them any more the ice cream company becomes more aware of our waist lines. Next week they roll out their new line of Greek Frozen Yogurts.

Now you can enjoy your favorite comfort food with a clear conscience in Banana Peanut Butter, Raspberry Fudge Chunk, Strawberry Shortcake, Blackberry Vanilla Graham Cracker, Vanilla and Strawberry Shortcake. This is no doubt a delicious frozen spin on the Greek yogurt phenomena.

Greek yogurt has started gaining popularity (not pounds!) in the USA as a low-fat, lower calorie alternative to traditional yogurt. With traditional yogurt, the fat content might be low while the sugar content is high, particularly in fruitier flavors. Greek yogurt can get you twice as much protein on top of all the benefits regular yogurt has, without all the sugar. (more…)

Ben & Jerry’s to Drop All Natural From Labels

The Washington-based Center for Science in the Public Interest has requested that the Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Company drop the words “all-natural” from their labels. Ben & Jerry’s agreed to the label change on Monday, declaring that they would no longer battle over the definition of “all natural“. Ben & Jerry’s spokesman Sean Greenwood said that the change would happen gradually and hopes that it will help consumers make a more informed decision.

Ben & Jerry’s is not changing the recipes that make their best selling ice cream, which sometimes contain corn syrup, hydrogenated oils or other substances that are not natural. The CPSI has stated that the company should not use the term “all natural” unless it is truly all natural, with only naturally occurring ingredients. Ben & Jerry’s has agreed, and will no longer label their ice cream as such. (more…)
