Where to Workout in Indianapolis During Super Bowl Week

Those visiting Indianapolis for the Super Bowl this week may be most concerned about celebrity sightings, fancy parties, the zip line in the Super Bowl Village, or the NFL experience, but that doesn’t mean that they will want to forsake their fitness habits entirely. With hotels packed to the gills and many renting out local homes for the week, the miniature hotel gym may not be the best option for everyone. Luckily, Indianapolis offers a variety of fitness options unique to the Circle City.

I am a big fan of running, even in the snow. Although it might require additional gear to run outdoors, we have had a sunny and unseasonably warm January which is predicted to continue past the big game. Indianapolis offers several trails that are great for runners, walkers or bikers; check out the Canal Walk, the growing Cultural Trail downtown, and the Monon Trail, which extends from the northeast side of downtown through Carmel and Westfield. Take your outdoor exercise a step further by jogging the steps at the Indiana War Memorial located just north of the Circle on Meridian Street.

If you want to take your workout indoors, here is a look at the best places to workout in Indianapolis. (more…)

Dance to Energize Your Body From the Inside Out

Ilyse Baker is a dance fitness guru and founder of Dancinerate. Ilyse works with men and women across the country to help them get fit and feel empowered through dance. For a list of current classes offered in Southern California and to register visit www.ilysebaker.com.

Ever since I was a little girl with my hair slicked back in a tight bun and my ballet box in hand, I knew that dance would change my life. I mean – stop for a second and think about it… dancing isn’t just about the fancy footwork, the musicality or the workout, but rather it is about the blend of social communication, physical activity, mental inspiration, and emotional reprieve. Dance has a life of its own and has the power to change us from the inside out.

The benefits of dance are endless! Dancing can be the most fun form of exercise, but what most people don’t know is that it also has huge health benefits. As a mind and body workout, dancing can make your body and soul feel good in a way that no other exercise can. It can help you lose weight, strengthen and tone your body, increase stamina and flexibility, improve balance and posture, and boost confidence. The most important benefit of dance, and my favorite, is how it empowers nearly everyone, increasing energy and leaving you with a general positive outlook on life.

Jazzercise vs. Zumba: Which Is Right for You?

Dance-based group exercise classes can be a blast. If you’re someone who loves to dance but hates to “go to the gym,” these classes can be fun, high-energy and, really, not feel like a workout at all. Now there are a number of dance-based classes and DVDs out there, but two of the most popular types of classes are Jazzercise and Zumba. Both types of workouts have similarities yet also they have their differences. Not sure which one is right for you? Read on to see which class is best!

Cost

This is a tricky question because both Zumba and Jazzercise classes are run by independent contractors, meaning that the price can vary widely depending on where you live and who you are taking the class from. Both kinds of classes are sometimes offered for free or for a small additional cost with a health-club membership. Other times, you can pay as little as $10 a class to take them at a facility without a membership. Many times you can also take classes at dance studios and although they charge a little bit more ($15+), the instruction is usually at a bit higher level. Both also offer workout DVDs.

Who wins this one? Because prices vary so widely according to location and facility, it’s a tie when it comes to classes! However, when it comes to buying workout DVDs, Jazzercise is considerably cheaper at just $16.99 for a DVD, compared with $89.95 for a set of Zumba DVDs (while the price per DVD is cheaper with the Zumba DVD set, generally the workouts on the Zumba DVDs are shorter, thereby giving you less workout time for your money).

How Beyonce Keeps Her Body Bootylicious

Beyonce is known for several reasons, including her high-energy songs, fantastic acting and performing, and most definitely for her bootylicious body. The singer has always had curves and legs that inspire me to get my booty into the gym. When I am not really feeling like doing a workout, I can just blast one of her songs on my iPod and motivation instantly strikes.

So how does this gorgeous woman stay in such great shape? It takes a lot of dedication for Beyonce to look the way she does. When she is getting ready to go on tour, she spends nine hours every day working on the choreography for her shows while wearing 5-inch stilettos. She goes to the gym five times a week with her personal trainer. Like I said, the girl is definitely motivated.

If you are like me, you are wondering how she stays so motivated. Beyonce has a painting of an Oscar award at her gym so she can literally run towards one of her many goals.

“I look at it, and I’m OK, I have to stay in shape,” Beyonce said.

What a Beginner Should Know About Zumba

Dana Walsh is a licensed Zumba instructor, who has been teaching Zumba for four years. She is also a certified group fitness instructor who shares her passion about living a healthy lifestyle through her blog FitCeleb.com.

Don’t be afraid to step into a Zumba class and step out of your comfort zone. Zumba is made to have fun while working up a sweat. Use these helpful tips to get you comfortable in a Zumba class.

Zumba is a fitness program that is made for everyone to have fun and burn some calories. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or just starting to get your feet wet in the workout scene, Zumba is a great combination of both fitness and basic dance moves based on latin rhythms ranging from salsa, merengue, cha cha, samba, to calypso, Bhangra, hip-hop and more!

Zumba is based on a specific formula that in simple terms uses about 3-4 moves a song. Again these moves will be a combination of both fitness and dance, but the moves are made to be repetitive and kept simple so that the participants can follow along at ease and not feel frustrated. However, I want to stress that every Zumba instructor has a different style of teaching. This means that some instructors may use more dance moves, or fitness moves, or tend to stick to a certain latin rhythm more than others. Therefore, I feel it’s important to sample the Zumba instructors in your area and find one that fits your preferred style.

The Bachelorette’s Ashley Hebert Stays in Shape with Dance

I have to admit it: I’m a huge fan of The Bachelorette. This season is especially turning out to be full of drama: one guy set out to break Ashley’s heart, another got too drunk to even attend the rose ceremony, and one guy insisted on wearing a creepy mask. When you add all of this to the over-the-top dates and awkward tension between the men who are competing for Ashley’s heart, you know it is going to be a good season.

In addition to the fun drama described above, Bachelorette fans will get another treat from this season’s show: they get to see all of Ashley’s cute clothes. Ashley has already promised to wear tons of short dresses and miniskirts this season, and therefore, will be showing off her amazing legs.

So how did she get those fantastic quads, calves, and everything else?

“I teach jazz, ballet, and hip-hop at my college,” Ashley revealed. “I feel confident when I’m dancing.”

Zumbatomic Teaches Kids All the Right Moves

Have you ever walked by a gym studio and seen a group of energetic people exuberantly dancing to exciting Latin music? What you saw was quite probably a Zumba class.

Zumba Fitness is a Latin-inspired dance-fitness program. It’s an addictive mix of red-hot international music  and contagious steps that in many ways mimics nightclub dancing.  In fact, Zumba was created by accident, when the founder, Alberto Perez, forgot his music for aerobics class and improvised with the Latin music he had on hand in his backpack.

Since its inception in 2001, the number of studios offering Zumba have grown rapidly to over 110,000 locations across more than 125 countries. Zumba is everywhere. In fact, I’ve taken Zumba on cruise ships, in martial arts studios and at resorts across the country and in Mexico!

Miss America Teresa Scanlan Promotes a Healthy Lifestyle and Body Image for Young Women

Teresa Scanlan is the newest Miss America. She is also the youngest woman, at 17 years of age, to win this title since 1938 when an age limit was implemented for the pageant. Joy Behar, one of the judges of the pageant, commented on Scanlan’s “cute” bikini body that was a completely “cellulite-free zone.”

So, what are the diet secrets this beautiful young woman uses to stay in such great shape? Surprisingly, she does not use any “beauty tricks,” but instead relies on moderation, an active lifestyle, and her age to stay in shape.

A younger person will have a more active metabolism than an older person because a person’s metabolism slows down with age. This decline usually starts between ages 25 and 30 for women. Constantly putting your body through fad diets and extreme dieting can also slow your natural metabolism.

New Workout Trends Make Fitness Fun

When you think fitness, what comes to mind – fun or drudgery and effort? Do you imagine dragging yourself to the gym, dreading every work out? Do you make up ways to avoid getting it done? Are you tired of using the same equipment over and over?

Fitness doesn’t have to be an effort. You don’t have to dread the cardio equipment and fear the weights. Boredom is one of the top reasons that those who begin a fitness effort stop. If you’ve just begun your fitness journey, take heart. It doesn’t have to be this way. There are plenty of fun activities that do double duty, getting your heart rate up while being enjoyable. A workout that teaches a new skill can build self confidence, and the reality that you are improving in your new area of study makes you more apt to stick with it.

“Exercise doesn’t have to be boring,” says Shawn M. Arent, director of the Human Performance Lab at Rutgers University in New Jersey. “It can be fun and addictive in a good way.”
