older couple walkingHalf-way to 100 and in the best shape of your life! Exercising and eating right are the two main ingredients for a healthy body. Do you exercise on a normal basis? Do you watch what you eat and try to get a variation of nutrition daily? I have a lot of friends and clients that say, “Hey, I workout on a daily basis, I can eat whatever I want!!” True, some people can get away with this, but why not exercise and eat healthy anyway?

Avoid sugary, salty, fatty, carb-loaded foods and try to focus on foods that are rich in nutrients and that actually benefit your body. Check out the Food Guide Pyramid if you have any questions about what to eat or portion sizes. I recommend exercising five to six days a week, but I realize that everyone doesn’t have the luxury of getting to the gym that often. Do your best and make the most out of each workout that you do. You should leave every exercise session dripping with sweat and at least somewhat exhausted. (more…)

Cankles, a Sign of Good Health

Ever look down to find that your calf and ankle seem to have morphed into one continuous body part? Popular culture has termed this attractive feature the “cankle.” Everyone from pregnant women to those carrying some extra weight have been plagued by the cankle, but none have yet to embrace it.

Studies on fat distribution in the body show that an ankle that has lost definition, having joined itself with calf, could be a signal of better health, for those who aren’t obese. Those carrying extra weight in their lower body are less likely to have weight-related health problems, like those who carry weight in their abdomen, which puts additional strain on the organs.

Wendy Kohrt, PhD, a professor of medicine at the University of Colorado – Denver, says “leg fat may protect postmenopausal women by drawing triglycerides out of the bloodstream, where they constitute a risk factor, and into fat deposits in the legs.”

Socialize for Your Health

Advocacy groups often use a technique called Social Liberation to encourage healthier living in their constituency. Social Liberation is dependent on the positive effects of social conformity, a powerful phenomenon that solidifies society and culture. Social Liberation creates opportunities and avenues for the constituency to come together, often with the goal clearly stated, such as minority health fairs.

Social Liberation brings the goal to the attention of new people by drawing them in using an established sense of community or identity; rather than a minority advocacy group offering a health fair, a health advocacy group could sponsor a minority cultural fair. It is also easier to try something new or seek out new information when you feel comfortable as an accepted part of the group. (more…)

One of her favorites is a peppermint flavored ice cream. And while this would never be a recommendation for anyone trying to lose weight, peppermint on its own has been shown to have health benefits.
