Whether you know Gwyneth Paltrow from Shakespeare in Love fame or as the budding songstress wife to Coldplay’s Chris Martin, this mother of two has plenty of other skills up her sleeve. The latest? Cooking.

In April, Paltrow will release My Father’s Daughter: Delicious, Easy Recipes Celebrating Family and Togetherness, her first cookbook that will include a variety of  healthy, quick, weeknight dinner recipes for families.

“In the last ten years or so, cooking has become my main ancillary passion in life,” Paltrow writes in the book. “The stove is the epicenter of my house — I am never far away from it and most of the time there is something atop it, simmering away for my family.”

Paltrow has made headlines in the past about her diet and exercise habits, from maintaining a macrobiotic diet to making controversial comments about exercise.  Now, she is focusing on healthful foods and reducing the amount of sugar in her family’s diet.

Though she follows a less intense version of the diet now, she still does not consume much dairy. She has used even more severe diet plans, including fasts, detoxes and the famous Master Cleanse. She exercises 90 minutes a day, six days a week with trainer Tracy Anderson.

Guy Fieri’s Macrobiotic Childhood Created a Food Rebel

Guy Fieri was like most kids growing up – loved his parents and hated their cooking. “My parents were into macrobiotic cooking – vegetarian, nondairy, whole grains, no red meat,” the Food Network star told People in a recent interview.guy fieri

While most kids rebel by skipping curfew or drinking, Fieri acted out by cooking. “I started cooking when I was 10 because I just couldn’t eat that stuff,” he says. His rebellion even includes a tattoo that reads “Kulinary Gangsta.”

He has an infectious passion for food, that he shares on many Food Network shows, as well as with his family of four. Fieri is married to wife Lori, and they have two sons, Hunter and Ryder. He gets the entire family involved when he’s in the kitchen (which due to shooting schedules is only about one-third the year). His kids help prepare recipes like deep-fried s’mores, four-bean salad, barbecue, pizza, sushi or Hunter’s spaghetti and meatballs. (more…)

Tune In: Gwyneth Paltrow on Oprah

gwyneth paltrow and oprahLooks like Oprah‘s hit a week of re-runs. Which is OK if you missed the 2024 episode with Gwyneth Paltrow. Gwyneth Paltrow Reveals Her Health Secrets to Oprah

On a recent episode of Oprah, actress, mother and now traveling gourmet, Gwyneth Paltrow chatted with Lady O about her postpartum depression, her newly transformed body, her family and her latest project with celebrity chef Mario Batali.

As one of Hollywood’s most beautiful and talented actresses, Paltrow seems like she has it all. And she does in many regards: A beautiful face, a gorgeous body, a lovely demeanor, an amazing career and a wonderful family. But after the birth of her second child Moses, two years ago, Paltrow had a stroke of postpartum depression that lasted for about 6 months. It wasn’t until she started to get out of it did she realize what kind of a hazy fog she had actually been in.

Now, she is sharing her beauty, body and health tips and secrets for women everywhere. Her recipe that helped lift her out of her depression included a combination of steady exercise, healthy eating and her hormones finally regulating back to their pre-pregnancy levels.

Healthy Eating

As a long devotee of Ashtanga yoga and a vegetarian, Paltrow takes her health, both physical and spiritual very seriously. But as many mothers can attest, with the complex and intricate combination of hormones, extra baby weight and sleeplessness nights, your once disciplined health routine gets lost in the juggle of family and work.

After years of following a strict macrobiotic diet, Paltrow has since loosened up on her eating rules. Although she still doesn’t eat anything with four legs, she admits to eat anything and everything from poached salmon to creamy French cheeses. But she firmly admits that in order to have the freedom to enjoy dessert after dinner, she must work for it.

She doesn’t count calories or carboyhdrate grams. Instead she exercises. Everyday. And for her, these well-crafted exercise routines are what works for her body so that she can travel around Spain with one of the world’s most celebrated chefs and feast on scrumptious paella.

Rigorous Exercise

Admitting to an Achilles Heel for fried dough, Paltrow, said that she couldn’t seem to drop those last 20 pounds of pregnancy weight after the birth of her son, Moses. Until she paired up with trainer Tracy Anderson, a five-foot powerhouse who whisked her own body back into shape after giving birth. Paltrow then introduced Anderson to her pal, Madonna and now both Paltrow and Madonna credit Anderson for whipping their bodies into red-carpet shape (not that Madonna needed that much help in that department).

According to Gywneth, Anderson’s routines kick your butt! She relies on cardio dance training and resistance training to give the body a lean and defined look. Anderson wants her female clients to have the body of a dancer…strong and long.

On any typical day,  Gwyneth works out with Tracy at her home gym, but when she’s traveling, she says she won’t leave home without Tracy’s exercise DVDs. They are one of Paltrow’s staple travel companions.

Tracy’s routines for both Madonna and Gwyneth include working out in a room that is heated to 80 degrees. The heat creates sweat which ups the body’s metabolism in an effort to cool itself down. This extra exertion from the body equates to more calories burned. In this heated room,  Paltrow spends two hours doing hundreds of squats, lifts and other exercises that give her heart rate and muscles a real burn. Tracy’s own signature band system of exercises targets specific muscles at a variety of angles. And she only has her gals doing resistance training with a 3 pound weights or less. Tracy does not believe that any woman should use more weight than this since she feels it puts the muscle at risk for bulking up.

25 Most Outrageous but popular Diets

Maybe we knew it all along that our diet was destined to failure because of its sheer ridiculousness: The Subway Diet, the Cookie Diet, the Cabbage Soup Diet. But in a recently published article, 25 of the most popular diets are analyzed for their nutritional content, staying-power and promised results to show just how far we diet-obsessed Americans will go to lose a few pounds. For many of us, I’m sure we can check a few or even more of these 25 diets as “Yep, I’ve tried that one. And that one too.” For some, maybe they worked, even if just temporarily.

Some clearly require the will-power of a military general (the Master Cleanser) and some promise a cancer-free life (the Macrobiotic Diet). But all of them have one thing in common: They all strive to be the one end-all-be-all way for you to lose weight. Maybe I could eat three Subway sandwiches every day for the next 6 weeks to lose weight, but once that 6 weeks is up, what do I eat? More sandwiches?

Interestingly enough, the one diet that research shows to have long-lasting success stories is Weight Watchers, because it lays out a way of eating for life and it forces you to look at some of the underlying issues in your own personal life that may be thwarting your health goals.

Check out the 25 Diets article and tell us what you think. If you have tried one of these diets, let us know what your experience was with it.
