How to Become a Spinning Instructor

If you’re already dedicated to fitness but want to take your skill to the next level, perhaps it’s time to add “become an instructor” to your list of New Year’s resolutions. While there are numerous courses and classes that you can become certified to teach, spinning is a popular choice. While most health clubs offer cycling classes, only some of them are certified spinning classes.

Find an orientation: If you want to become a spinning instructor, the most direct way to become certified is to visit spinning.com and find an orientation course close to your home or workplace. In the 9-hour class, you’ll learn how to properly teach bike setup and safety, develop workout profiles, hone your coaching skills and use techniques to enhance the mind/body connection during a workout.

Study your materials: When you register for orientation, you’ll receive a Spinning Instructor Manual that you can use throughout your training and beyond.

Assess: Once you complete your training and orientation course, you will be eligible to complete an assessment online. Once you pass the assessment, you will be certified.

Continue your education: Your certification will remain valid for two years from the date of your orientation. It is important to keep up with changes in the industry including new workout plans, music, equipment and overall spinning trends. While your certification remains valid for two years, you may be required to complete certain continuing education requirements in order to renew.

Learn about additional certifications: While some health clubs require only a spinning certification, many gyms will want their instructors to become certified with the Americans Sports & Fitness Association and/or the Aerobics & Fitness Association of America. Additionally, you’ll be a more attractive job applicant to health clubs if you are able to teach other aerobics classes, such as Step, Pilates and Zumba, in addition to spinning.
