John Goodman made his mark as the “everyman” in the ’90s hit sitcom Roseanne. But, for those of us who have been fans of his, including his underrated work in film, it’s been a minor miracle that he hasn’t fallen in the footsteps of other overweight entertainers to an early grave.
Now, at 57, Goodman has finally made a move to get his weight down. When he strolled down the red carpet for a Los Angeles awards ceremony, he surprised the public with a much thinner frame.
Most of the details over his weight loss are just speculation, as there hasn’t been any official explanation. His publicist is quoted as saying he did it with “diet and exercise,” which isn’t much of a revelation.
Only rumors have put Goodman at around 400 pounds before he began to lose weight. And it’s the same speculation that has put his weight loss at about 100 pounds in a few short months.
UPDATE 8/5/10:
There has been confirmation of how much weight John Goodman has lost to date. According to People magazine, the veteran actor has lost more than 100 pounds. He lost his weight by quitting alcohol, which he gave up three years ago. He also cut down on sugar, and exercises six days a week. His routine includes fitness coach Mackie Shilstone, known for working with athletes such as tennis star Serena Williams.
“I know it sounds sappy, but it was a waste,” Goodman told People. “It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you’re going to eat next… I wanted to live life better.”
