We live in a face-paced world and expect immediate results. Unfortunately when it comes to choosing a healthy lifestyle, there are no short cuts. If you want lasting and healthy results you need to do the work in order to obtain success.
I have a friend who has been fighting to lose 20 pounds for years. She has tried everything. Every fad diet available, she owns most books, has participated in all the online and local weight loss systems and still no results. Frustrated, she turned to me and asked how I was able to drop the 20 pounds I had mindlessly put on some years back. Her question forced me to dig deep and present her with not just where I went, but how I did it.
For me, the success came in obedience and trust. I relinquished control and dared to get out of my own way in order to have this plan work. The first thing I learned was that I would not lose this weight in a week. At my first meeting I was told to expect to lose one or two pounds a week. They also expected me to take responsibility by consuming the calories necessary for me to lose weight in a healthy way. I also had to track every single item I ate and introduce moderate exercise.
Slowly the weight came off, but it came off and stayed off. Not long after that I decided to begin walking. And about a year later, I was a runner. Years into my running I am still not winning any races, but I’ve won something bigger: the ability to provide myself with all the food and exercise necessary to live a healthy life.
My friend has not failed, she has just begun to realize that if she had taken the time to commit to one simple plan of sensible eating and exercising she would have already lost those 20 pounds years ago. I am hopeful that she has embraced the reality that something worth having takes time, especially when adopting a healthy lifestyle.
