Purium Ingredients and Side Effects

Here is some select ingredients found in Purium brands:

Rice Bran Solubles Spirulina Wheat Grass Juice Lou Han Guo Organic Rooibos Extract
Black Walnut Hull Marshmallow Root Clove Wormwood Amalaki
Cascara Sagrada Bark Senna Leaf Organic Activated Barley Organic Alfalfa Leaf Juice Powder Organic Apple Flavor

Spirulina: Algae used due to its high nutrient content. It’s highly advised to ensure that this ingredient comes from a clean source, as there have been issues with contaminations from unclean waters.

Potential contaminations can promote toxic buildup in the form of heavy metals such as lead. This may cause:

  • Immune system damage, fatigue, and weakness.
  • Diarrhea, muscle cramps, and vomiting.
  • Headaches, organ damage, and death.

Our review experts have crafted a list of the top ranked weight loss diets.

Black Walnut Hull: This extract contains tannins which can be used to reduce swelling and pain. Web MD adds:

“POSSIBLY UNSAFE when applied directly to the skin”

Therefore handling of this must be exercised with caution.  Little information exists about how to properly handle it.

Wormwood: Herb that can stimulate the central nervous system. If it contains an extract called thujone it may be unsafe. Possible side effects can include:

  • Vomiting, dizziness, and thirst.
  • Paralysis, numbness, and seizure.
  • Muscle breakdown, insomnia, and nightmares.
  • Kidney damage, tremors, and death.

It’s unknown if the makers of Purium ensure their wormwood is free of the potentially harmful thujone.

Amalaki: More commonly known as Indian gooseberry. It is used to reduce cholesterol and triglycerides.  Some studies have shown a potential for liver damage.

Cascara Sagrada Bark: This shrub is used to promote laxative effects. With repeat use longer than one week it may lead to side effects in the form of:

  • Low levels of electrolytes, dehydration, and muscle fatigue.
  • Heart issues, thirst, and nausea.
  • Bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
  • Indigestion, increased bathroom use, and cramps.

This ingredient was also banned by the FDA as use of an over the counter or prescription laxative in 2002.

Senna Leaf: Herb that irritates the bowels to promote laxative like effects. Web MD adds:

“POSSIBLY UNSAFE when taken in by mouth long-term or in high doses. Don’t use senna for more than two weeks”

Possible side effects can include:

  • Muscle fatigue, unhealthy balance of electrolytes, and liver damage.
  • Heart malfunction, dehydration, and many other harmful effects.

It is also common for people to experience stomach cramps while taking senna.

Purium Quality of Ingredients

Many of these ingredients have concerns due to potential side effects. A major issue with these products is that they’re not all necessary. The amino acids for example can be substituted with a protein rich meal, and electrolytes are also found commonly are not essential to most.

Their meal replacement shake has only 5 grams of protein per serving, which makes it incredibly low and likely not rich enough in amino acids that the body needs.

They also include many laxatives like ingredients which can lead to digestive issues and are not intended for repeat use. These kinds of ingredients are only added as it’s likely one will experience constipation while on the 10 day fast.

The comprehensive 10 day kit also requires one to eat nothing but shakes, pills, and liquid formulas. This may not be appetizing and only provides a limited amount of calories.

The Price and Quality of Purium

The comprehensive 10-day transformation kit sells for $205. It includes a shaker bottle, gym bag, shake, amino acid pills, liquid antioxidant blend, herbal detox blends, and an electrolyte blend.

One thing not explained in the marketing of this plan is that you’re meant to only eat and drink what they offer. This is a very low calorie diet and can be extremely difficult to follow. They provide a chart which mentions what one will feel which includes:

  • Fear, anger, resentment, and they claim it offers acceptance and happier feelings.

They also advise to exercise caution and to only use it if one is healthy enough to do this kind of fast. While one product should be taken every 2 hours, it can be extremely difficult to follow and may promote serious side effects. This is especially true in people who have no experience in fasting.

Due to the low protein and calories it may produce many difficult side effects. Relying on this program for fasting may be potentially harmful and unreliable for long lasting weight loss. Click the link here to view the list of the highest rated weight loss diets.

Greatly reducing calories has also not been proven as a safe and effective weight loss approach. Web MD adds:

“can also cause all kinds of health problems, including muscle loss”

“initial weight lost on fast is primarily fluid or “water weight”, not fat”

So it’s likely that any results on the scale won’t be solely fat but also important muscle and tissue.

Business of Purium

The name of the company is Purium Health Products and their contact information is:

Phone Number: (888) 747-6733

Address: 1392 Sarah Place Unit B

Ontario, California 91761

Email: [email protected]

Very little information exists about the company. They do currently have a low D + rating on their Better Business Bureau account. One customer had this to say about the company practices:

“keeping my product and not refunding me… That is theft and 100% illegal”

They mention in their FAQ section that before starting their weight loss transformation program that one should consult a physician before starting their 10 day transformation. For a list of the top ranked weight loss diets, click on the link featured.

Customer Opinions of Purium

Featured are select reviews from users:

“most of the positive reviews are from distributors… I ended up in the hospital and my blood sugar, electrolytes, and few other things were dangerously low”

“You can’t live off those expensive junk forever. It made me feel gross”

“Tried it twice and both times I felt nauseous. It tastes awful”

“Yeah you’ll lose weight but only because you’re starving yourself. Their cleanse shake is revolting and tastes disgusting”

There were many problems according to customers. People often mentioned that they experienced side effects and that they couldn’t drink the shake. It caused some to gag and for many it was impossible to drink no matter what they mixed it with.

Side effects people experienced included headaches, nausea, indigestion, stomach cramps, low blood sugar, increased bathroom usage, diarrhea, extreme thirst, insomnia, reduced electrolytes, fatigue and an inability to function normally.

A few were hospitalized due to the extreme side effects experienced. People actually collapsed and had to be transported to the hospital while doing the 10 day transformation. To learn about which weight loss diets were rated as the best overall, follow the link here.

Conclusion – Does Purium Work?

Purium products are described as wholesome but many of these have no purpose other than to support people on fasts. This includes electrolytes and amino acid blends which are used to substitute the natural minerals and vitamins found in foods. Many customers have complained of not just a lack of weight loss, but also of extreme side effects. A few were hospitalized due to serious complications caused by the necessary fasting. There’s no evidence provided to ensure that relying on these products for weight loss is safe and effective.

In analyzing many kinds of weight loss diets our review experts found that the 18Shake Diet produced the best results. It offers a meal replacement for hours of appetite suppression and a fat burning diet pill. Both are made with high quality ingredients and no stimulants, fillers, binders, preservatives, colors, or any unwanted additives. Customers have also left reviews and testimonials to showcase its potent effects. The benefits of this diet is that it can improve metabolism, burn fat, keep blood sugar stable, and promote overall wellbeing.

The company produces their ingredients in a GMP certified facility to ensure 3rd party inspections and routine quality. Discover more about the 18Shake Diet by clicking the link here.

Michelle gammill says:

This is the worst product ever. Before using please read the ingredients in the pills and what they are actually used for. From the very start it was horrible.

Criss says:

Obviously you do not understand what a “cleanse” is. The ingredients in this product are all made for this and work very well at doing so.

Elia says:

Did you read this?! Two of the ingredients listed are very dangerous, and at least should not be used for more than a few days, if at all.

violeta says:

The worst program I’ve ever tried! Please, don’t buy the lies they are trying to sell you. I’m on the 5th day of the 10 day transformation program. So far, apart from being deprived of food and taking supplements in place of a meal like if I were an astronaut, I don’t see any benefits at all. What Purium’s advertising claims -“my pants are falling down, I feel great and energetic!” seems a total lie to me. For me, this program has been only pain, bloating and deprivation; I look and feel worse than before; moreover, I didn’t lose any weight at all.

I feel horribly bloated and experienced such strong stomach pain that I could barely breathe. Moreover, the pain wakes me up at night. I have to breath shortly so that I don’t feel the pins and needles.

The program s a rip off; I know there are people out there suffering form orthorexia, that are obsessed with healthy eating and will do anything to satisfy such addiction. But please, use those $350 bucks wisely; don’t be gullible and don’t allow yourself to be ripped off!

ann obrien says:

Did you finish out the 10 days? How did you feel at the end. I’m just starting and wondering how it will end at the 10 day mark

Merna Gill says:

I suffer from IBS and found great relief after the first 5 days. The first couple days are hard because of no coffee being permitted but after years of stomach pain especially after menopause, I was ready. The pills and drink every 2 hours is intense but my stomach has never felt better.
Transformational.

Dian says:

It made me grow huge Wylie E. Coyote feet

Frank says:

Me too! And now my eyebrows are growing at a suspiciously unusual rate! Also, I get the urge to crouch in the bushes and wait for rabbits to appear.

Frank says:

PS You rock, Dian.

Anonymous says:

My son has been severely sick he was on purium for 3 days wounder in god this may be the factor was in icu for two days

Ryan says:

It’s called DETOX SYMPTOMS.

Alana says:

Those are not detox symptoms. There is no such thing as “detox symptoms”. Trust me, I am very familiar with the fasting lifestyle and peoples’ perceived “detox symptoms” and as a biology teacher I will tell you right now that is made up. Those are symptoms of the body responding negatively to a massive change in/deprivation of nutrients. Unless you have severe liver or kidney disease, your liver and kidneys will detox your body just fine for you.

Tracy says:

I am actually doing the 10 day cleanse. However, I think folks need to use common sense. For one, females need to eat a minimum of 1,200 calories. I’m 5’2″ and burn about 1,350 calories. Therefore with the shakes and recommended foods I am eating about 1,350 calories per day. I also go to the gym 5-6 times per week. I have seen a drop in my weight, however, it will not be as drastic as following the diet exactly. However, I do feel a lot better and not as sluggish as how I used to feel.

Braiden says:

I’ve do this diet but still eat with it. It does work for me. I do not lose weight as fast as doing it like they say but still losing weight. I feel great but only when I do it my way. So I do not even by the ult anymore more I only pay the amnios and the shakes. I do like the juice bar as well.

anonymous says:

Purium is a very dangerous product to use. DO NOT put anything with the Purium label in your mouth. They claim to be certified organic, but they’re not. The only organic component in the whole process will be your own excrement. The side effects are terrible; diarrhea, vomit, nausea and on and on. They often pay people to write positive reviews to counter act the bad ones from real consumers. Do your homework. There are way better products out there, from people who actually know what they’re doing and it doesn’t cost $200.

Criss says:

Can you tell me where you got your information that Purium products are in fact not organic?

Sue says:

Need info on the fact that you say it’s not organic?

Will says:

The state of CA sued them because of the high levels of lead in over 30 of their products. A substantial amount of the products and materials in their products come from China, which has a very dubious “organic” certification process. Some of their products were certified by independent contractors who are allowed tho certify by the usda under certain circumstances, but good luck finding independent analysis, and Purium doesn’t have much in the way specific origin information on their product.

susana says:

I am so sorry you feel this way, i work with a very big crowed of people and only 2% don’t like this because they are not ready to give up sugar, or fast foods, my son was very sick in June an pancreas cancer, a 4 lbs tumor was removed and he is on purium very faithly
doing very well now,

Bonnie says:

I too had horrible results. Not near enough protein and the aminos DO NOT work like meat I lost all muscle tone and ended up with my protein levels pluminting! Almost landed in the hospital thankfully I pulled out of it with intense nutrition. 4 whey protein shakes a day for the last couple months and cleaning out all the rice bran solubles wasn’t fun! Tried it in all its forms thinking it was me not doing it right… for a year! Silly me .. paid the price I still have yet to get my muscles back and I actually gained weight as I was starving literally and would binge to feel less like passing out!

A says:

I’m on my third day of this program, my dad and I are doing it together, he had heard good things from friends (it apparently works for some people) and was very enthusiastic. He has now come down with a cold and has been coughing for hours. He sometimes has coughing fits but I’m worried that purium is doing bad things to his health. Yesterday he called me to say that he felt a rush of adrenaline and his heart started pumping very fast…doesn’t sound healthy. I am doing fine, but the shakes are NASTY. I’m also still eating food, but much less, and I’m definitely bloated.
Researching because I’m scared.

van says:

Yikes I would Not consume this product

Azura says:

That’s called detox… detoxification symptoms and healing crisis are normal on any cleanse that is doing its job. Some people are so toxic that they experience the effects more intensely. You have to consider that each person is different, and if you have been on a standard American diet (SAD diet)… then going straight to a 10 day transformation is going to be rough on your system. It is better to ease into it, adding the products little by little and removing toxic substances that your body and parasites are addicted to, like meat, processed foods, dairy, sugar, alcohol, coffee, etc. If you have never cleansed before… it is VERY important to ease into such a cleanse/fast. KNOW THYSELF, educate thyself…. and know that health, healing, detox and weight loss are a long-term process. Purium is a great kickstart, but it takes lasting commitment, permanent changes and trust. It takes listening to your body. A 40 day program is best, with the 10 day transformation being on either end of that 40 days, depending on your body, state of health and experience. IF you are experiencing extreme symptoms… you are in a state of health that needs care and attention. Purium products are PURE, organic and intelligently formulated, but NOT an absolute truth. The products work best with long term use, but the 10 day is a great way to get going… as you are ready for it!

Alana says:

Again, those are not detox symptoms. If you experience those things, that is your body telling you to STOP what you are doing and try something else. There are potentially dangerous ingredients in Purium, and regardless, peoples’ bodies are not one size fits all and what works for one person will not work for everyone. I am a college biology TA and please believe me when I tell you I’ve spent a LOT of time studying this stuff (in real college classrooms with geneticists, microbiologists, etc., not in Purium zooms or IIN) and unless you are extremely ill, your liver and kidneys will detox your body for you. If you are so ill that they don’t, then PLEASE SEE A DOCTOR, not a Purium distributor. If you need to lose weight and are experiencing wild symptoms like this on Purium, pleeeassee try a different diet.

Tess says:

When someone detoxes, you might feel awful or get sick at first because the body is getting ride of the poisons in your body. The more toxins your body tries to eliminates, the sicker you might end up at first.

Lori Testa says:

The mere notion that this type of “diet” detoxifies is ridiculous. The liver is the organ responsible to detoxify substances that enter our bodies. I would ask you,Tess, what level of anatomy and physiology understanding do you have? Do you have a background in medicine? It would be best to consult with a board certified nutritionist if one wishes to truly eat healthy and lose weight without compromising their overall health.

chmedly says:

I haven’t been able to find published, peer reviewed medical proof that “detox” works this way. In fact, many “detox” ingredients are actually poisonous to the human body to begin with. Feeling sick after eating a food or taking a vitamin is almost always a signal to avoid eating or taking that thing.
Furthermore, humans have been trying to figure out what to eat for about as long as humans have been around. There have always been things that are pure, organic and plucked fresh from a plant that can harm or even kill us.

Tess says:

On my second 10-day Transformation Purium detox program, and I feel fantastic. I don’t have any pain in any part of my body, my digestive system feels like that of my twenty year old self. I can’t comprehend all the negative comments on this site. Again, I think those who got sick on the program were people with extreme toxicity and probably needed to stay on it for the whole ten days. Also, if you’re drinking less than a liter of water per day, the toxins oozing out of your body will make you sick.

will says:

What “toxins” did you get rid of?

Tess says:

I would rather spend my hard earned cash on a company that seeks to bring me good health than all the ones that get us addicted to sugar and fillers. We stuff ourselves with the potato chips, the canned foods, the GMO products, and all the junk that food industry is permitted to put in our foods and get us addicted to their health destroying substances. Then we think when we try to expel all that we superfoods that we will not feel sick. Purium does not make people sick; it expels the sickness in you so that sooner or later you have a chance to live disease free and enjoy your life. I am a teacher and health coach and I advise anyone who values his health to stick with the program no matter how sick you feel for the first five days. You do get better as you expel toxins out of your tissue. Just drink lots of water. Remember: Health is Wealth.

Stop looking for a quick fix and start eating healthy. This product, by the simply marketing, technique is providing an opportunity to eat better. Instead of justifying an unhealthy lifestyle find something that works for you and take charge of your life.

Lilian says:

I’ve been taking Purium products for a few years now. Although I didn’t have a lot of luck losing weight with the cleanse (already on a vegan diet and only needed to lose about 10 lbs) I had a great bit of energy and it rebooted my eating habits each time.
Their instructions specifically say what flex foods – raw fruits and veggies – to eat in moderation while on the cleanse. It NEVER says that those are the only products you are supposed to consume for those 10 days, if you are starving, you should have a healthy snack.
It just takes some Common Sense and to listen to your body…
The comment about the ingredients not being organic? WTF?
I’ve actually visited their facility (in Long Beach) for a meeting with a friend (No I’m not a seller or promoter, I’m a horrible salesperson…) the people there seemed to sincerely care to help people improve their health. The owner David Sandoval is a kind person as well, met him briefly on another occasion.
Not all products work for everyone …but there are a LOT worse out there…
Just wanted to throw some positive in here with all the bashing on their products 🙂

I too had a bad experience and I’m not a competitor. I started the core 4 by the fourth day i had severe diarrhea. I was having abdominal pain, cramping and burning. I could not hold anything down. Luckily I was off from work because I would have had to call out. I spoke to the representative and she said she never heard of this and would get me in touch with one of the companies main people. So we had a call the next day she told me that I may have had a reaction to the aminos and the biomedical bc the biomedic has laxative side effects and I currently take Prilosec for hers and they thought that may be the cause. They also told me that the amino acids could react with will butyrin that I was taken to help quit smoking and that I could have sudden suicidal thoughts they told me to stop the biomed it completely for now and to crush the amino acid‘s and as long as I was feeling fine I can stay on it however four days later I was still having stomach pain and cramps after stopping everything completely.

I have never been dissatisfied with purium worth every penny . Never felt as good as I did on purium even spending a fortune on fresh organic whole foods

Nutrition Girl says:

Its not a quick fix. It’s amazing. So clean my kids drink it and I breastfed with it. It’s real food nutrition. Also it’s the starter to a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes people don’t know what to eat. The a lot of people wont take drastic change that could change their lives because of reviews like this. If you haven’t tried it dont knock it. There are 10 day cleanses and 40 day lifestyle transitions. Plus if you’ve heard of intermitened fasting, which is skipping a meal and all the benefits from that that you can do. A detox isnt that harmful. If your kids are obese they are more likely to get cancer in their 30’s and 40’s. Sometimes a diet or detox is a good thing, until habits can change. I did a raw food vegan diet with out buying any products. It worked. I ate every 2 hours and was at home all day cooking and meal prepping. Most people don’t have time to do that. This is a great way to open someones habits so they can then make healthy lifestyle choices. It’s more convenient for on the go or a heavy work day environment. I think people like to scream scam because they aren’t open and have a scarcity and fear based mindset. And if you only believe products that are FDA approved then you only want the government to regualate your choices. The FDA cant regulate real food. Purium is RAW Dehydrated food. So the nutrtional value stays in. Just like raw fruits and vegetables. Eastern medicine has used this model for healing and lots of medicinal purposes. And most Eastern cultures are healthier than most Americans. We live in abundance where we have time to complain on these forums. This can help a lot of people in the US. Its an opener to change your lifestyle and live well.

My best friend killed herself while on Purium products for “weight loss.” She got very spaced out and depressed. I don’t trust this company at all. Another person I know is in the hospital now having emergency surgery after using this! Beware!

I’ve been going to the bathroom a lot and doing diaharrea is this part of the cleaning process is it normal ?

the peeing part, yes, the diarrhea… no… I am on my 4 time doing this cleanse (over the last 6 years)

MY NEICE SAYS THE PURIUM PRODUCTS WILL CURE YOU FROM THE COVID 19, WHAT THE HECK? THAN WHY ARE THE SCIENTIEST OR DOCTORS USING IT TO CURE PATIENTS. PLEASE…. LIES, LIES, LIES

Bob D says:

I’ve been looking and looking and cannot find the source of the ingredients used by Purium it obviously is not grown and cultivated in Long Beach but there’s no mention anywhere of where any of his products are sourced

Lissette says:

Wow I am shocked someone said they kept her money? They do refund you and I returned a product that I did not like and no problems, I did pay for the shipping and my account was credited. The detox is not for everyone point blank! I did the original 40 day parasite detox and it was the best experience I had, a total reset and positive shift in my life and again it is not for someone who is not prepared to take full responsibility for their health. I prepped weeks before. I even stopped drinking coffee before detox and still till this day coffee is a treat not a craving, which I would never believe. The green powershake I used was the apple flavor one and it is delish. The Biomedic product is a must, regardless if you eat organic or not, it reduces the glyphosate by 74%. The foods to eat suggested by Purium were all great. The Fulvic Zeolite is best for metals in our bodies, Ion Elements awesome, great immune support etc.. I can go on with all the products that I still use and enjoy after 2 years of discovering Purium I joined them and receive great discount and offers. I truly hope people will do their research about the integrity and quality of Purium and their products…I always say it’s a lifestyle not a quick diet fad…

120299 says:

Wow. This was awful. I started out on day one and hours later started uncontrollably vomiting. I got sent home from work due to this product and will be returning for a refund. I am actually afraid to even try it again it made me so sick.
