We had a chance to visit with Bob Harper, the Biggest Loser blue team trainer, today just moments after his afternoon workout. It’s proof that he’s practicing what he preaches to the contestants of the show, now in its sixth season. “I love my job,” says Bob, who is as vocally passionate about the role he plays in helping these people regain their health as you see on the show. He says his mantra is “get healthy, get healthy, get healthy.”
Prior to his role on Biggest Loser, Bob was a celebrity trainer, where he explained he’d help already-fit people “turn their six packs into eight packs and get from a size four to a size two.” Biggest Loser very much changed the way he trains because he’s working with “everyday people,” and it is his responsibility to show them how to not only lose weight, but to do so in a healthy, well-rounded way.
This season, one of the people Bob is transforming is Vicky Vilcan. We brought her up specifically because she’s the only player we’ve ever seen cause such a ripple amongst Biggest Loser fans, who are a pretty devout group. Bob himself has called her “Shakespearean” and a “puppet-master,” but he explains that who you see on the show is exactly who the producers want you to see. “Vicky is the biggest fan of this show and loves reality TV, she played the game tough,” he remarks.
Vicky is one of Bob’s eight contestants this season, who coincidentally all hail from southern states. He says that the team he built was not by design, that they just happened to call his home region home as well. He comments that the South is the most unhealthy in the country, and he’s confident that these contestants will inspire change there.
With the holidays right around the corner, Bob offered some suggestions to help people survive and still enjoy the season. For Thanksgiving, Bob recommends:
1. Get Involved with Menu Planning.
2. Don’t Eat Yourself Into a Coma.
3. Find Time to Take a Walk.
If you like to give food-related gifts, Bob recommends replacing cookie and muffin baskets with fruit baskets, all-natural desserts (instead of refined sugars), and even wine, because of all the health benefits red wine offers.
You can see Bob Harper each Tuesday on NBC’s Biggest Loser, or follow his advice at home with his book “Are You Ready?”. He said he’s just finished working on new boot camp and yoga DVDs, as well as a video game.
Good stuff. Let’s hope and pray that Bob’s video game is better than his fellow trainer’s video game!
Good to hear from Bob. He always breaks it down to very simple terms and has a very calming influence.
“he explains that who you see on the show is exactly who the producers want you to see. “Vicky is the biggest fan of this show and loves reality TV, she played the game tough,” he remarks.”
That’s all well and good, but that does not negate the fact that the focus of TBL went from inspiration/education to Survivor-style game-play.
The show is no longer the joy and inspiration it was. The focus is not longer on the workouts and advice, but on the drama created by people behaving badly.
I don’t care if it’s the producers and editors who are making Vicki and Heba look THIS bad. That is more reason, for me, to quit watching.
I despise reality t.v. The only reality show I watch is TBL … now I don’t watch any. Sorry.
I have watched Biggest Loser nearly every session every year. This
yr focus is not what I have liked as in the past. Bob, I have your book and need it to work for me!! Hope that the next yr focus goes back to the previous focus!! A 72yr old viewer!!
i agree with Joan. . . This season was not the best. The producers made me not like Vicky and Heba. I hope the next one will focus more on the workouts and advice but I still love to see Bob and Julian. Everyone have a Great Thanksgiving ! ! !
I no longer watch TBL either. I hate all the cursing and focus on nastiness. I would hope the winner would be a beautiful person on the inside. That when all the layers of weight get pulled away they themselves see that. I really like that Bob usually focuses on that but this season a big thumbs down!
I agree with all the comments….I hate this season. If Bob hadn’t convinced Amy to focus on the “team” , Vicky would have been voted off instead of Colleen. I can only hope that either Renee or Michelle win they are the only ones that deserve it.
Hey im new to the forum
and would like to contribute
Thanks
Vicky’s not Shakespearean, but Machiavellian…sadly Bob influenced Amy’s decision to keep Vicky around, and now Amy’s gone 🙁
No hard feelings to Bob though, because I love him to death and I understand why he wanted to keep the blue team together.
As I’ve posted before … yes, the show is edited and we see what the producers want us to see. However, as far as Vicky is concerned, it’s what she has SAID along with her actions, facial expressions and body language that speak volumes. Editing cannot hide that and unfortunately she is not coming across in a good light. On one show even Brady told her that was enough. And I agree, Bob was influential in Amy’s decision to keep Vicky and send Coleen home.
I am here at a forum newcomer. Until I read and deal with the forum.
Let’s learn!
Good to hear from Bob.
