In case you have missed it, rapper Rick Ross has lost over 100 pounds in the past year, and he is crediting his success to one main thing: pears! Ross has recently been very open about his love for pears, literally causing an increase in the fruit’s popularity in America.
“I eat pears now…” Ross proudly claims in an interview. “Shout out to all the pear.”
That simple statement in an interview with Tim Westwood has gained more than 300,000 views on YouTube and spawned an equally popular Vine video.
There has since been a lot of humor around Ross’ pear shout out. It has been reported that the pear emoji for the iOS keyboard has risen in popularity since Ross made the pear character his Instagram description. Even more surprising, the United States’ spokesperson for pears, Kathy Stephenson, even reported that her company’s Twitter account @USAPears has gained followers since Ross endorsed the fruit.
“On behalf of our 1,600 pear growers from the Northwest region, we are pleased that Rick has mentioned the health benefits of pears,” Stephenson reported to Modern Farmer. “Overall, we could not be more pleased with our message being delivered to a new, young and hip demographic.”
Pears may have Ross to thank for their sudden boost in popularity, but clearly he is thankful to them, as well. Pears are actually an excellent aid in weight loss (as opposed to, say, vodka for Ed Sheeran).
Pears are rich in antioxidants, flavonoids, dietary fiber, and usually weigh in at only 100 calories per piece of fruit. In a single pear, there are approximately six grams of fiber, which is about a quarter of the daily fiber intake recommended for women under 50. Fiber is highly credited in weight loss because of how well it keeps you feeling full for longer periods of time. Pears are also said to prevent constipation, lower the risk of diabetes, and lower blood pressure.
It certainly is the season for pears, as well! Ross also credits CrossFit for his weight loss, which he endearingly refers to as “RossFit.”
