For many Americans, Super Bowl Sunday means two things: beer and junk food. We gravitate to the greasy snacks we love – nachos, wings and pizza – but loathe that next morning feeling. The truth is, the big game involves many guilty pleasures that can upset the digestive system and cause discomfort. If you wake up on Monday feeling crampy, constipated or fatigued, rest assured you are not alone.
Dr. Cynthia Yoshida, a gastroenterologist and the author of No More Digestive Problems shared her easy fixes to ensure you’re still feeling “super” the day after your football festivities.
Water Down Your Hangover. For sports fans, beer is the perfect complement to the big game. To help ease the inevitable hangover, try alternating a non-alcoholic drink after every beer to stay hydrated. Make sure to reach for an option that isn’t carbonated and is caffeine-free.
The Drugstore Aisle is Your Friend. Dr. Yoshida urges consumers to educate themselves about over-the-counter options to treat occasional constipation. If you are experiencing this issue, Dr. Yoshida recommends a gentle product like MiraLAX. It’s safe to use and does not cause the unpleasant side effects that come to mind when people think of the word “laxative.”
Hit the Gym…But Not Too Hard. Though your first instinct may be to hit the snooze button, being active in the morning will help jump start your metabolism and leave you feeling better. It’s best to ease into exercise after an eventful night with a brisk walk to get your body feeling super again.
