Yes, you heard me: eat fat to lose fat.
“But, isn’t fat is bad for my health? And, doesn’t it cause heart disease?” I hear you say. The answer to both is no.
For many centuries, cultures (like the French) have been eating high fat diets and, oddly enough, they have much lower rates of obesity and type II diabetes than we do here in the United States. You see, what happened was back in the 1950’s some scientists ran a small and very poorly designed study looking at the incidence of heart disease and the dietary habits of different nations. Somehow (after leaving out a great bit of data) these researchers determined that Americans hearty full-fat diet caused the most heart disease. And, voila now American’s eat a low-fat diet because their doctors recommend it.
However, when the information compiled from the original 1950’s study was re-analyzed including a total of 22 countries, dietary fat consumption was shown to have zero effect on heart disease. In fact, in 2024 The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published an analysis of all the heart disease-dietary fat studies out there and found, “no significant evidence for concluding that dietary saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease or cardiovascular disease.”
So, now that you’re not afraid to eat fat, let’s get on with what types of fat you need to be eating to trim down and stay lean as all fats are not created equal. Trans fats and fats from highly processed vegetable oils (like corn and soybean oil) will most definitely make you fat as they are toxic and cause rampant oxidation in your body. But, eating naturally occurring (and, preferably organic) saturated and polyunsaturated fats (the kind found in olive oil, butter, eggs and avocados) will not only help you lose weight but they will render you exceptional health!
Eating fat not only helps you lose weight, your body needs fat to function optimally—so if you don’t eat fat, your body will hold onto fat and you won’t lose any weight. In addition, if you don’t eat fat you will have no energy to do anything, your brain will feel foggy and the chances of you having cellulite and increased wrinkles increases dramatically. Yikes.
Lastly, eating fat helps you lose fat because fat keeps you full longer. When you are full longer, you snack less.
The bottom line:
- Eat 2-3 ounces of fat 3 times of day from sources like eggs, olive oil, avocado, meat and coconut oil and lose weight!
- Eat fat and have more energy, a clearer mind and plump skin (not a plump butt).
- Do not eat processed or packaged low fat or fat-free foods as they are often loaded with noxious chemicals that will make you unhealthy and cause your body to hold onto weight.
- Don’t be afraid to eat saturated and polyunsaturated fats as they do NOT cause heart disease.
