Food Puzzle Food Journal App Is Puzzling

food journal app for iPhone and iPadA food journaling app that prides itself on being different, Food Puzzle not only helps users keep track of calories and daily intake of key nutrients, it also can make suggestions to help you create a balanced meal-plan. Although this iPhone and iPad app offers a great concept, they still have a few kinks to work through.

After registering with your name, email and stats, you can go to the “Search” tool and find the foods you have eaten that day. After you have saved several foods for the day (by hitting the “I ate this” button), click over to “Meters” to see what percentage of calories you’ve used for the day, in addition to how much of 14 essential nutrients you’ve consumed, plus sodium, cholesterol, saturated fat and total fat. You can use the “Sliders” feature to get recommendations of foods that contain these nutrients from a variety of categories, like cereal, dairy, fruits, veggies and even fast food. If a food you have eaten is not in the database, then you can manually input the item using the “+ Food” feature (which confusingly does not add food to your daily journal). When you input a new food, be prepared to have all the nutrition info handy, as it’s not provided for you, not just calories. Go over to the “Trainer” feature to add any physical actives you’ve done.

Victoria Beckham’s Power Supplement is Sun Chlorella

Green is the new black. Especially when it comes to food. But as most of us know, eating your daily greens, whether it’s a salad or a vegetable-based smoothie, sometimes takes more time than our busy lives allow for. While we may not always heed the advice of health experts, when celebrities dish about their favorite health and diet secrets, we listen. When the makers of Sun Chlorella, an algae-based supplement, claimed that the newly-pregnant Victoria Beckham is a fan, the ears of many of us media-hungry and health-minded commoners were pricked.

Sun Chlorella is a green algae supplement that hails from a Japan-based company.

According to the company’s website, Chlorella is a single-cell green algae made up of 60 percent pure plant protein. Sun Chlorella possesses an astonishing quantity and variety of nutrients providing the body with the required daily dose of essential amino acids, vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, vitamin D, folic acid, iron and fiber. In terms of iron content alone, it has the same amount of nutritional benefits as nine cups of spinach. (more…)

Seth Rogen Uses Diet and Exercise to Lose Weight and Live Longer

Remember when Seth Rogen, everyone’s lovable chubby stoner, was actually chubby? It’s getting more and more difficult to remember. It’s now to the point where his new look is no longer new and the old Seth is a distant memory.

Not only has Rogen kept the weight off for a couple years now, he’s beaten even tougher odds and become a super hero action star in “The Green Hornet”! The unlikely role has been a hit so far, making over $40 million in its first week of release. All of this from someone who can barely take anything seriously.

He certainly doesn’t make much of a motivational speaker.

“Uh, stay fat, people. That’s my motto. It’s no picnic,” says Rogen in an interview with The Long Island Press. (more…)

Miss America Teresa Scanlan Promotes a Healthy Lifestyle and Body Image for Young Women

Teresa Scanlan is the newest Miss America. She is also the youngest woman, at 17 years of age, to win this title since 1938 when an age limit was implemented for the pageant. Joy Behar, one of the judges of the pageant, commented on Scanlan’s “cute” bikini body that was a completely “cellulite-free zone.”

So, what are the diet secrets this beautiful young woman uses to stay in such great shape? Surprisingly, she does not use any “beauty tricks,” but instead relies on moderation, an active lifestyle, and her age to stay in shape.

A younger person will have a more active metabolism than an older person because a person’s metabolism slows down with age. This decline usually starts between ages 25 and 30 for women. Constantly putting your body through fad diets and extreme dieting can also slow your natural metabolism.

Four Reasons You Are Not Losing Weight

By Jessie Gorges

Stepping on the scale and still not liking what you see? It could be that you’re unknowingly making common errors in your new-found diet plan. Check out these four misconceptions that dieters think will help with weight-loss but, in reality, are ineffective and often detrimental.

You avoid the foods you love: Deprivation diets don’t work, at least not for long. You can still eat chocolate and you can still put a slice of cheese on your sandwich. The key to eating these commonly-craved foods is eating them in moderation. Have a couple of fun-size Snickers bars to solve your chocolate craving, and relegate your sandwich to only one slice of cheese instead of two.

What is a Calorie Deficit?

If you’ve been dieting for any length of time, you’ve undoubtedly heard the words “calorie deficit.” It’s a big term that has a very simple meaning. At its most basic, a calorie deficit is an equation for successful weight loss.  Just as 1+2=3 is true, calories burned – calories ingested = weight loss.

A calorie, by definition, is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a kilogram of water by one degree  Celsius. In its more common use, it is used to determine how much the foods that you eat will affect your weight. A calorie deficit is created when the amount of food energy (calories) you take in is less than the total calories you use, and it is the difference between what you eat and what your body burns. In order to lose weight, you will need to create a calorie deficit. This means that your body will turn to stored energy to function and you will see a weight loss. The size of the calorie deficit will determine how much weight you will lose.

If You Only Keep One of Your Resolutions, Make it More Fruit

Research shows that more than 50 percent of New Year’s resolutions, most of which have to do with diet or nutrition, don’t last beyond January.  Two leading nutritionists aim to reverse that trend by encouraging people to focus on one realistic and attainable resolution: eat more fruit.

According to Stephanie Clarke and Willow Jarosh, licensed nutritionists, registered dietitians, and co-founders of C&J Nutrition, fruit is an essential part of a healthy diet because it contains large amounts of naturally occurring key nutrients like vitamins A and C, potassium, fiber, and phytonutrients – all key players in disease prevention.  “Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that’s important for growth and repair of all body tissues. Potassium can help maintain healthy muscle and nerve function and lower blood pressure, and fiber is woefully amiss in most American diets,” said Jarosh.

Starbucks Trenta Is Twice the Size of Your Bladder

Starbucks Cups

There are many good things to say about Starbucks. They offer Fair Trade coffee, they’ve made a considerable effort to serve lower-calorie options and have cut artificial flavors and coloring out of their foods. I love their chai, which can be ordered with soy or low fat milk.

However, the new Trenta size is really pushing the limits of the human body. My first reaction to the new drink was visceral, the idea of that much caffeine and coffee makes my stomach hurt just thinking about it. Then I was sent a graphic from The National Post, revealing that the Starbucks Trenta is actually 16 milliliters bigger than the average human stomach. A iced Venti beverage hold 591 milliliters of liquid, a human stomach holds about 900 milliliters and the Trenta contains 916 milliliters. You may not want to drink one of these beverages before you go for a long drive, because your bladder can normally hold 400 to 600 milliliters.

The largest beverage size will be limited to iced coffee, Tazo shaken iced tea and iced tea lemonade. Starbucks tested the Trenta for about a year, which was created in response to consumer and employee suggestions. Happily, while these giant drinks may stretch your stomach, they won’t necessarily ruin your diet. May Kulthol, a spokeswoman for Starbucks, told The Wall Street Journal that unsweetened Trenta drinks have less than 90 calories, while the sweetened versions have 230.
