Just over 20 years ago I was looking through some photos I’d just developed of my best friend’s birthday party. As I scanned the photos I was struck by one of a large lady holding my infant son. It took me only seconds to realize that the large lady was me.

I had never had a weight problem and suddenly this photo forced me to come to terms with the fact that I put on about 30 pounds after the birth of my son. That’s right – after. I had developed a six-doughnut-a-day habit and my exclusive role was nurturing and nursing my baby… and eating. I vividly remember finishing his baby food straight from the jar. I was eating for the sake of eating. (more…)

The Cost of Losing 20 Pounds

Price of Weight LossThere are many factors that go into choosing to sign up for a diet plan, and cost is one of the most carefully considered. Jeanne Lee for CBS MoneyWatch takes a look at this question from a unique perspective: the cost to lose 20 pounds. She calculates the cost per pound lost for eighth different popular weight-loss systems. Most of these diets are meal delivery services that provide balanced, portion controlled foods. On the other hand, Weight Watchers and eDiets are support-only programs provide the customer with tips, goals and meal plans, but not food. These support-based programs are far cheaper per pound lost, but some may find them hard to follow.

In the end, the diet program that’s the best investment is the one that helps you lead a healthier lifestyle and see long-term results. MoneyWatch recommends the diets with proven track records and economical fees.

McDonald’s “Big America” Is a Hit in Japan

McDonalds in Japan

McDonald's Texas 2 Burger

Although Japan is often associated with long lives and a healthy diet, McDonald’s is fattening its menu with burgers named after places in America. The burgers are topped with unconventional ingredients and clock in with extremely high calorie counts.

The Texas 2 burger features chili, three buns, cheese, bacon and totals 645 calories. The Miami burger has 557 calories and contains tortilla chips. The Manhattan burger consists of pastrami and mozzarella cheese stacked on top of the beef patty.

Although McDonald’s has tried to give customers healthier options in the United States, the chain restaurant is trying to capitalize on image of “Big America” in Japan. The burgers are only available for a limited time, and many Japanese want to try them before they’re gone.

McDonald’s Fruit and Maple Oatmeal is Maple Free

McDonald’s new Fruit and Maple Oatmeal has landed the company in a syrupy spot with the Vermont Agency of Agriculture. The company alleges that the oatmeal doesn’t actually contain maple, and they’ve requested that McDonald’s change the recipe or change the name. Labeling a food as containing maple when it actually doesn’t is in violation of Vermont’s well known “Maple” law.

“What we understand, is there is no actual maple in the [McDonald’s] product being advertised. Vermont maple law and regulations are very specific for how the term maple is used in advertisements,” Kelly Loftus, VAA spokesperson told Slashfood. “It is illegal to use the word maple  on a product unless the sweetener is 100 percent pure maple. Artificial maple flavoring should be clearly and conspicuously labeled on the principal panel with the term ‘artificial flavor’.”

Kale Chips: A Healthy Snack with Crunch

Raw Kale

Kale Before Baking

I first tried kale chips at the ultra healthy Brooklyn restaurant, Sun In Bloom, where I got a free sample with my veggie wrap. I’m pretty adventurous when it comes to food, but I can’t say I expected to like the dark green snack. I was surprised to find it delicious. Some boast that you can substitute kale chips for potato chips, and it’s not as far-fetched as you would think.

I’m a little leery of the term “super food,” but if anything fits that title, it’s kale. This leafy green is an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, manganese and dietary fiber, according to WHFoods. The health benefits of kale have not been thoroughly researched, but we do know that it’s a rich source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients. You can buy kale chips from health food stores, or other crunchy kale snacks. I decided to make my own.

Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem Make Changes for 2024

The diet industry is constantly evolving. That means even the big three in weight loss – Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and Nutrisystem – are all making various changes to their plans. Here is what you can expect in 2024:

Weight Watchers

One of Weight Watchers’ most famous and popular attributes is going by “PointsPlus.” Based on new nutritional science the nutritional values accounted for have been updated and encourage people to eat less processed foods with added sugars and fats and more natural foods that satisfy more and take more energy to digest.

Under PointsPlus, dieters get an allotment of points each day. Karen Miller-Kovach, the scientist who created Weight Watchers PointsPlus, compares the overhaul to what goes on in the car industry.

“The same car will get a tweak or two every model year. Then, once a decade, it gets a total re-design,” says Miller-Kovach. See the Weight Watchers PointsPlus 2024 Update. (more…)

Burger King Stuffs More Fat into Steakhouse Burger

Burger king sandwichHow do pump more fat into a beef patty? Burger King responds: inject chunks of cheese. Their latest novelty food item is the BK Stuffed Steakhouse burger, which has the cheese pre-loaded into the meat patty, along with some jalapeños. The burger is “topped off with creamy poblano sauce,” according to the company’s press release. We’ll assume that “creamy” means mayo-based or something equivalently fatty. The burger is also served with lettuce and tomato.

Using the “limited time only” McRib-style strategy to hype the new burger, the “premium” sandwich will sell for $3.99. Of course, Burger King has not allowed the publication of nutrition info to mar the announcement of the sandwich, so we will be left to guesstimate its caloric content.
