Can a Soda Tax Prevent Obesity?

When I was much heavier, I had a massive soda addiction. I drank more than a 2 liter a day. (I know. I’m hanging my head in shame right now.) Part of that came from a daily stop at McDonald’s to grab an extra large Coke on the way to pick up the kids. I see other people doing this exact same thing all the time, and it’s everything I can do to keep my mouth shut. I don’t think anyone wants to hear my input on how bad their soda intake is for them, but I wonder if the government spoke up – would it have an affect?

Several of the nation’s leading health experts are calling for a tax on soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks as a means of curbing America’s ever growing obesity epidemic, with children as the age bracket with the highest levels of rising obesity. A report was recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine touting the benefits of such a tax.

From the report:

“We can raise much-needed dollars while likely reducing obesity prevalence, which is a major driver of health care costs,” the paper states. “Ultimately the government needs to raise more money to cover the deficit, and in terms of ways of raising that revenue, a tax on sugar sweetened beverages is really a no-brainer.” (more…)

An Overview of What is Gluten

Let’s begin with what is gluten exactly? Gluten is a composite of proteins found in wheat, bulgur, couscous, barley, spelt and rye to name the most common grains it can be found it. The reason this protein has become such a common term over the years is because of the ailments it has been found to cause in people. Individuals that are gluten-intolerant meaning their bodies cannot process and digest the protein and have an adverse immune response are referred to as having celiac disease. Worldwide, celiac disease occurs in almost one percent of the human population and the statistic continues to increase. If you have been diagnosed with celiac disease you know that it is an autoimmune disorder that affects the small intestine in people of all ages. Depending on the severity of the reaction to the disease symptoms can include fatigue, diarrhea, and the inability to absorb nutrients.

Gluten is widely used in baking products as it helps with enhancing elasticity, which affects the texture of baked goods as well as leads to a softer, chewier product for such products as bagels, pizzas and cakes. Other products where gluten is used is ice cream, ketchup, and even toothpaste. The reason for this is because gluten can act as a stabilizing agent meaning a thickener or gelling agent. (more…)

Fresh Diet Takes Up Michelle Obama’s Childhood Obesity Cause

Call it brilliant marketing and timing, but the makers of The Fresh Diet are bringing their delivery services to the nation’s capital at a time when Michelle Obama is taking a high-profile stance against childhood obesity, thanks to her new organization Let’s Move.

The marketing brilliance not only comes with how the company has timed the move to expand their services to Washington, D.C. as a way to hop on board with first lady Michelle Obama’s initiative, but the press release announcing the move cleverly states that the gourmet delivery service “unites” with the First Lady’s battle against obesity. No, they aren’t tied to Mrs. Obama’s efforts in any formal way, but both parties share a common and noble goal.

“It seemed like the perfect time to do this, particularly as the First Lady has made obesity – especially among our children, a key issue during her tenure in the White House,” says Zalmi Duchman, CEO of The Fresh Diet. (more…)

Kim Fine’s True Weight Loss Story: “I Rewrote My Life Story.”

You could say that Kim Fine resembles a typical up-and-coming 20-something: she lives in the big city (of Chicago), works in advertising and has a lot of friends. But one thing that was different about Kim than her peers was that she wasn’t living like them. She avoided social functions and a lot of the benefits of living in a city like Chicago, in an industry like advertising. Why? Because in January 2024 Kim was at, what she calls, an all-time high and low.

Kim weighed 321.6 pounds on January 20, 2024. The all-time high was her weight, the all-time low was feeling trapped within herself and depressed. She says she wasn’t living the life a 24-year-old should. “I distinctly remember thinking to myself for years I was absolutely meant to be fat because my body must not know how to be thin,” Kim told us. “It was all I had really ever known.”

That day in January would be the last of that life and the first of this new life. “I rewrote my life story,” says Kim, but she didn’t do it overnight. Today, Kim is 25 and weighs 168 pounds, a dramatic 154-pound loss that she says is still in progress and that has completely changed this woman’s outlook and approach to life.

Want to know how she did it? Impressively, the old-fashioned way with hard work, more exercise, healthy dietary changes, and a commitment to herself. “I am not superwoman or more inclined to success than anyone else in this world,” Kim says humbly.

Hear Kim discuss Jillian Michaels’ Master Your Metabolism, which she credits with giving her the education she needed to get her food and fitness in control.

Benefits and Side Effects of L-Carnitine Supplementation

L-carnitine is a popular fitness supplement, but is it right for you? L-carnitine is mainly found in avocados, dairy products, and red meats (lamb and beef). It is also naturally made in the body from amino acids and used to increase the use of fat as an energy source by transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria (located in the cytoplasm outside the nucleus of the cell), where they are burned to release energy for body functions.

L-carnitine supplementation should not be used by those who are allergic to any food protein (egg, milk, or wheat), risk of poor nutrition, pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, or other health risks or problems. First off, you should contact your physician about taking any supplements. If you do decide to use the L-carnitine supplement, it is recommended to take the supplement with a full glass of water or other liquid and with a meal or immediately after a meal. I strongly recommend researching this supplement as well as any other supplements before usage. Below are lists of the benefits and side-effects of L-carnitine.  (more…)

Helping Teen Girls Avoid Diet Pills

Constantly bombarded by images of super skinny, size 0 models and movie stars such as Mary-Kate Olsen, teenage girls are sent overwhelming messages to be skinnier, smaller, and even tinier than ever. One tool that many young girls are turning to is the use of diet pills, such as hoodia and Hydroxycut.

A 2006 University of Minnesota found that more than 20% of 19-year-old girls confess to using diet pills. “These numbers are startling, and they tell us we need to do a better job of helping our daughters feel better about themselves and avoid unhealthy weight control behaviors,” University of Minnesota professor and study researcher Dianne Neumark-Sztainer said. (Neumark-Sztainer is also the author of the popular book, “I’m, Like, So Fat!“.)

Diet pills are ineffective and in many cases, extremely dangerous, even to the point of being linked to death in users. The study also found that more than 62% of teenage girls use unhealthy weight control behaviors, including the use of diet pills, laxatives, vomiting or skipping meals to control their weight. The study found that teenage males had rates that were less than half of the females. So, clearly, there is a problem facing our girls.

What can we do to help our daughters avoid these unhealthy actions? (more…)

Are You Loading up on Veggies in the Cold Winter?

In “Now Eat This,” Chef Rocco Dispirito Makes Over America’s Favorite Comfort Foods

now eat this

Check-out Rocco’s much-anticipated follow-up, in our review of the Now Eat This! Diet, released March 22, 2024.

If you ask me what my favorite foods are, all the healthy living aside, I will tell you without hesitation they are fried chicken and baked macaroni and cheese. For dessert, I would likely choose a fat brownie. Now a meal like that would set me back well beyond a day’s worth of 2,000 calories, and double the 65g of recommended total fat per day. That’s why I never eat these foods.

So when I opened “Now Eat This,” the newest cookbook from Chef Rocco Dispirito, and found that I could have fried chicken, mac ‘n cheese and a brownie for less than 500 calories and less than 20g of fat, I was very interested. And I think you will be, too!

A few years ago, Rocco realized he’d put on about 30 pounds. That’s what happens when you work around food for more than 25 years; in Rocco’s case, really good food. So he set-out to change that, calling himself “a latecomer to the diet/exercise weight loss experience.” He says his body protested, carrying 20 percent body fat, but he pushed through with the help of a trainer and a dedicated fitness plan. He followed a modified Atkins diet, gave up alcohol and carbs and stuck to high-protein eats. That, plus double-cardio sessions six days a week, helped him get back in shape, and take on a triathlon and an iron man. (more…)

Denny’s Endless Pancakes and Fries Not a Healthy Idea

dennys pancakesIn an effort to be competitive with other restaurant promotions, such as IHOP’s offering of Never Ending Pancakes on February 24, Denny’s has come out with a whopper of a bad idea. Starting now and continuing through the end of March, Denny’s is offering unlimited free refills of both French fries and pancakes at participating locations nationwide. Valid 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the offer applies to any order of French fries or pancakes served with an entrée, including both original buttermilk pancakes and Denny’s Hearty Wheat pancakes.

Clearly times are still hard and everyday we’re all looking for ways to stretch hard-earned dollars farther and farther,” said John Dillon, Vice President Marketing, Denny’s Corporation. “By offering unlimited refills on not just one but two favorite items, we are able to provide even more everyday value on items our guests love. Who doesn’t want seconds of pancakes and fries… especially when they’re free?”

Repeat after me – free is not always good. And often free comes with a non-monetary price tag. (more…)
