FDA to Take a Close Look at Food Labels; ‘May Contain’ Labels Don’t Do Enough to Protect People With Allergies

A food allergy is an immune system response to a food that the body mistakenly believes is harmful. Although someone could be allergic to any food, such as fruits, veggies, and meats, there are eight foods that account for 90% of all food-allergic reactions, including egg, peanut, tree nut (walnut, etc.), fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat. Food allergies are very common, effecting more than 12 million Americans, and have a wide range in severity, from a simple rash breakout to death. When grocery shopping, people with food allergies do their best to carefully read food labels to avoid a possible adverse reaction. However, many people feel the labels reading ‘may contain’ instead of clearly stating specifically what is in the product leaves to much room for a potential reaction.

Bernie’s Biggest Loser Episode 4 Recap Part II

Get up-to-speed with Bernie’s recap of Part I.

Due to the presidential debate last night, episode 4 of the Biggest Loser was cut short, however tonight the wonderful folks over at NBC aired the second hour of the show. The second half of the show proved to be worth the wait! In the second part of episode 4, we saw Jillian really get tough and rightfully so, her teams weren’t doing the homework that she was assigning, which on the Biggest Loser is just as bad as sneaking snack cakes in the middle of the night!

We also saw Bob take his team to SUBWAY for a quick bite to eat, which is good because trying to find a place to eat on the go in the “real world” isn’t easy. I love the fact that the show is sharing information with viewers about how to make smart choices when eating out.

At the weigh-in, we saw the orange team Ed and Heba fall below the dreaded yellow line. The orange team was then forced to decide who was going home amongst themselves. In the end, Ed wound up going home leaving Heba to continue on her own.

During his at home follow-up, Ed looked Great! I wish him continued success at home and consider him a real contender for this year’s At-Home prize.

Review

A makeover for your body, skin and hair? Hmm… I’m intrigued. That is what the Revival Diet is all about. But here’s an important FYI for you: The website address is the Revival Diet, but the actual diet name is Dr. Tabor’s Slim and Beautiful Diet.

Slim and beautiful diet

So what is this inside-out beauty and weight loss regimen all about? The plan itself is a bit confusing to follow. You’ll choose from a list of products like Dr. Tabor’s signature line of snacks, entrees, and protein shakes and create your own meal plan. You’re given some estimated, but by no means precise, guidelines to follow. For instance, you should consume about 1,200 calories a day, but you can “eat a piece of fruit” or “have a sensible dinner” in order to meet these calorie requirements on the Makeover Package.  All of Dr. Tabor’s foods do come with their own nutrition information so there is no guesswork in your calculations if you are just going to limit yourself to eating his products.

I had the recent opportunity to test out some of his “non naughty nibbles.” These crackers come in a variety of flavors like “smaller belt bbq,” and “smaller ring size ranch,” and are made of potato starch and soy protein. They taste like a cross between a cracker and a soy chip and they look like Crispix, the rice and corn cereal duo by Kellogg’s. I was a bit surprised by how much of a spicy punch they packed, especially for the ranch flavor. Each bag contains 100 calories and seven grams of protein. They are definitely crunchy and they quelled my salt-need.

Soy foodsI haven’t sampled any of his beauty products like digestive enzymes, calcium and complete vitamin and mineral supplements.

Each of Dr. Tabor’s foods have quite a unique name to them which makes eating them a bit more entertaining. And his foods are nutritionally-balanced  and many of his shakes, bars and snack foods contain soy, an ingredient that Dr. Tabor feels is a true Superfood.

Here is a complete review of The Revival Diet.

The Conclusion of my Biggest Loser Meal Plan Experience

The Biggest Loser Meal Plan, from Bistro MD, was a good choice for us. We followed it for five weeks and I lost almost ten pounds and have kept it off in the three months since ending the plan. My husband didn’t do quite as well, but he didn’t follow it all three meals a day like I did.

Overall the food was pretty tasty, of course, there were  exceptions – most notably the waffles and the turkey dinners — I’m a tough critic, but would give the food  9 out of 10 stars. It’s good enough that you won’t feel like you’re on a diet or eating diet foods.

Preparation was as easy as touted – boil or microwave the meals, add a salad and we were all set.  We’re an older couple with late and sporadic work hours, so whenever we were ready — the meals would be ready in just a few minutes.

In spite of what I consider the high cost ($250) a week for both of us for the five day plan, including shipping, we were interested in staying with the program for another month or two. The deciding factor was the delivery day — since we had to stay with a Saturday delivery throughout the summer, we stopped the program.

Since we’ve finished with the plan, I’ve thought about calling and ordering a few more weeks worth of meals just to have in the freezer for those times when we don’t have the time or inclination to cook.  If you’re looking for an easy and quick meal plan program, try The Biggest Loser Meal Plan from Bistro MD.

Folate for Breast Cancer Prevention

You commonly hear how important folate is for women in their childbearing years.  This is because research has proven time and time again that folate is critical in reducing risks of neural tube defects. Studies also show that folate can help reduce your risk of breast cancer. Now knowing this information, you may be wondering how to incorporate more folate into your diet.

Some great sources of folate, include:

– Legumes (black beans, kidney beans, black-eyed peas)
– Fruits
– Vegetables
– Leafy green veggies (spinach, broccoli)
– Fortified grains
– Liver

Take care when cooking and storing these items though, heat and oxidation can destroy as much as half of the folate in foods.

This week we’re going to talk about: apples. (I’m sure you probably guessed that from the photo!) Apples are probably one of the more perfect fruits out there. It’s hard to find a person who doesn’t like an apple. You can pack an apple for a great side dish to lunch, grab an apple for a mid-afternoon snack. They’re healthy snacks that provide natural sugars to give you that mid-day boost.

And you see, there are so many different varieties of apples that there is literally an apple for everyone. We’ve got honey crisp (the first picture), Gala, McIntosh, Red Delicious, Granny Smith…the list goes on. From red skin to green skin, new apple cultivars are being created what seems like every day.

But if you think the list of apple varieties is long, try counting all the dishes you can make with apples! Yes, it’s nearly impossible, but Chew on That is here to get your own list started and help you brainstorm some new apple dishes to make this fall.

Since apples are inherently sweet, they lend themselves to a great deal of delicious desserts that don’t need extra sugar! Make your favorites with these recipes:

Another lighter and luscious apple dessert is the infamous apple dumpling, try Apple Almond Dumplings for a tasty recipe. Or, try some On the Trail Caramel Apples that provide a crunchy outside to your ordinary caramel apple that’s topped with candy.

Apples can also make some tasty, thirst-quenching beverages. Try out a few of our favorites:

Brown Rice Added to FDA List of Whole Grains

In May of 2024, the FDA finally added brown rice to its list of whole grain products, which allowed it the right to bear the Whole Grain Health Claim. This claim states that the food contains at least 51% whole grains and can specifically say, “Diets rich in whole grain foods and other plant foods and low in total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers.”

Since there is no lab test to determine “the whole grain content,” the FDA decided in order to use the whole grain claim the product must be able to prove that the product meets or exceeds the fiber level of wheat. Originally, brown rice could not prove this claim and therefore was delayed from being added to the approved list and could not use the Whole Grain Health Claim.

Now, however, the FDA has clarified, that a compliance test is not necessary for brown rice or other single-ingredient whole grain foods. If the ingredients list shows that a product contains whole grain and nothing but whole grain, then it’s obvious that the package contains 100% whole grain and clearly exceeds the 51% requirement.

There are now numerous brown rice products out on the market, some in which all you have to do is throw it in the microwave. I encourage you to venture out and eat brown rice in place of white rice. You will never know if you like it or not until you try it…and if it’s better for your health then why wouldn’t you give it a taste?

We Get By With a Little Help From Our Friends

We all need emotional support and a little help from time to time, especially when undertaking any goals for life change. Important relationships provide a buffer from the negative effects of stressors, whether emotional or physical. Emotionally, relationships provide a sense of belongingness, giving one security and feelings of esteem and being accepted. The effects of social isolation have been compared to the impact of smoking cigarettes in the magnitude of physical stress. Research has shown that social isolation is linked to the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes (in mice), poor recovery after a stroke, lower immunity to disease, and a higher risk for cardiovascular problems. Most frighteningly, research has consistently shown that social isolation is linked to increased risk of death. Obviously, mental health and physical health are connected!friends

Friendship can have a positive impact on your health in plenty of other ways. Do you have these friends in your life?

My stylist and fabulous friend Phil is always exploring the newest health food or ingredient; more than that he takes the time to make delicious dishes from scratch all the time, introducing me to the wonders of these new discoveries.

My dear friend Roz, with her endless energy, organized her move to a new apartment over an entire week! What better way could there be to exercise muscles and friendship than to help someone move?

My enthusiastic dance partner Mike enrolled us in a competition and choreographed a routine in a new style, requiring us to put in several hours of rehearsal each week. (We even won second place!).

My marathon-running friend Mike used old fashioned peer pressure to get me to jog and purchase running shoes and my first iPod; he even physically drove me to the stores. I’m excited to run my second mini-marathon in May.

Wendy is amazing at watching what she eats and researching what should and shouldn’t be put in your body; she’s always happy to share all that she’s learned and makes every meal a learning experience.

Nick encourages me to try something new and crazy like RollerDerby! Maybe one of these days….

Jill’s son loves to get me outside to play catch with a football. Who can say no to a sweet child?

I have several friends within a mile of my home. Gas is expensive and parking isn’t easy downtown, especially on game days. We walk the city instead. I can justify brunch if I’m walking a mile or so there and back.

The next time you need to catch up with a friend, workout together rather than ordering pizza, or cook together rather than going out. Don’t forget that moving, planting a garden, and other such fun tasks can build muscles and a friendships when shared. The people in your life can be essential to your success. Make sure you have positive, health-oriented people within your circle of influence.

Experts Want Label Overhaul for Energy Drinks

I’ve been doing a lot of driving the last few weeks. With my brother visiting from out of town, I’ve taken a couple of road trips to show him around Northern California. And when the eyes started to get heavy after a few hours on the highway, I made a B-line for the next gas station to pick up an energy drink or coffee.

I usually prefer the perks of coffee, but once in a while when I need a little pick-me-up to avoid nodding off behind the wheel, I’ll hit the energy drink section of the gas station’s freezers to peruse the colorfully packaged legalized uppers.

While energy drinks are largely unregulated and safe for most people, that doesn’t mean they are harmless.

A study by the American Heart Association found that healthy participants who drank two energy drinks daily experienced blood pressure and heart rate increases. That alone isn’t necessarily alarming, as healthy adults can usually handle a momentary spike in blood pressure. But, for people with cardiac issues, or if normally healthy people drink too much, there could be dangers.energy drinks

A moderate amount of caffeine, about 2-3 cups of coffee a day, isn’t dangerous for healthy adults. But when you start creeping up to about 500-600 mg of caffeine, or between 4-7 cups, you run the risk of side effects such as anxiety, irritability, sleeplessness, headaches, gastrointestinal problems, and abnormal heart rhythms.

So, experts at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine are calling for regulations requiring energy drink makers to label their products with a list of its caffeine levels, and to warn of the potential for caffeine intoxication.

The American Beverage Association objects, stating that a 16oz. brewed cup of coffee contains 320 mg of caffeine, compared to 160 mg for a “mainstream energy drink.”

The key sticking point is that energy drinks are marketed as supplements, which don’t have caffeine limits enforced by the FDA. Experts would like to at least have the drinks labeled to show how much caffeine people are going to ingest if they purchase the product.

“It is a striking inconsistency that, in the U.S., an over-the-counter stimulant medication containing 100 mg. of caffeine per tablet must include [labeling]… whereas a 500 mg. energy drink can be marketed with no such warnings and no information on caffeine dose amount in the product,” wrote researchers.

What we’d like to see is a label clearly stating how much caffeine is in fact in one of these energy drinks, perhaps a warning label,” said Dr. Chad Reissig of Johns Hopkins.

Queen Latifah Tells Oprah How She Lost 20 Pounds

It was Queen vs. Queen today on the Oprah show. Queen Latifah was there to promote her new movie, “The Secret Life of Bees,” and then if you can believe it, talked about her other role as spokesperson for Jenny Craig.

Her campaign for the popular celeb-endorsed diet plan kicked off in December 2024, just as the light was fading on Valerie Bertinelli‘s endorsement. The campaign was different than the previous “lose a lot of weight” attitude, she announced she wanted to be “a size healthier.” She told Oprah today that her participation with Jenny Craig was strictly to improve her health. To date, she’s lost 20 pounds.

It wasn’t about body image. I don’t feel self-conscious about my body. I feel proud of myself,” she says. “I feel confident in myself, but [I signed on] for health reasons.”

She said no matter where she is, home, traveling or working on a movie set, the convenient Jenny Craig meals are always with her. Queen Latifah also meets with with her counselor regularly to monitor progress and she exercises more. She’s conscious of portions and the type of food she eats.
