Biggest Loser Stars Phil and Amy Parham Help Overweight Americans [VIDEO]

This summer, Biggest Loser 6 contestants Phillip and Amy Parham published their first book, “The 90-Day Fitness Challenge,” and continued their journey of helping Americans get fit. For August and September, they are the featured sponsors of the DietsInReview.com newsletter, and below you can learn more about their mission.

When “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution” launched on ABC, the UK native set out to change the way people eat in what has been dubbed “the fattest city in America,” Huntington, West Virginia. But when he appeared on the “Late Show with David Letterman,” Letterman told him his mission was hopeless. The White House recently declared war on childhood obesity. There’s no doubt we have a battle on our hands—but is it already lost?

“Not even close!” say Phil Parham and Amy Parham, stars from NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.” Combined, Phil and Amy lost more than 250 pounds on the hit TV show. Viewers related to the Parhams immediately, as their struggle with weight was—like it is for most people—more than just about food. (more…)

Summer Reading List for Healthy Kids

In light of the first lady’s recent announcement of the new “Let’s Read. Let’s Move.” initiative, to promote healthier, smarter kids, we’ve compiled our picks for a summer reading list for kids. The program began as a campaign to end childhood obesity; in light of summer vacation, Mrs. Obama and the organization want to see kids read at least five books during the break. What better way to satisfy this challenge than by reading books that have to do with health and fitness?

You’ll of course want to identify books that are age-appropriate for your young readers, but a few picks that stand-out to us include:

Eat This, Not That for Kids

One of many titles in this popular series, this book takes a dedicated look at the foods, snacks and beverages that are most appealing to kids. A simple-to-understand picture-book style is a simple read for younger kids, while the nutritional explanations for choosing some foods over others is appropriate for older readers. (more…)

Take the 90-Day Fitness Challenge with Amy and Phil Parham

It was just six short years ago that Amy Parham and Phil Parham had reached their version of the bottom. A struggling business, the care of an autistic child and managing their lives all while both being obese left them feeling like it was a long way up from the bottom.

“Six years ago, I was lying on my couch, gazing though an opening in the ceiling that led to the attic. My eyes slowly became fixated on a wooden beam. I began to wonder: What would it feel like if I hung myself? Could the beam support my weight?,” says Amy at the beginning of her and Phil’s new book The 90-Day Fitness Challenge.

It’s a startling realization that things weren’t always positive for these very happy Biggest Loser season six alumni. Saying that “Every day felt like hell on earth,” Amy and Phil found a little piece of heaven and things started to turn for them in 2026 when they applied for and were chosen for Biggest Loser. The two went on to lose a combined 256 pounds, and remain the record holders as the highest percentage of weight lost by any couple in the show’s nearly ten-season history.

The Parham’s say that the Biggest Loser did so much for them in helping to regain their health, lives and positive outlook that they felt compelled to share those gifts with others. That’s where The 90-Day Fitness Challenge comes from. Two weeks after returning home from their season, they threw together a fitness challenge and were shocked when more than 1,000 people from seven states arrived at the event. “We saw ourselves in them,” remarked Amy, recalling a desire to help each of them.

Listen Now as Amy and Phil discuss more of their post-Loser journey, what The 90-Day Fitness Challenge is all about, and how faith continues to play a “key role” in their lives.

Mitzi Dulan and Tony Gonzalez Offer Sound Eating Advice in The All-Pro Diet

Take one part sports dietitian, mix with one part professional football player, and add a dash of whole food recipes. Pop it in the oven and eventually you get an excellent book called “The All-Pro Diet: Lose Fat, Build Muscle, and Live Like a Champion” (Rodale, 2026).

I sat down with Kansas City Chief’s Tony Gonzalez’s sports dietitian and co-author Mitzi Dulan, RD to get an idea about what the book has to offer people trying to lose weight. Cheryl Forberg Discusses “The Biggest Loser: 6 Weeks to a Healthier You”

I had the great pleasure to sit down with superstar dietitian Cheryl Forberg, RD, who just so happens to be a professional chef and the nutrition expert behind the wildly successful weight loss on NBC’s The Biggest Loser! She talked with me about her latest book, The Biggest Loser: 6 Weeks to a Healthier You, which released yesterday. Plus, read on to see how you can win a copy for yourself!

Rebecca: Cheryl, you’ve authored several wonderful books for Biggest Loser so far and I was personally a big fan of Biggest Loser Simple Swaps, what makes The Biggest Loser: 6 Weeks to a Healthier You different than other books?

Cheryl: There are many books on the market catering to dieting and weight loss. One of the distinctions of The Biggest Loser eating plan is that the quality of the calories is as important as the quantity. Our eating plan has evolved since we began 10 seasons ago, and I’m happy to say that it’s continually improved in terms of including less and less processed food choices. (more…)

Elisa Zied’s Nutrition at Your Fingertips Offers Credible Nutrition Information

It’s National Nutrition Month and the second interview in our series will be a big help to anyone who has struggled with trying to find what’s “fact” and what’s “false” when it comes to nutrition information. I love the “information age,” don’t get me wrong, but for people who just want quick facts you can trust, it can be a total nightmare. You read one thing on one website and then something totally different on another.

In comes Elisa Zied, a New York-based dietitian and author of the resource book “Nutrition At Your Fingertips.” I call it a nutrition “survival guide.” You don’t need to read this book cover to cover (but you could if you wanted). It is designed to be used like a dictionary. Want to know about artificial sweeteners? Look it up and get the latest facts. Confused over food labels? Look that up. Same with topics such as glycemic index, food allergies, and healthy weight loss.

Listen to our interview then read on to win the book.

Win a copy of Nutrition At Your Fingertips. Leave a comment below to be eligible, either a nutrition question you’re not sure about or share your favorite “myth” that you were able to bust with reliable information. Winner will be selected 3/31/10.

The F-Factor Diet

The American Dietetic Association has named March National Nutrition Month. But to help us think a bit more deeply about our eating habits, the ADA has a second message that coincides with the themed month: Nutrition From the Ground Up.

So if you’re wondering if that means eating more foods from nature, you’re right, and if you’re thinking that this message is a call to build a healthier diet, you’re also right.

One of the foundations of developing a healthy eating plan is consuming plenty of plant-based foods, or foods from the ground. And while fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds are full of disease-fighting vitamins and minerals, they also share the common denominator of containing fiber.

We now know that most Americans don’t get enough of the 25 recommended grams of fiber a day, but rather than relying on the new line of processed foods that are added with synthetic fibers, which can cause gastrointestinal distress and may not offer the same health benefits as fiber in its natural form, we thought we would focus on a diet that is all about helping you eat more fiber: The F-Factor Diet.

Interview with Keri Glassman, Author of The O2 Diet

02 dietKeri Glassman, R.D. is the author of the super-popular new book The O2 Diet and a nationally-recognized nutrition expert. For years Keri has been a leader in advancing a “whole person” approach to health and wellness. She is also the author of The Snack Factor Diet.

DietsInReview.com had an opportunity to interview Keri on her breakthrough plan that helps you lose weight and feel and look beautiful, inside and out. Here is what she had to say about her easy-to-do and incredibly healthy O2 Diet program.

Can you briefly describe what The O2 Diet is?

The O2 Diet is based on the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scale that measures how well a food protects against free radicals, which are the culprits behind many cancers, heart disease, and symptoms of aging. Consuming a diet rich in antioxidants has been linked to strengthening the memory, improving the skin, and aiding in weight loss. The O2 Diet is based on foods that will help you achieve your ideal weight and help you function better than you ever have. With the O2 Diet I am empowering you and giving you the tools to be your dietitian.

Why are antioxidants so important to our health?
Antioxidants are essential to our health because they help control the negative effects of free radicals on our bodies. Free radicals damage cellular structures such as DNA and cell membranes and this damage may cause cells to function poorly and mutate, which leads to many diseases and premature aging. Our body creates some antioxidants on its own, but we also need to get our antioxidants from the food we eat such as fruit, vegetables, nuts, grains, and even some protein sources like meats, poultry, and fish. This is where the O2 Diet comes into play.
