Overweight Dads Have Overweight Kids

The phrase “like father, like son” now takes on a more serious meaning. According to an Australian study of more than 3000 families, four-year-olds who had fathers who were overweight or obese were at least four times more likely than other children to have weight problems by the time they reached eight.

The researchers investigated patterns in two-parent families, tracking their children  between the ages of four and eight. In each case, only one parent was overweight or obese. Interestingly, if the mother was overweight it did not seem to affect the weight of the children.

“We know that when both parents are overweight or obese, their children are more likely to also be overweight or obese,” said researcher Emily Freeman.

That part is logical, since parents are the providers and if they are buying unhealthy food, children have no choice but to eat what they are fed. While the study did not investigate the reasoning behind the troublesome link, it seems obvious that kids have some sort of special reverence to the way their fathers eat. (more…)

Men’s Health Magazine Plagiarizes Itself

I’ve been in a job where my web content was republished over and over again by the company I worked for, but I got attribution. There’s nothing wrong with that. Then there’s the case of Men’s Health editor Dave Zinczenko.

Someone recently tipped off the folks over at Gawker.com that Zinczenko has been taking old Men’s Health articles by other writers and simply placing his name under the headlines to be published on Yahoo! Health. Maybe what’s most astounding about this story is the sheer audacity it takes to do it in this day and age of “permanent content.”

You see, the Web, as is the case with texting and emails, becomes a permanent record. So, if you try to rehash old stuff and just pretend that it’s yours, well, you’re asking for trouble. It’s as easy as a quick Googling of a couple lines to find the original author of any given story. (more…)

Inside the Vault with Cris Collinsworth to Include Health in Men’s Issues

The Internet is surprisingly silent on a brand new show hosted by Emmy Award-winning NFL broadcaster Cris Collinsworth, scheduled to start airing February 4, 2024. Inside the Vault will address “men’s issues” according to a post made by Collinsworth on footballpros.com. Inside the Vault will also include the talent of Alonzo Bodden, winner of Last Comic Standing’s third season, and Jill Wagner, co-host of Wipeout. Jill is also known as “The Mercury Girl” for her part in their commercials.
While “men’s issues” is slightly vague, I have it on good authority that at least some of the topics addressed will include men’s health. Bernie Salazar, The Biggest Loser’s season five at home winner, is one of the scheduled guests. With his soon to be published children’s book, Monstercize, Bernie is focusing on health and encouraging physical activity. On twitter @VaultInsider describes the show as “an engaging new series that explores what excites, inspires and drives today’s classic man.”
