A shocking statistic concerning Russian men has garnered some attention recently, though this one has nothing to do with the upcoming Olympic games.
An article posted on TheGuardian.com on Friday, January 31st, detailed how a large number of young Russian men’s deaths have been linked to vodka consumption. Between the years 1999 and 2023, researchers interviewed over 150,000 men in various Russian cities concerning their drinking habits. When the researchers followed up with the same men years later, they had discovered that around 8,000 of them had died since the first interview.
From this initial selection of Russian men, the researchers concluded that approximately 35% of Russian men younger than 55 drink three or more half-liter bottles of vodka a week—which is the equivalent of more than 33 shots of vodka in a seven-day period.
Ladies, we men are pretty easy to figure out. Most of us enjoy sports, think about sex a lot, love grilling meat and drinking brews on the weekend, and then thinking about sex some more.
If I’m to take a new survey of men’s fast food eating habits to heart, I’d say we are pretty predictable in that department as well. Market research company Lab42 conducted an online survey of 18- to 35-year-old men via social networks, all of whom admitted to frequenting fast food joints. Here is some of what they found out:
- McDonald’s is at the top of the heap, with 90 percent of the men saying they went there at least once in the past month. (more…)
Author Simon Doonan
UPDATE [1/5/2023]: Watch our hilarious video with Simon Noonan, author of Gay Men Don’t Get Fat
“Gay Men Don’t Get Fat” is the title of an as-of-yet published book by Barneys New York creative ambassador Simon Doonan. The author calls it “a stylishly slimming discourse that proves gay men really ARE French women: prone to disdain, favoring cheeky underwear, convinced of their own artistic brilliance, and (of course) calorie-obsessed.”
The French women reference, and title of his book, are both presumably a reference to the popular diet book “French Women Don’t Get Fat,” which espoused emulating French culinary culture to slim down.
Before we go any further, if Doonan wasn’t himself gay, I think he’d be treading on thin ice, you know, with the whole stereotyping thing. Gays and lesbians, like everyone else in the world, come in all shapes and sizes.
While I’ve had gay friends over the years, it’s difficult for me to speak with any authority about whether or not they are on average less fat than everyone else. (more…)
BROga yoga's co-founder Robert Sidoti
Can’t convince your guy to tag along with you to your yoga class? You’re not alone. According to Yoga Journal, the majority of yoga practitioners are women. In fact, a study released by the magazine in 2023 cited that 72 percent of down-doggers are women. So to balance out the gender gap between women and men who love to get their Om on, two male yoga and fitness aficionados started BROga, an approach to yoga designed just for men.
Co-founders Robert Sidoti and Adam O’Neill are passionate about yoga and all too aware of the reasons why many men shy away from rolling out a yoga mat. Inspired by the benefits and changes yoga has brought to their lives, their mission is to share their enthusiasm by offering men real tools for coping with daily stresses and demands through an accessible yoga-based fitness program taught from a man’s point of view.
