Ed Sheeran’s Vodka Diet Helps Him Shed 35 Pounds in 3 Months

While one star this week cited giving up vodka for his impressive weight loss (see Zach Galifianakis’ before and after), Ed Sheeran credits the Russian booze for helping him shed 35 pounds.

The English singer-songwriter said, “I have dropped like 35 pounds in three months just from not drinking beer. I have replaced it with vodka.”

We’re not sure how that would work exactly, and the comment even has our Mary Hartley, RD scratching her head.

“I just doubt that he replaced beer calories with an equal number vodka,” she told us. “A six pack is replaced with one pint of vodka. Do you think he drank a pint (16-ounces) of vodka a day?”

Well, just looking at him, we’re going take a stab that, no, Sheeran wasn’t downing a pint of vodka a day. What does a beer to vodka comparison really look like?

In a 12-ounce bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale (a bloody right English beer) there are 138 calories. The same 12-ounces of 80 proof vodka has 770 calories!

If he did make a swap from beer to vodka, we’re going to guess his consumption went down significantly. But as Sheeran and Hartley both pointed out — the bottle wasn’t the only thing helping him lose weight. (more…)

WHOA! Zach Galifianakis Gets Sober, Loses Weight, and Looks Better Than Ever

When you work in Hollywood, having your weight scrutinized by the tabloids is a given. Men are typically under less pressure. And comedians? It’s almost seen as a bonus if they’re at least slightly overweight.

5 Overweight Entertainers Who Died Too Soon

So when funny man Zach Galifianakis stepped out in public for the first time in many months looking more like his blue-eyed Hangover co-star Bradley Cooper and less like, well, Zach Galifianakis, many were shocked.

Now many are wondering, how did he do it? In typical Zach Galifianakis fashion, his explanation has an element of humor.

I stopped drinking and I just kind of put the weight off…I was having a lot of vodka with sausage…delicious but bad for you.” (more…)

Jennifer Lawrence Bashes Gwyneth’s Gluten-Free Eating Disorder; Ed Sheeran’s Vodka Diet

When Celebrity Diets are No More Than an Eating Disorder

Leave it to Jennifer Lawrence to keep it almost too real. This time, the Hunger Games and X-Men actress is making headlines for sharing her not-so-flattering opinion of Gwyneth Paltrow’s gluten-free diet.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Lawrence called the Gwyneth’s diet choice “the cool new eating disorder,” describing it as “I just don’t eat carbs.”

Those are pretty harsh words for a diet that’s purportedly followed for medical reasons.

“It doesn’t follow that gluten-free dieters are then eating disordered. Many people have aberrant eating patterns but don’t meet the diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder,” explained our resident nutrition expert, Mary Hartley, RD.

In her new book, It’s All Good, Paltrow wrote, “Every single nutritionist, doctor and health-conscious person I have ever come across…seems to concur that (gluten) is tough on the system and many of us are at best intolerant of it and at worst allergic to it.”

While gluten intolerance may be a real medical issue for Paltrow and her family, Lawrence wasn’t entirely in the wrong for labeling gluten-free eating as the latest “it” starvation diet. (more…)

2 Bloody Good Summer Brunch Cocktails: Blood Orange Mimosa and Bloody Rosemary

It’s 5:00 somewhere has got to be the best excuse in the book to grab a drink. As I write this, it’s 5:20pm in Lisbon, Portugal. By that math I could have a wine with lunch. But people would scowl and wonder if I had a problem.

And I don’t. Really.

Fortunately, brunch has made it acceptable to start your day drinking a wee bit earlier than lunch and way earlier than 5:00. The happy hour rises at dawn with mimosas, bloody marys, and bellinis! They really can be the perfect complement to a late-morning meal of fresh asparagus and prosciutto crepes or hearty frittatas.

We’ve made over two of our favorite brunch cocktails – the mimosa and the bloody mary. They use whole, fresh ingredients rather than junky mixers and have inspired new tastes on standard classics.

blood orange mimosa

The Blood Orange Mimosa uses three ingredients: Splashes of champagne, blood orange juice, and a hint of fresh basil. Your guests will be toasting you for this delightful addition to brunch. Prettier, sweeter, and possibly more refreshing than a basic OJ mimosa, this one is as charming as it is delicious. (more…)

The Diet Booze Trend Continues with Fergie’s Endorsement of Voli Vodka

Fun-loving Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas is not only the perfect party guest because she always knows which song to spin next, but she’s also got the inside skinny on the best cocktails. She’s the face of Voli Vodka, a line of lower calorie flavored vodkas. She told Chelsea Handler this fall that her daily vodka consumption varies by the week, saying, “If I have one drink a day, I feel better the next day than if I don’t drink at all. I’m just gonna start drinking daily.”

She’s clearly fit, firm and fabulous (Fergalicious to be exact), so how does she do it if she’s swilling vodka on a daily basis? Certainly her 4-6 workouts in the gym every week, but she’ll also tell you it’s because she’s not drinking just any vodka. She’s drinking Voli Vodka, which has 74 calories per shot. A standard shot of vodka has about 100 calories.

Sure, 26 calories is a fair savings when you’re drinking one cocktail or a few, especially daily. But does it really matter when they are still nutritionally void, empty calories? Bonnie Taub-Dix, MA, RD, CDN, author of Read It Before You Eat It and nutrition expert in NY, says not so much.

“My take on this is that many people think that if you don’t chew — it doesn’t count — and that’s simply not true.” Those calories most certainly still count, and maybe more than most because they’re typically accompanied by a lot of sugar – like juice and other mixers.

We showed Bonnie the Fergatini, Voli’s branded version of a Cape Cod, with Voli Lyte, Fresh Lime Juice, and Cranberry Juice.

“Think about it — in this cocktail of 82 calories — only 1-1/2 oz or 1 jigger of vodka is used. How many of us pour just one shot?,” she asked. “That won’t happen at a friend’s party! It also only includes one ounce of juice. That rarely happens too because many of the calories in alcohol are contributed by the mixers.” (more…)
