Author Mireille Guiliano wants to take you on a European vacation. Destination: France. In her eyes, American women should mirror the lifestyle of their French counterparts. By integrating the highly-effective French habits, you can cutout the frustrating tasks of counting calories, watching carbs or other extremes.
With the ratio of overweight or obese people in America being one in three, she says there is something to be learned from the French. The method is simple, common sense and best of all, it works. By increasing the fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs in your diet, eating just three meals a day, avoiding oversized portions, drinking more water and
introducing more physical activity every day, you'll still be able to reward yourself with your favorite treats from time to time. Just look at the French women who manage to maintain ideal figures in the face of a traditional diet that, rather ironically, includes cream, butter, cheeses and meat.
Followers of Guiliano's diet are encouraged to eat for pleasure. Consuming only foods that you enjoy will help satisfy your hunger. She also suggests avoiding the scale and monitoring your weight according to your zipper. When it becomes a challenge to close your pants, you should re-examine your lifestyle and eating habits.
Enjoy your meals one bite at a time and don't feel like you're in a race to finish. Remember less is more - avoid overeating by stopping at the point you are satisfied. By eating with your head, you'll be able to leave the table feeling comfortable.
Academy Award-winning actress Hilary Swank bought the movie rights in 2008 to adapt the book to film.

+I read this book a few years ago but knowing and doing are two different things. Now I've been in and out of the hospital and now have been told that I need to loose just over 100 lbs to be healthy. The kicker is I am French and now I think is the time to live up to the image through the knowledge of my ancestors! So wish me luck!!!

I think this is very much the way they eat in Italy as well. How else do you explain pasta, wine, gorgonzola and tiramisu? I love this approach - I am going to start following it. TODAY

Dr Amanda's Don't Go Hungry Diet is much better and is scientific too. It shows how to lose weight without being hungry supported with scientific research.

I have done this "diet" for six weeks and have lost 15 pounds. I feel like a lot of this is common sense, but she made me think about food in a new way. I did start walking every day, which is probably a huge part of weight loss, but I also started eating half what I was eating, and enjoying it more. I wouldn't call this a diet. I would call it a food awareness plan. I did buy a yogurt strainer, which turns ordinary yogurt into a great breakfast. I started eating things like sauteed spinich (which I really like and know is low calorie) paired with good bread and a piece of excellent cheese. A great dinner that I wouldn't have considered until I read this book.

She gives maybe a common knowledge, but in a way that I wanted to try this. I sat down with my breakfast and tried to really taste it, the same with other meals. She encouraged me to do so!!!! I search for recipes, for new flavours. I am currently on the first 3-week programm - observation.

This is all common knowledge, or should be. Everyone knows you can eat what you want if you control the portions, but most people can't control themselves so they stick to eating bland diet food.

Brianna - yuou are so right, French women do look fabulous. This diet has really helped me and my family slow down our eating and enjoy our time around the table!

If you think about it- she's got a point - French women do look pretty fabulous! Sounds like you just need to think before you eat- she's pointing out stuff we've all been hearing for years- eat smaller servings, drink water, exercise. This is the kind of diet you could trick your husband into following too! :)

I love Mireille! She is so great and lives the ultimate lifestyle! I love her concept of the first and second bite are the best and why do you need more. You can really eat anything you want just don't over do it! Live like the French slim and beautiful, wine and cheese who can beat it.
