Dr. Alejandro Junger's "Clean" detox book outlines a complete detox program, which has received the praises of mega star Gwyneth Paltrow. Unlike most fasts, which contain very sparse diets, Clean actually allows you to eat focusing on foods that are plant-based, whole and organic.

This 3-week detox program is designed to ease digestion by providing two liquid meals a day and a solid one in between, eliminating allergenic and mucus-forming food, which frees up even more energy. In addition, yoga, breath work, exercise and the daily ingestion of olive oil to maintain the health of the liver is also recommended.

Dr. Junger is a Uruguayan-born, New York City internal medicine doctor where he practices at the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center is also designing an Integrative Medicine Service at Lenox Hill Hospital, for which he was asked to be the Director of Integrative Medicine.

The Clean detox program is a well-outlined three week plan in which what to eat and when to eat are clearly explained in Dr. Junger's book. Two liquid meals and one solid-food meal are allowed each day in addition to drinking tea and water. Alcohol, dairy, sugar, caffeine, red meat, processed foods, flour, gluten and soy are not allowed.

Here is a sample day on the Clean detox program:

  • 7 am: One glass of room temperature water with fresh lemon juice.
  • 8 am: Herbal tea
  • 10 am: Blueberry and Almond Smoothie or Mango and Coconut Milk smoothie
  • 11:30 am: Coconut water (not milk)
  • 1:30 pm: Watercress and miso soup or salad with carrot and ginger dressing
  • 4 pm: Handful of almonds or raw pumpkin seeds
  • 6 pm: Steamed salmon with steamed greens or detox Teriyaki chicken

In addition, each evening a few spoonfuls of extra virgin olive oil are recommended to improve the circulation of the liver. If constipation occurs, castor oil or an herbal laxative tea can be taken.

EXERCISEEXERCISE

The Clean detox diet suggests that you engage in gentle yoga and breath work every day in addition to some sort of sweating exercise in order to get rid of toxins. A sauna can also be done.

Since the detox program allows you to eat food and at regular intervals, you will have enough energy, if not more, to maintain your current fitness schedule.

Focusing on fresh and plant-based foods, this cleansing program is likely to drop a few pounds from your frame and leave you feeling healthier all around. Just keep in mind that weight loss is likely to be regained once regular eating habits ensue.

I followed the program beginning early July, 2013. I lost a total of 32 lbs in approx. 2 months, but more importantly, my blood pressure and cholesterol levels dropped dramatically and painful joints cleared up. What I really gained from the program was learning how to eliminate certain foods that I found I was sensitive to. Belly bloat disappeared. I have been eating according to "clean" principles ever since and am still way healthier than I was prior to 2013.

I felt last time I was on this diet. I have not stuck with it, but I am reading up on it again and will be starting up again. It really is about changing your lifestyle for the better.

I have never done a cleanse or watched my diet too carefully. Did this and lost my wheat belly ( 17 lbs in 14 days ) It is very low on calories, so I think you have to gentle start a week before changing your diet before you go all in. Also we did the water and shake first thing to keep the hunger pains away. I went from over 14,000 calories a day to under 900. I was only a little over weight but for men it goes right after your gut/ belly. it tough but good

I have been on this "diet" for not only 3 weeks, but a further 6 months. The first 3 days I didn't feel great, but from the 4th day on...incredible. My blood sugar stabilized, I lost weight, my sinuses cleared up, and since I have many food allergies, the good news was that I have had no itching or other allergic reactions since I've been on this. I've already gotten my family doctor interested in this, I've already told him that I will probably be on it for the rest of my life as I feel so well.

I loved this "diet". In all the time that I was on it, I never itched or have any other allergic reactions, which is a first for me. Not only did I do the entire 3 weeka, but I'm still on it 6 months later. My blood sugar stabilized, my weight went down and my sinuses cleared.

This diet was bit difficult at first with an increase in my migraines, which is why i decided to do it. I also did the elimination diet for 10 full days before I started. But now that I am finished i have more energy and my GI system feels fantastic. I was not hungry on it most of the time and a small snack of seeds, nuts or raw fruit or veggies really helped in the instances. I plan on eating a liquid meal permanently for dinner a few times per week because not going to bed with a lot of food in my stomach really helped me sleep better! I did not buy the Clean kit and made all of my own food. I order my supplements from Swanson and found everything I needed there at a great price. I did this cleanse under the care of an MD. I will do this cleanse again.

I began having severe breathing problems with this product, specifically the clean essentials vitamins. I know specifically it was the vitamins because I have a very active lifestyle (cycling, running marathons, etc) and all of that came to a halt about 4 days after taking the vitamins. I didn't realize it was the vitamins until after seeing a doctor who diagnosed me with pleurisy (a potential lung infection) and asked that I stop all supplements etc until they could figure out what was causing it. As soon as I stopped the vitamins, the side effects disappeared completely. I haven't had a problem since and am back to my normal routine. Be careful when taking this. If you suddenly feel tightness in your chest/lungs, stop taking them.
