Those preparing for surgery will typically be placed on a specific diet to lose weight. The amount of time you are on the diet will vary depending on how much weight you need to lose and the type of surgery you are going to have. Some of the common diets for weight-loss surgery patients include the fatty liver reduction, Optifast liquid diet, the protein-sparing modified fast, a low-calorie diet, a specialized liquid diet or an intragastric balloon diet. There are menus laid out for each of those diets in the book. Many of the diets can also use recipes within the book for added help. Below is a sample day of eating on the low-calorie diet meal plan.

Stage 3.2 also lasts for one week, and advances you to well-cooked soft vegetables and soft or peeled ripe fruit. Stage 3.3 is the final limited one week stage. This allows you to add in cereals, pita bread and wraps. You must still avoid pasta and bread until you can tolerate at least 60 grams of protein per day. The last stage of the diet is stage four. During this phase you continue to introduce a variety of acceptable foods from all food groups as your body can tolerate them.

Your first level of activity will be walking very slowly after your blood pressure is stable the first day after your surgery. Of course this will be supervised by your doctor and will not be allowed until you are ready. You should gradually increase the length of your walk each time. You can start with five minutes three times per week.
