How do you dice an onion?

Surely if you're cutting an onion's skin off, you're down to the point where it's now clean, as the inner layers have not been exposed up to that point.

Points lost for washing onion, then using the 'dirty' knife you just used to remove the outer layer and move the skins to the bin, to cut the onion...
