Rick Perry's Position on Health Care

2012 Presidential Candidate Positions on Health Care

Rick Perry is the current governor of Texas, a position he has held since 2000 when George W. Bush resigned to become President.

Perry has been a vocal opponent to President Obama's 2009 health care reform bills. As governor of Texas, he passed a tort reform bill the capped the non-economic damages in medical malpractice cases. He generally opposes government-run health care programs. Under Perry's governorship, Texas became the state with the highest percentage of uninsured residents.

Individual Issues:

  • Supports the repeal of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
  • Wants put more control of health care into the hands of the states
  • Wants to expand tort reform
  • Medicaid should have block-grants so that states can find their own solutions
