Food Label Glossary

Not defined. (Seriously, it’s not.) Now if you are done laughing or gasping (and you should be doing one of the two), the FDA states that the sugars amount includes sugars that are present naturally in the food such as lactose in milk, fructose in fruit and sucrose in fruits and vegetables, as well as sugars added to the food during processing, such as sugar/sucrose, corn syrup, honey, high fructose corn syrup, fruit juice concentrates and dextrose. This essentially means you can’t tell by looking at the label if the sugar occurs naturally like in milk and fruit. You need to read the ingredients list. Also beware that if a serving contains less than 0.5 grams of sugars, the weight can be expressed as zero on the label.
