The Air Diet

Worst Diets of All Time

The air diet is exactly what it sounds like: a diet of eating nothing. In fact, you just pretend to eat. The diet emerged from France, where it's called "L'air Fooding," and was made popular by celebrities like Madonna and designers like Dolce & Gabbana. A warning to non-francophones: anything involved with the word "fooding" means it's trendy, or in other words, a fad.

This pro-anorexia diet suggests that you can experience food by holding it near your mouth and pretending to chew. The only thing followers of the air diet are permitted to actually eat is "soup à l'eau" or water soup, that contains little more than salt. The air diet is essentially promoting anorexia, and has no health benefits whatsoever.

My grandmother tried the tapeworm diet years ago, but concluded that it must have died. So she took up smoking to lose weight. Which is consistent with what all these schemes are selling: ill health to the naive. I agree, incidentally, great column!!

Thanks for all the info - the only one I've ever really tried (with my sister) was the grapefruit diet in the 60's. It just got too boring, even with the addition of Tab and Fresca. Oh well, the struggle goes on! Love your column.
