I used to have this strange fascination with celebrity news. Or more accurately, strange obsession.
One of my favorite things to do in college was go to Barnes and Noble, grab an americano and a stack of magazines and drink up the fashion choices, eating habits and trivial doings of my favorite celebrities. It wasn’t until years later that I realized this wasn’t a productive use of my time and stopped. But I still can’t help spying the headlines when I’m at the grocery store just to make sure I’m not missing anything.
One of my most-loved celebrities? Alicia Silverstone. Can we say ‘Clueless’? That movie changed my life in the 6th grade. I was wearing plaid skirts and knee highs for years after the fact. So when I saw her name in the headlines this morning, I had to investigate.
The story? Alicia – author of ‘The Kind Diet’ – posted a video to her Kind Life blog of her feeding 11-month-old son, Bear Blu, mouth-to-mouth, mother-bird style.

On her blog, Alicia says, “I fed Bear the mochi and a tiny bit of veggies from the soup…from my mouth to his. It’s his favorite…and mine. He literally crawls across the room to attack my mouth if I’m eating.”
I hate to be critical, but really? When did regurgitation become an acceptable practice among humans? Now I will admit, it is a bit endearing to see Alicia have such a close and intimate connection with her son. But was posting a video of her spitting chewed food into her son’s mouth necessary? I err on the side of no.
It’s stories like this and so many others – like January Jones ingesting her own placenta – that leave me wondering why we care so much about what celebrities are doing in the first place. Sure, it makes good news and turns a few heads. But I would sincerely hope people aren’t actually following the example of celebrities without first questioning their choices.
Personally? I have plenty of good examples in my life that would gladly offer me advice on health, motherhood, and exercise any time I asked. And honestly, they’re a much more credible source than most celebrities today. This leaves me with little excuse for needing to know what’s going on in the celebrity realm.
On the other hand, one celebrity fashion icon I will forever blindly follow? Sarah Jessica Parker. I love everything that woman puts on. But if she posts some bizarre home video on her blog anytime the near future, she’ll be on my naughty list, too.
