Redditors got a larger than life surprise while casually scrolling through the fitness feeds today. Celebrities aren’t uncommon on the social site, as their “Ask Me Anything” threads are incredibly popular, but it was a shock to see former California governor and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger show up to chastise the bickering and defend that everyone gets fit differently.
The hubbub started when a Reddit user posted a link to a cardio workout developed by fitness site Fitocracy. The 15 minute workout—aptly dubbed “the best cardio routine humanly possible“—was released in conjunction with The Governator’s 1% Challenge, a crusade that encourages people to devote one percent of their day to fitness. After the posting, hordes of Reddit users did what Reddit users d0: verbally spar in the comment section.
The arguing centered on whether or not the ex-world champion bodybuilder’s workout really was the best cardio routine humanly possible. The regimen, developed by Dr. Layne Norton, basically involves moderate stationary biking with periods of strenuous biking at maximum resistance. This cycling routine burns fat while building muscle, and apparently it’s so intense that many people puke while attempting it. Reddit began to explode with droves of “fitness experts” offering their two cents.
That’s when the old Austrian Oak stepped in, and it turns out he commands as much respect from internet trolls as he does pipsqueaks in the gym.
“Everybody, behave and stop bickering,” said The Arnold. “This is about inspiring more people to get into fitness. I’ve never understood people who argue constantly about who is wrong and who is right in fitness, because the fact is, there are many ‘right’ answers, especially for people just starting out.”
Arnie had officially won the internet. All of the bickering ceased and Redditors began to proverbially bow down in awe. Many users nominated him to be an honorary moderator of the site. Others played it safe and made puns like, “Come with me if you want to lift,” and “Kindergarten Cop: Online.”
Mr. Schwarzenegger went on to admit his favorite type of cardio used to be running on the beach, and now it’s biking through Santa Monica and Venice. Sounds rough. But Arnold’s a busy man, and he couldn’t stay long, so he wrapped up his remarks with a respectful request:
“Do me a favor. Try to focus more on expanding the fitness community as a whole [rather] than protecting your little corner of it.” And off to the chopper he went.
