One of my favorite, low-impact aerobic activities is walking. It can be done almost anywhere – indoors or out – and doesn’t require fancy, expensive equipment. All you need is a good pair of sneakers or walking shoes, water and some motivation to get out the door. It would also be good to invest in a few inexpensive items of clothing made of lightweight, wicking material, which help keep moisture away from your body.

Walking for at least one hour a day will give you the most benefit. The health benefits of walking include weight loss, overall body toning and a reduced risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Walking also helps clear the mind. During walks I contemplate my life, solve problems and daydream. Walking even sparks my creativity.

Walk in well-lit areas or with a buddy if it makes you feel more comfortable. If you walk in the dark be sure to wear some kind of reflective clothing or vest for safety. You can also wear a pedometer and aim for more than 10,000 steps per day. Just be careful so it doesn’t fall in the toilet. This has happened to a friend of mine and almost happened to me!

I challenge you to get moving and get healthy. Walking makes it easy.
