The Best Hangover Cure

While you shouldn’t get plastered in the first place, we all know that New Year’s Eve is one of those occasions where many of us will overindulge. That means many of us will also start 2024 groggy and out of it.

There have been many hangover cures touted over the years, with most of them being mere quackery. Some swear by greasy food like a sausage and egg biscuit, or just grab some coffee.

According to scientists, the best option (besides just waiting it out and drinking water) is toast and a healthy scoop of honey. Hangovers happen when the body converts alcohol into the toxic chemical called acetaldehyde, but the fructose in honey helps the body break down alcohol into a harmless byproduct. Toast adds potassium and sodium, which apparently also help.

We Love Alexia Spicy Sweet Potato Fries

As if keeping your dinner entrees interesting wasn’t task enough, what about the side dishes? It’s easy to fall in to a culinary rut, no matter how much you do or don’t like cooking. Personally, I love cooking. I don’t think it’s stressful to make dinner, I actually enjoy it. And while a lot of people like taking short-cuts, like buying pre-chopped vegetables or pre-shredded cheese, I enjoy taking on each of those steps in the preparation. But like everyone else, I too seem to serve the same roasted veggies and salad all. the. time.

When I stumbled upon the Alexia food products in my grocer’s natural food section, I hemmed and hawed over whether to even buy them. I bypassed everything that I know I could easily make myself, and took home a bag of the Alexia Spicy Sweet Potato Fries. Why? Because 1) side dishes get monotonous at my house and we needed something new, and 2) I’ve yet to conquer the sweet potato fry. Mine come out limp, wilty and nothing more than a chunk of mushy sweet potato. (more…)

We Love Wholly Guacamole

There’s something about Mexican food that makes people want to gather together and turn any ordinary afternoon or evening in to a celebration for nothing in particular. The center of these gatherings being chips, guacamole and salsa. Now, these snacks can be high in calories and fat and just one more empty calorie fiesta. The best way to handle this is to prepare it yourself, but not everyone has the time (or even the money) to make a fresh batch of salsa or guacamole on demand. Eat, I mean meet, the next best thing – Wholly Guacamole!

You might think any ‘ole guacamole from the store will be fine, but an article at Yahoo! this week by Men’s Health editor David Zinczenko revealed that those premade guacamoles aren’t actually made with avocados. In fact, their ingredient labels show less than two-percent avocado with the rest being “green goo [and] a cluster of fillers and chemicals, including modified food starch, soybean oils, locust bean gum, and food coloring.”

Wholly guacamole starts with fresh Haas avocados, then adds onion, garlic, tomatoes, jalapenos and cilantro for a flavorful, fresh snack that can’t be beat by other grocery brands. (more…)

Food Safety Protester Jailed in China

For those of you who worry about government overreach in the food industry, let’s consider the opposite possibility: You could live in China.

Take the case of Zhao Lianhai, whose child was one of 300,000 Chinese citizens who got sick from tainted milk in 2024. After assembling with other victims of the food safety debacle to protest for compensation, Lianhai was arrested last December and sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

Olivier De Schutter, the UN special rapporteur on the right to food, says he has raised Lianhai’s case with Chinese government officials.

“I think the freedom of expression, and freedom of association such as those that Mr. Zhao was exercising are key to protecting social and economic rights such as right to food,” said De Schutter.

He rightly fears the effects of crackdowns on people who raise concerns over food safety. The most obvious worry is that people will do nothing about their concerns in fear of spending time in prison, possibly leaving millions in peril. (more…)

RECALL: Alfalfa Sprouts, Cilantro and Parsley

Cilantro leavesTwo apparently separate outbreaks of salmonella have prompted recalls of alfalfa sprouts, cilantro and parsley.

The FDA says the contaminated alfalfa sprouts have been traced to Tiny Greens Organic Farm, which sold the vegetables in four-ounce and five-pound containers to farmer’s markets and grocery stores. They also sell sprouts to restaurants, including the sandwich chain Jimmy John’s. The sprouts have made 94 people ill in 16 states, but no deaths have been linked to the outbreak.
