Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities

There are many ethical, environmental and personal reasons why an individual will choose a vegetarian diet, and it is gaining popularity for these reasons. In September 2005, the American Journal of Medicine released a study of participants showing that a low-fat, plant-based diet is more effective at helping people lose weight and improve insulin-sensitivity than an omnivorous diet of meat and plants. However, a vegetarian diet must be followed correctly or else the individual runs the risk of gaining weight if all they are doing is eating pasta, cheese and potato chips.

Hollywood is full of vegetarians and vegans, those who don’t consume animal products in any form. Actresses Alyssa Milano, Ashley Greene, and rock star Anthony Kiedis are all vegans. If followed correctly, you will likely experience improvements in your health on a vegan diet, and maybe knock off a few pounds too.

From Kellie Pickler to Omar Epps, we’ve rounded up the sexiest vegetarian celebrities and taken a look at their reasons for going meat-free.

Celebrate National Ice Cream Day

Today, July 19, was designated National Ice Cream Day in 1984 by President Ronald Regan. This was in conjunction with the  month of July having been designated as National Ice Cream month.

In the proclamation, Reagan recognized the popularity of ice cream in the United States (90 percent of the nation’s population consumes ice cream) and stated that these two events should be observed with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.”

Appropriate “ceremonies and activities,” however, doesn’t mean that you should eat an entire pint of Ben and Jerry’s Chubby Hubby. With more than 1,300 calories and 80 grams of fat, that activity would be a dietary bomb. Instead, why not treat yourself to one of these more diet-friendly choices: (more…)

When was the last time you went to the grocery store and your bill was less than expected? With less money coming in and costs rising, it’s tough to cut corners, especially when it comes to food and nutrition.

But despite those factors, there are ways to eat cheaper, healthier and save a few dollars here and there. It may take a little thinking out of the box, but the payoff can be worth it.

There are definitely some tricks when making that next trip to the grocery store. Follow these tips to help stretch out those dollars:

The Dangers of Phentermine

The FDA just rejected the prescription weight loss drug, Qnexa, because of its potential for adverse cardiovascular effects. While weight loss drugs are fraught with health risks, in regards to Qnexa, the finger points to the drug’s main ingredient, phentermine.

Phentermine is a kind of amphetamine that stimulates the nervous system, and increases heart rate and blood pressure. It is often used in diet pills because it suppresses appetite. Brand names of phentermine are Adipex-P, Obenix, Oby-Trim.

You might remember a weight loss drug called Fen-Phen. This dangerous diet pill was yanked from the market by the FDA in 1997 because of its association with serious cardiovascular problems. Phentermine was the “Phen” in Fen-Phen. Along with fenfluramine (“Fen”), the duo of ingredients was linked to heart and pulmonary emergencies, many of which resulted in death.

Bret Michaels Makes Diet Snapple Drink

Like Joanna O’Leary over at The Houston Press, I was never a fan of Poison… even in my ’80s metal glory days. And while I did watch The Apprentice the first year or so, I have had little interest in stomaching Donald Trump’s ego.

But, apparently Brett Michaels, lead singer of Poison, has made a Diet Snapple product through his role on Celebrity Apprentice, and it’s getting a warm reception.

In doing so, the Type I diabetic rocker has raised $250,000 for the American Diabetes Association.

Jersey Shore star J-WOWW loves the hCG diet. Hungry Girl is the Forever 21 of Food Says Lisa Lillien

Hungry Girl Lisa Lillien on practical dieting. Lisa Lillien, known on the Internet as Hungry Girl, describes herself as a “noncook” in an article in the New York Times. Nonetheless, her two most recent cookbooks, Hungry Girl 1-2-3 and Hungry Girl 200 Under 200, both hit the market at the top spot on the New York Times best-seller list for aside and how-to books. More cookbooks are on the way – St. Martin’s Press has agreed to pay an advance of more than $10 million for the next eight Hungary Girl books. Her goal is to provide women with information about how to eat the the most of the tastiest foods while consuming the fewest calories.

However, the lifestyle Hungry Girl endorses has been met with criticism. It’s heavily dependent on packaged and processed foods, which are convenient but lacking in the nutritional benefits of fresh fruits and veggies. “Hungry Girl is like the Forever 21 of food,” said Lillien. You’re getting more for your caloric buck, but you may not necessarily know where it comes from. “I live in the real world, and my people don’t need me to tell them they should be eating steamed halibut.” (more…)

Max Morelli Loses More than 100 Pounds at the Biggest Loser Resort [UPDATED]

UPDATE: Max lost a total of 47 pounds during his five-week stay at the Biggest Loser Resort in July 2024.

We first met Max Morelli in the fall of 2024 almost by accident. It was Biggest Loser season seven, and his father and brother, Ron and Mike Morelli, were competing as the brown team. The show often briefly introduces us to contestants’ families, but they are usually a distant sub story to what’s really going on at the ranch. But Max was different, and the moment he was introduced to America, we all fell in love with him.

While Mike and Ron were sweating it out on the show, Max, at 16-years old, was at home weighing about 425 pounds. He says he never realized he was that big until he saw their transformations during makeover week, and it became his wake-up call. We saw raw emotion from Max as he sobbed in his older brother’s arms, making it clear that he wanted to experience the same success.

“I felt awkward and didn’t know what I was getting myself into,” he says about his accidental appearance on the show and subsequent popularity. “I was just being myself. My emotions were real, the conversations were real, it was me being me.”

Watch our interview with Max in its entirety. The once painfully shy young teen is clearly a more confident, happier and even more mature young man.

Salsa and Guacamole Food Poisoning Threat

Two of my favorite snack foods, salsa and guacamole, have had a not-so-safe recent history of being linked to food poisoning. During the period of 1998 to 2024, the two tortilla dips have been the source of one of every 25 foodborne illness outbreaks connected to restaurants.

This period more than doubled the rate of the previous 10 years.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, between 1984 and 1997, salsa and guacamole accounted for about 1.5 percent of all food poisonings started from restaurants. From 1998 and 2024, that figure almost reached four percent. According to researchers, 5,560 people got sick, and 145 people ended up in the hospital. Three deaths were attributed to the salsa and guacamole outbreaks. Here is how the illnesses broke down:
