Guest Blog: 11 Healthy Cranberry Recipes for Fall

The October Featured Guest Blogger of the Month, for October, are two talented ladies from ChewOnThat Blog. They’re two foodies who can’t help but share their knowledge of and love for the edible everyday on their blog. They’ve always got an engaging anecdote as to why this or that recipe warms their heart, and the recipes are always a hit! Tune in every Tuesday in October to hear what Maxine and Hillary are chewing talking about!

Chew on That here again! I hope you’re enjoying your fall full of tasty ingredients. Maybe you’ve even added some new apple recipes to your repertoire! To continue our agenda of fall ingredients, this week we’re going to focus on cranberries.

Though termed a berry, the cranberry is unlike any of its summer berry counterparts. For one thing, it reigns at a different time of year, harvested in late September and early October, and widely consumed throughout the fall and winter months. The other distinction of the cranberry is its flavor. While most other berries can be eaten alone, cranberries are too tart to be eaten out of hand which is why they’re usually boiled into compotes or baked into all sorts of fall desserts. (more…)

Alcohol Increases Risk of Breast Cancer in Women

I’m sure you know that breast cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer in women, but did you know drinking as little as a half of glass of wine may increase your risk of developing breast cancer? You hear it all the time that a glass of wine is good for your heart, but are you sure you’d want that glass if you knew it could increase the likelihood of developing breast cancer? And it’s not just wine, switching to beer or spirits (liquor) increases your chances just the same. The more alcohol consumed on a regular basis, the greater your risk.

I’m not saying avoid alcohol all together, I’m just saying be aware and practice moderation. Women thinking about having a few glasses of wine a day for their heart-healthy effects need to figure in the new findings when weighing the risks and benefits. It’s important to realize the regular, repeated use increases the chance of breast cancer and having a glass of wine or beer on occasion is not a problem. Besides, by limiting your alcohol intake not only will you help reduce your risk of breast cancer, but you can also cut calories and slim down your waist line.

John McCain Chicken Queso Burger Recipe

This presidential candidate has a love for cheesy greasy foods, like enchiladas and pizza. So the chicken queso burger, created by Food Network in his name, sounds like something John McCain would have no hesitation eating.

The recipe looks incredible, sure to just pop with flavor, especially once the chicken has been grilled. The nutrition facts leave a little to be desired- with 742 calories, 30 grams of fat; that’s 16.5 Weight Watchers Points for you counters. For the low carb dieters, 51 grams of carbs (80 percent from the roll). Those numbers are pretty hard to swallow, and we’re certainly not pitching this as a healthy recipe as-is.

A chicken sandwich is certainly a smart, healthy meal, especially with the salsa, avocados and olive oil (with healthy MUFAs), and a fresh citrus marinade; but once you add the cheese and white bakery roll things take a turn for the worse. So, we’ve come up with a few suggestions for voting out some of the calories and fat. (more…)

Barack Obama Pizza Burger Recipe

Burgers are probably not a part of Barack Obama’s diet, considering all the veggies and nuts he enjoys eating. That didn’t stop Food Network from creating a pizza burger recipe in his name, that they think suits this Chicago candidate’s style.

Knowing that the Democratic candidate prefers a lean, nutritious diet and is very physically fit, it’s hard to imagine him chowing down on one of these burgers. The nutrition facts are astonishing: 1246 calories, 88.5g fat, 260mg cholesterol, 1340mg sodium, 53.6g carbs, 2.1g fiber, 4.7g sugar, 60.6g protein, not to mention nearly 32 WW Points. Whoa! That’s nearly two double Quarter Pounders with cheese from McDonald’s.

We’re certainly not condoning this as a “healthy” recipe. It sounds delicious, and the novelty of a Barack Obama burger could certainly be a fun entree at an election watch party. So we have some suggestions to reduce the fat and calories in this, or any burger. (more…)

Eat to Live, Don’t Live to Eat

Last week, Dr. Phil told his contestants that we need to eat to live not live to eat. Food is the body’s fuel. It is what keeps our hearts beating, our brains running, and our feet moving. Just like other sources of energy, some are higher quality and give us better results than others. Primarily, food is about nutrition and energy; however, we use food for many other purposes.

The majority of first dates include food. Men buy food on dates to demonstrate that they can provide, and it gives us something to do with our nervous hands, a reason to pause and consider what you will say while your mouth is full, and something to look at to avoid eye contact. The majority of our social contacts include food in some form.  We share food to nurture one another; it is a way to say ‘I care about you, your comfort, and your health’. Also, as we mentioned, food is a powerful drug that can impact us physically and emotionally. The emotional aspects, seem to be Dr. Phil’s primary concern in how food may be misused. It’s when we start using food as a drug or a filler than it becomes a problem; that’s when our calories become empty.

According to Dr. Phil’s quiz Are You An Emotional Eater, I would venture that nearly all of us at least have “room for improvement”. Personally, I think there is a balance and you can still make smart choices without limiting yourself socially or completely ignoring your body’s cravings. Even chocolate has researched benefits on mood, but eating a tub of rocky road is not going to be helpful in the short term or the long term. (more…)

Jennifer Love Hewitt Gets Last Word on Weight

I can’t get enough “Love”…

Over the summer, I commented on the fake outrage over Jennifer Love Hewitt’s fake weight issues. Well, I guess the outrage isn’t fake, but the whole ordeal is certainly much ado about nothing. Hewitt hopes to put it to rest once and for all.

If you don’t know about this trivial nonsense, Hewitt was made fun of for beach pictures that revealed that, gasp, she was a human being with real life un-airbrushed blemishes. She attacked the tabloid onslaught by defending womanhood, warts and all.

So when she subsequently lost weight and it was spotlighted in US magazine, she was promptly attacked again for supposedly being a hypocrite. Point being, if it didn’t matter, then why would she lose the weight? The people of course missed the point, which was that it’s mean spirited to attack anyone who doesn’t look like a cartoon character of the female figure. (more…)

Dr. Phil’s Line in the Sand

Nearly three weeks after the first two episodes of Dr. Phil’s Ultimate Weight Loss Race, we finally get to see episode three. The teams moved into the luxurious Dr. Phil house where they were each given a cell phone so Dr. Phil could call them at any time, and a personalized meal kit using Dr. Phil’s 14-day Rapid Start Plan. According to his website, The Rapid Start Plan is a 14-day, calorie-controlled, carbohydrate-modified plan that helps the body prepare for weight loss and the palate prepare for a diet shift.

Dr. Phil’s video message reminded the contestants that this is a competition, but they will be required to work together to succeed as he asked them to decide on a “house leader”. The teams determined Tiffany would make a good “house leader” and perhaps a house mother.

beach.jpgThe next day, the teams headed to Malibu for a beach workout. If you’re lucky enough to live near a beach or visit one on vacation, remember that working out in the sand can increase your difficulty. Each trainer used the environment in a different way to workout their team. The contestants were given a Mio heart rate monitor to help them track the intensity level of their workouts. (more…)

Guest Blog: It’s OK to Eat Post-Gastric Bypass

Sean Amore, weighing 483 pounds at the time, had gastric bypass surgery in March 2024.  Having lost 250 pounds since, Sean continues his weight journey while living with his wife and daughter in Wichita, Kansas and working in public relations – writing about all of the above, and more, on his own blog, My Bariatric Journey.

General consensus in the white-coat-wearing, research-driven medical community is that the “benefits” of gastric bypass surgery (rapid weight loss, compliments from strangers, etc.) only last about 18 months.  The limits on a patient last a lifetime.  For me, that is a good thing.

With dozens of failed diet attempts behind me, I know all too well that I need tight limits and diet guidelines or disaster (in the form of thicker neck, waist, fingers and toes) will follow. (more…)
