Apolo Anton Ohno

Olympic Athlete Spotlight

Sharing company with Michael Phelps, Apolo Anton Ohno, of Seattle, Washington, is one of the most well-recognized male Olympic athletes. He is a five-time medal-winning speed skater and is one of only four Americans who has won three medals in a single Winter Olympics game. Raised by his Japanese-born father, Apolo's dad enrolled him in swimming and inline skating classes when he was a young boy to keep his son busy as he worked 12-hour shifts as a hair salon owner. Even though Apolo won the Washington state championship in the breaststroke, he preferred skating and soon began to focus all of his efforts on becoming a short-track speed skater. In 1996, Apolo became the youngest skater to be admitted into the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center and the rest is skating history. He rejoins the American Olympic team for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic games. (Photo Credit NBC/USOC)
