Eating disorders are serious, often life threatening, conditions that effect sufferer’s mentally, physically, and emotionally. Eating disorders generally include an unhealthy relationship with food and one’s own body image. Eating disorders effect millions of Americans and include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating, and orthorexia nervosa. The causes of eating disorders are complicated and not fully known; psychological issues, low self-esteem, trauma, interpersonal difficulties, cultural norms, learning, and biological factors can all be part of the problem. Treatment can also be very complicated and should be done by professionals. Treatment should include psychological and nutritional counseling; it may include inpatient treatment and medication management. (more…)

One of the hottest new trends in weight loss are detox diets. These cleanses are typically liquid-based and can help people shed unwanted pounds quickly. This is really just water weight and unless you stick to a healthy diet and exercise regimen after, you’ll likely see the weight return.

Hollywood stars have been using these detox cleanses to prepare themselves for red carpet events, and thanks to People Magazine, we’ve got an inside-look at how the likes of Beyonce and Gwyneth cleanse to lose weight.

Beyonce made the Master Cleanse diet a household name. She prepares this recipe with hot water, lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper and drinks only this for 10-14 days. Couple Gets Joint Bypass Surgery

A married couple in Poughkeepsie, New York made a new vow together – to take drastic measures in their weight loss battle by getting joint gastric bypass operations on the same day.measuring tape

In a twist of irony, both of them took up professions saving other people’s lives. Husband Jeff Tryon is a volunteer firefighter, while Trish is an EMT instructor. Now they are taking measures to ensure that they themselves live longer lives.

Before their respective surgeries, Jeff and Trish were morbidly obese, defined as more than 100 pounds overweight. Jeff was 440 pounds, while Trish was 399 pounds. (more…)

  • There’s a product out that I personally buy and enjoy.  It’s called “No Pudge! Fudge Brownie Mix.”  It comes in a variety of flavors: Regular, Cappuccino, Mint, and Raspberry.  All you have to do is mix the powder mix with the amount of vanilla flavored yogurt it says in the directions, heat, cool, cut, and enjoy.  Or you can check out the product’s website and see a big listing of different recipe ideas.
  • An easy and good dessert are the Jello pudding mixes. Simply add skim milk, chill, and enjoy. (more…)

woman with clockWhen it comes to dieting and losing weight, we’ve heard some real doozies. We want to clarify some of these “myths” to help you make healthy choices, and not live in fear of food.

1. “Never eat late at night/after a certain time (i.e. after 8pm) because you’ll gain weight and store more fat.

Well this isn’t always true. The two important things to keep in mind are total calories you are taking in for the day and what your schedule is like. Total calories translates into weight gain. If you take in more calories than you need and expend throughout your day you will start to put on some extra pounds.  Second, knowing your schedule and when you’ll be wake is very important. If you work night shifts, you may be eating breakfast at 1 p.m. and dinner at 9 p.m. (more…)

Common Eating Disorders Defined

Eating disordersIn order to help people better understand eating disorders, here are explanations of anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and orthorexia. If you or someone you know is suffering from any of these symptoms, please contact a therapist or doctor in your area right away.

Anorexia Nervosa is diagnosed when one refuses to maintain a healthy body weight, experiences an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted body image, and has not experienced a menstrual cycles for three months in a row (in females). A BMI less than 18.5 in adults generally suggests Anorexia Nervosa. Those with this disorder are often secretive, exercise excessively, drastically restrict their intake of food, and practice other forms of self-harm. Other effects of this disorder include decreased libido, thinning hair, growth of lanugo (delicate down-like hair), consistent feeling of coldness, zinc deficiency, reduced white blood cell count, reduced immunity, sunken eyes, swollen ankles, tooth decay, constipation, dry skin, dry lips, dry hair, poor circulation, headaches, easily bruised, brittle fingernails, fainting, and starvation. The Joy of Cooking, Super-Sized!

Portion distortion isn’t just exclusive to your dining destinations, be it fast food or otherwise. A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that it’s spilled over into the recipe books, too!recipes

The study looked at how classic recipes have changed during the past 70 years and found a nearly 40 percent increase in calories per serving for just about every recipe reviewed, about an extra 77 calories.

The study identified the trend in many cookbooks, but it focused on the iconic Joy of Cooking. It was first published in the ’30s and has been regularly updated, most recently in 2006. (more…)

New, Healthier Mardi Gras Favorites

Tuesday, February 24 is Mardi Gras, which is the 24-hour food fest that ushers in the six weeks of Lent, the 40 days of abstinence leading up to holiday, Easter. Similar to Thanksgiving, this is one of those holidays that is dedicated to eating – a lot.

With a name that translates to “Fat Tuesday,” there is really not much hope for getting through the Mardi Gras’ festivities without loosening your belt a few notches.
