The Show-Down of the Sugars: Added vs. Natural

Seven teaspoons of assorted sugar spilling onto a wooden background

For something so sweet, sugar really can be quite awful. That’s because if you’re consuming more than 21 percent of your daily calories from added sugars, you double your risk of death from heart disease compared to people who consume just 10 percent of their calories from added sugars.

That’s according to a 2024 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine. The researchers also found that if you consume slightly less added sugar, you’re still at a higher risk of death. Those who consumed 17 to 21 percent of their daily calories from added sugars increased their risk of death from heart disease by 38 percent.

But the key word there is “added.” Sugars that are considered “added” aren’t just a sprinkle of granulated sweetness in your morning coffee, but high-fructose corn syrup, sugars in cakes, cookies and sodas, and other processed foods. This added sugar can cause blood sugar spikes, weight gain and can leave you feeling hungry. Natural sugar—the kind found in whole fruits and milk—is different.

Courtney McCormick, Corporate Dietitian at Nutrisystem, answers your most pressing questions about added and natural sugars below and gives some advice on how to avoid added sugars and incorporate natural sugars into your diet.

6 “Healthy” Foods You Should Avoid When Trying To Lose Weight

We’ve all been there. You’re walking down the aisles of the grocery and can’t help but notice the call outs on products. Low fat! Multigrain! Full of vitamins!

How true are these labels?

Courtney McCormick, Corporate Dietitian at Nutrisystem, says some might be too good to be true and encourages you to avoid these six “healthy” foods.

1. Low-fat snacks
Studies at Cornell have found that we tend to eat 50 percent more of foods labeled “low fat” than the regular version of the product. Scientists call this “the halo effect,” because eating things we perceive as healthy makes us feel virtuous. Also, many low-fat foods tend to have more sugar to compensate for the lack of fat, which adds flavor. Stick to natural low-fat snacks, such as fruits and veggies. Or, if you’re opting for low-fat, be very mindful of your portion sizes. Just because a snack is low-fat doesn’t mean you can eat the whole box.

Day After Super Bowl Biggest Diet Decision Day for Men

Chips, football and Six Pack of Beer and TV

According to an online US survey, 1 in 4 football fans claim to have gained an average of 10 pounds during football season.

The survey, conducted on behalf of Nutrisystem by Harris Interactive, found that out of 1,283 American football fans polled in early January 2024, 25 percent reported that they gained weight during the football season. For those that reported weight gain, the average was 10 pounds, while 16 percent admitted they gained 20 pounds or more.

Here’s another shocker: According to the USDA, the Super Bowl is the second largest food consumption day behind Thanksgiving. Americans will eat 30 million pounds of snacks, with the average football fan consuming 1,200 calories and 50 grams of fat, reports The Calorie Control Council. And that’s just from snacking- it doesn’t even take into to account all the alcohol and calorie-laden beverages that are also consumed.

This weight gain can be made even worse if you’re a fan of the losing team. According to a recent study published in Psychological Science, fans of the losing team tend to load up on saturated fats and sugars the Monday after the big game, whereas fans of the winning team opt for healthier foods.

Jenny Craig Wins the 2024 Diet Taste Test!

Which meal delivery diet really stands out in taste? For the fifth year in a row, Next Advisor held its Diet Taste Test, which focuses on providing a better look at  the most popular dieting services in the country. The goal is to learn how the food actually tastes to real people. This year, Jenny Craig was the big winner, beating  bistroMD, who won 2024’s Taste Test.

The test is performed when a week’s worth of standard meals from each dieting group is consumed anonymously. A group of 12 men and women are asked to try the food, rating it on a scale of 1 – 10 for taste, as well as appearance. The tasters are unaware of which brand they are eating at the time, considering all labels are taken off before the tests are performed. The anonymous tasters tried food from bistroMD, Jenny Craig, The 17 Day Diet, Nutrisystem, and Diet-to-Go. The other factors taken into consideration for the test are price, customization, availability of fitness tools, strength, and availability of support provided to the consumer. See How the Stars are Dieting in 2024

gwyneth-paltrow

Diet is the word of the season, no matter what you claim as your profession. Celebrities aren’t immune, and their diet proclivities make front-page news. Here’s how some of the biggest names have lost some of their winter pounds, whether living in the real world or prepping for the red carpet season ahead.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Though Paltrow does not have a need to lose weight — she has been deemed “Queen of the Cleanse” — she recently posted about her “annual deep cleanse.” Her annual diet consists of three meals and one snack and focuses on ridding your body of toxins in your system. No dairy, sweeteners, alcohol, caffeine, wheat, or any meat, including seafood.

Soleil Moon-Frye

We spoke with Frye recently about her incredible 23 pound weight loss, something she is very proud of. Frye lost the weight using Nutrisystem‘s My Way and Fast 5, programs that helped her keep on track after a third baby. The former Punky Brewster star looks great, and is happy to be able to eat whatever she likes!

Timothy Spall

Spall, the well-known Harry Potter actor who plays Wormtail, emerged at the Film Critics Circle Award quite a bit lighter. Spall credits his weight loss to the motivation of his wife, a personal trainer, and a huge change in his diet. Spall’s son has also recently celebrated a huge weight loss of his own. (more…)

Known best as the 80’s child star of Punky Brewster, Soleil Moon-Frye is back in the spotlight after losing 23 pounds. She credits Nutrisystem’s Fast 5 and My Way, a program she is emphatic about.

“It has just been amazing,” Frye gushed to DietsInReview.com this week. She went on to discuss how after having her third child, her baby weight was “just not coming off and I had to figure out a way to lose it!” Through a friend who had been using the program, Frye learned about Nutrisystem and hopped online to sign up.

“In the first week, I dropped five pounds and thought, ‘I can do this.'” The ease combined with the health benefits of the program kept Frye on track. Though she explains that some weeks she lost a pound or two, and other weeks it was a bit more, the fact that it was done in a healthy way was important. “I am able to eat all the things I love, and I am able to enjoy the things I eat,” Frye explained.  (more…)

Leaning In to Get Lean: Meet the Rare Female CEOs in the Diet Industry

female-CEO

By Shae Blevins

The 2024 Fortune 500 List included 24 female CEOs – the most in history – and the United States elected a record-setting 100 women to the 113th Congress. Women are making their move!

But a lack of female leadership is still evident in the industry that targets American women most: Wellness. That’s the $20 billion industry that encompasses diet, fitness, and weight loss. It’s an industry where 85% of the consumers are women, and the grand majority of executive leadership — from CEOs to boards — are male. That’s right, there are dudes perched at the brands that prominently lead the industry – from the girl-powered Jillian Michaels to the all-inclusive Weight Watchers.

Fortunately, there are a few brands breaking the industry norm with female CEOs. It’s been two years since industry giant Nutrisystem appointed its first female CEO, and the brand is seemingly better for it. And most recently, Retrofit replaced its CEO with a woman. One feather in this hat was lost last December, when Dana Fiser left her two-year reign as CEO at Jenny Craig.

Meet the three shining female stars blazing trails in wellness: (more…)
