Interview with Micah McCain from Bravo’s Work Out

Welcome to Diets in Review! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Micah McCain was one of the “Sky Labbers” on the recently wrapped third season ofmicah mccain Bravo’s Work Out, a reality show that follows the life and times of the posh Beverly Hills Sky Sport Spa owner, Jackie Warner. What’s a Sky Labber? Part of the Work Out series is following a group of individuals who’ve signed up for Jackie’s hardcore weight loss bootcamp, Sky Lab. Micah was one of the lucky few to participate, and he lost 23 pounds during the filming of the show.

“I started working out 3 months before, worked out on the show 5 months, and it’s been 2 months since,” explains Micah. “Total loss of 71 pounds! I’m tired and I’m slightly hungry!”

Micah works in Hollywood doing a little bit of everything from “entertaining on stage, on camera and on the street,” he says. He has a new cabaret show that’s opening next weekend in L.A. and says that this experience on Work Out means he’s going to be much happier in the clothes he’s wearing while performing.

micah mccainI asked if he’s tried out Jackie Warner’s new Work Out DVD- and he exclaimed that he has not, because he has already learned the tools it teaches. However, anyone who hasn’t worked with the Sky team, he thinks it would offer an amazing workout.

When asked if he has any advice for those facing their own weight loss or emotional issues - Micah said “You’ve gotta mix it up!”. “Right when you feel like you’re getting bored of the food, you’re getting bored of the cardio, you’re getting bored of the training sessions, you’re getting bored in the gym… Please have the power and the knowledge to be aware that you’re getting bored, shake it up and find something new. I couldn’t run anymore. I was dying. I was like, I gotta get a bike, I can’t stop my cardio. And then I couldn’t bike any more, so I started taking cardio dance classes. Every time I changed it I got re-inspired. I would not let myself feel let down that I wasn’t doing what I wanted to do and fulfilling my mission of being a better person.”

Listen here to learn more about Micah’s experience during Bravo’s Work Out, and how it’s positively changed his life since.

Thank you, Micah!

Looking Good… Naked

Many of us can don our favorite pair of jeans or even our bathing suits and feel pretty confident with how we look. But looking good naked? Yikes! For those of us whose name is not Gisele Bundchen, we feel like turning off the lights, closing the drapes and throwing towels over our bedroom mirrors when we are sans clothing.

But leave it to Oprah Winfrey and famed stylist Carson Kressley, one of the Fab Fives from the television show “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” to save us from our naked misery. Friday on Oprah, the show is reaired an episode on how to look good naked.

Kressley does NOT suggest that you starve yourself on a 3-day crash diet or wear the piece of spandex cinched around your waist to make your middle look smaller. Instead, he focuses on the crux of our incalculable fear in being bare: Self-Esteem.

With some very creative and heartfelt ways of communicating with these women, he tries to show us that all the self-berating we inflict upon ourselves, is just that: a harmful dialogue that exists in our heads and in our heads only. In fact, when it comes down to it, more often than not, we see ourselves much heavier than what we really are.

You’ll have to turn into Oprah on Friday to see how he accomplishes this factual and illuminating reality. One of the lines that I love from this show is “You don’t have to be perfect to be pretty.” Isn’t that true? If you have ever dealt with a weight issue or body image problem, watch this episode. It’s 60 minutes of television that has the capacity to really change how you see yourself.

Jenny Craig on the Today Show

All this week, the Today Show will be looking at some of the most popular diet programs on the market.  Each day they will highlight one, featuring a woman who has followed the weight loss plan for three months. Matt quoted a daunting statistic, 66% of American adults are overweight. It’s not a number that should surprise anyone, but make the lingering “obesity epidemic” that much more real. jenny craig

This morning, all eyes were on Jenny Craig, and the newest recruit Lisa Abbott. Lisa said she’s been struggling with her weight for more than 12 years. She gave birth to twins, life got busy, like many American women and moms, her weight took a back seat to everything else. She said that this time, she was ready to feel healthy and ready to be a positive role model for her daughters.

Lisa followed Jenny Craig for the past three months- documenting the entire experience for the Today Show. Her starting weight was 181 pounds, and on the show this morning she had lost 18 pounds, currently 163.

The Jenny Craig program in the past few years has been made very popular by stars like Kirstie Alley, Valerie Bertinelli and now Queen Latifah. Just like these divas of weight loss, Lisa Abbott also stuck exclusively to the Jenny Cuisine frozen meals. Three meals a day, perfectly portion controlled, supplemented with fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and a total daily caloric intake of 1200 calories.

Lisa admitted to being hungry in the first few weeks, as the calories were far below her usual. She said in time, that went away. Her stomach is now much smaller and even if she wanted to eat a larger portion, she said she just can’t do it. She expressed her surprise at how good the Jenny Craig meals were, saying they were “very good and very tasty.”

In addition to the Jenny Craig diet, Lisa has a consistent exercise regimen, working out at 24 hour Fitness (also known as the Biggest Loser gym).

Tomorrow, tune in to the Today Show as they follow one woman on Weight Watchers, the 40+ year weight loss giant.

Bariatric Surgery and its health benefits

With obesity being the number one public health problem facing Americans today, finding long-term solutions that reduce the harmful effects of this growing epidemic. On the 4/20/08 episode of 60 Minutes, Lesley Stahl reported on the surprising healthy effects that having weight loss surgery is having on many patients. When the surgery is performed and the individual adheres to the post-operative dietary and exercise guidelines, reductions in hypertension, coronary artery disease, Type II diabetes are seen as well as reduced risk for certain cancers like breast, colon, endometrial cancers. Obviously, bariatric surgery is not just about losing pounds. These new findings are also broadening the medical community’s knowledge of the complex interplay between obesity and these other health conditions.

Once again, Jillian Michaels produced not only the Biggest Loser, Ali Vincent, she also produced the at-home Biggest Loser, Bernie. Training partner Bob Harper has said she’s possibly the best trainer in the world. At a petite 5′2″ and 115 pounds, she says her training with Ali consisted of “Beatings, Beatings, Beatings.”

Congrats to Biggest Loser’s First Female Winner- Ali Vincent!

See Ali’s reaction to winning immediately following the Biggest Loser finale with the DietsInReview.com interview live from LA.

Ali Vincent - Winner of Season 5 Biggest Loser from Diets in Review on Vimeo.
She did it! Ali Vincent told everyone in week 4 during her elimination with mom, Bette-Sue, that she would be the Biggest Loser. At the time, she meant the at-home winner, not knowing of a twist that would invite all the eliminated players back to the ranch. She won that weigh-in, and all weigh-ins since, and earned a spot back at the Biggest Loser ranch.Ali had two goals when she started Biggest Loser- to wear sleeveless shirts and to become the first female Biggest Loser. With unprecedented determination and hard work, Ali can mark off both of these from her to-do list. When host Alison informed Ali that she only needed to lose 106 pounds to beat the weight-loss giant Roger, the crowd went nuts inside that studio. If you’ll remember, Ali’s last weigh-in at the ranch was 99 pounds- meaning she had to lose only six pounds in the three weeks at home. One look at her in that knock-out dress, and everyone in there knew she owned that weigh in. Trainer Bob Harper was heard saying that as soon as she walked out onto the stage, he knew she had won. She lost a total of 112 pounds.Ali’s win is not only a major life-changing accomplishment for herself, but for women everywhere. A girl did it. She beat some very big boys. She serves as an inspiration to women everywhere that nothing can stand in your way. Ali continually said last night “Believe It, Be It.” It’s a mantra I expect to hear flying out of the mouth of women.

Ali Vincent Biggest Loer

Her trainer, Jillian Michaels, was over the moon with joy at Ali’s amazing win. She screamed “It’s a Girl!” And while there won’t be any cigars, she assured they would celebrate with carrots and champagne! Bette-Sue, Ali’s mother and Biggest Loser teammate, looked as proud as a mother could. With a beaming smile, she boasted “I made her!”

Congratulations Ali on such a tremendous accomplishment. Like you said last night, you might be the first female Biggest Loser, but thanks to you, there will be so many more.

Congratulations Bernie! Biggest Loser’s at-home winner.

We were thrilled to be there last night to see Bernie win the Biggest Loser at-home winner. Bernie was never one of the big guys in the house, but beat the odds by losing more weight than Curtis, Dan and final four contestant Mark. He lost 130 pounds to lose the highest percentage of weight in the house and he’ll be taking home $100,000.

Bernie Salazar - Biggest Loser at home winner from Diets in Review on Vimeo.

He told DietsInReview.com after his elimination that he planned to use that money to help his mom repair her badly damaged basement due to three floods in Indiana this past year. Last night, he kept to his word and assured that will be the first thing he does.We had the pleasure of meeting Bernie’s entire family and they are truly some of the kindest and funniest people. Bernie is blessed with an amazing family and they certainly have a lot to be proud of in him.

Best of luck to your Bernie, Biggest Loser at-home!

I Can Make You Thin, Episode 5

There’s another weight loss show, following the immense success of The Biggest Loser series. Where that show is more about hardcore fitness, and strict adherence to healthier eating, TLC’s “I Can Make You Thin” is about transforming your mind, and the weight loss will follow.

Host Paul McKenna comes across sort of like a TV magician in his presentation, but that’s a part of his self-help zeal. It’s certainly uplifting, and even funny at times. McKenna has four golden rules for eating:

1. When You’re Hungry, Eat!
2. Eat What You Want (Not What You Think You Should).
3. Eat Consciously.
4. When You Think You’re Full, Stop.

It sounds painfully simple, and number two even seems ridiculous on the surface. But in reality what he means is, eating shouldn’t be about punishment.

Episode five of I Can Make You Thin aired Sunday night. The theme centered around confidence and self-esteem. The show talked about the scientific reasoning for why overweight people are stuck in a rut. Basically, when you visualize yourself as “I am fat,” then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Since “I’m fat” I can’t do certain exercises, etc. But when the visualization is tweaked a little, to “I am not at my ideal weight” the person sees themselves as being able to change because the real you is the healthy version.

McKenna went through one of his self-help techniques, this time addressing the little voice in your head that says mean things about you. His theme tends to be that you take the negative element and you visualize it in a completely different way, thus transforming your habit.

Last week, it was visualizing the nastiest thing you could think of eating when you are about to give in to your comfort food. So, maybe you see worms instead of spaghetti. Eventually, you begin to associate those foods with the nasty substitute.

In this week’s episode, he took a pretty comical approach to defeating the negative voice in your head: change it to a comical/goofy voice. So, every time you hear that voice you can’t take it seriously. On the surface, it seems like these techniques are sort of ridiculous. But what it’s all about is transforming your involuntary habits.

One particularly striking case was Bevin the lawyer. Here was an attractive woman, who if you were to look at her you would figure maybe she could lose 15 pounds or so. But, she acted like she needed to lose 150. Her self-esteem was what held her back. When McKenna taught her how to transform her negative thoughts, she began to look at herself in the mirror differently.

The results best illustrated what Paul McKenna’s approach is all about: Losing weight is a byproduct of transforming your self-worth. Bevin even said that the 12 pounds that she lost came as a byproduct to her new self-confidence.

Towards the end of this week’s episode of I Can Make You Thin, McKenna took the audience and viewers through an exercise centered around the phrase “I accept myself.” If you can sum up the positive approach that Paul McKenna espouses with one phrase, this is it. You need to work on your mind before your waistline.

Paul McKenna’s techniques are certainly unconventional. He doesn’t talk about specific dietary measures, other than how you approach eating mentally. In fact, he doesn’t tell people that any food is off limits. But, if you follow his golden rules, you can eat sensibly and anything in moderation. The weight loss will follow.
