 What is it?

SierraSil is a joint health supplement that is used for reducing the pain and stiffness associated with inflammation. Their advertising claims that SierraSil makes movement and stretching easier and pain-free after only one to two weeks of daily use. They recommend their products for people that are dealing with the kind of mild joint pain related to recreational athletics, repetitive motion stress, and the challenges of aging.

Right now the highest ranked joint health supplement according to our team of nutritional experts is Flexitrinol. It has been shown in independent trials to improve overall joint health while also reducing inflammation. Click here to learn more about what makes Flexitrinol so effective.

SierraSil Ingredients and Side Effects
Calcium Iron Hydrothermal Mineral Complex

Calcium: A fundamental part of the bones and teeth that is also necessary for proper heart, nerve, and blood-clotting functionality. Calcium is used in the treatment of a number of conditions including:

  • Indigestion
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Kidney disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Hyperparathyroidism
  • Premenstrual syndrome

The only side effects that are generally thought might be related to short-term calcium consumption are belching, gas, and abdominal bloating.

Doctors recommend that larger doses of calcium be avoided, as doses that exceed the daily recommended levels put the consumer at a higher risk for heart attack. Adult humans should not exceed 1000 mg of calcium per day, and it should especially be avoided by smokers, individuals undergoing hormone replacement therapy, or anyone with a preexisting kidney condition.

Iron: One of the most important minerals for the human body. Iron is found in the blood where it helps deliver oxygen from the lungs to the body and carbon dioxide back to the lungs to be exhaled. Iron is used in the treatment of a number of conditions including:

  • Anemia
  • Learning problems
  • Heart failure
  • Fatigue

Iron is generally considered safe for humans, however some side effects that are potentially connected to iron consumption include:

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Blackened teeth

There is also some concern that iron supplements may raise the risk of contracting heart disease, especially in those individuals that already have Type II diabetes.

Hydrothermal Mineral Complex: The main active ingredient that SierraSil relies on for most of its joint-friendly effects. Hydrothermal mineral complex is a clay-like substance found in the Sierra Mountains that is thought to have some anti-inflammatory properties.

Some recent studies have shown that hydrothermal mineral complex can inhibit the spread of cytokine interleukins, one of the main agents behind inflammation. The same studies also showed that it also improved cognitive function and general physical wellbeing.

The study of hydrothermal mineral complex is still very new and there is no data about its long-term effects. In the short term, the most serious side effect that may be connected to hydrothermal mineral complex is bloating and flatulence.

SierraSil Quality of Ingredients

SierraSil has an incredibly limited ingredients list. It does not use any of the traditional joint health supplement ingredients like glucosamine, chondroitin, or MSM that have proven to be both safe and effective for improving core-level joint health.

Calcium is useful for skeletal health, which is certainly a part of the connective system, however it is just a small part of the overall connective complex. The other ingredients in SierraSil are generally beneficial for bodily wellness, however they do not have any indications that are specifically helpful for the joints themselves.

Hydrothermal mineral complex has shown some ability in clinical trials sponsored by SierraSil to reduce the pain, swelling, and stiffness that are associated with inflammation, however that is a symptom of stress and irritation, not the cause.

Furthermore, our experts would like to caution our readers from supplements that contain iron and calcium. Both minerals have the same issue in that a little bit of them is good but a lot can have very serious consequences for consumers.

The issue with iron and calcium as part of a dietary supplement indicated for daily use is that their levels will be permanently elevated and users are at risk for developing a backup of iron or calcium that down the road could have serious consequences for the user’s heart, liver, and kidneys.

Unless you have a specific iron or calcium deficiency, our team of nutrition and wellness experts does not recommend their use in daily supplements.

The Price and Quality of SierraSil

SierraSil is sold through their manufacturer’s website and through a number of other online retailers. In general, consumers should expect to pay something similar to these prices:

  • 1, 90-count bottle of SierraSil Joint Formula 14 capsules (one-time purchase price): $32.99
  • 1, 90-count bottle of SierraSil Joint Formula 14 capsules (automatically recurring purchase price): $23.99

SierraSil is indicated for use three times a day, which makes each bottle approximately a one-month supply. This makes the price of SierraSil about average in terms of per day cost, however given that it is lacking a number of integral joint health chemicals many users may also want to seek out a secondary supplement that can provide more core level support. This would make SierraSil a much less cost-effective option.

Customer Opinions of SierraSil

The online reviews of SierraSil from customers on independent websites are surprisingly negative. More than half of the SierraSil reviews on Amazon were optimal and they have one of the lowest average ratings of any joint health supplement that our team has analyzed. Common criticisms of SierraSil were similar to these:

“Their routine is a hassle and the pills are hard to swallow, but I stuck with it until I’d taken the entire bottle. After all that my knees were just as cranky as ever, so I didn’t choose to re-order.”

“I’ve been taking SierraSil every single day for nine months now and I have yet to see any kind of difference in my pain levels. I’m going to finish this last bottle and if it still hasn’t done anything then I guess I got played for a fool.

“I bought SierraSil because a friend recommended it, but it didn’t work. When I brought that up to him he said that he hadn’t tried it, he’d just read about it – we aren’t friends any more.”

The most common complaint about SierraSil by far was its lack of effectiveness. One of the more unique complaints about SierraSil that kept coming up was that it was indicated to be taken on an empty stomach, and not, under any circumstances, with food.

When SierraSil is taken with food the active ingredients bond to the food particles in the stomach and are passed through without ever being absorbed. Many customers were frustrated because it made finding time to take the pills more difficult, while others were bothered because they did not realize this at first and took the pill with food for a time, essentially wasting their time and money.

There were also a number of complaints regarding customer service and shipping issues, particularly related to the length of time it took to receive orders.

Conclusion – Does SierraSil Work?

Our sometimes-divided team of nutritional experts was unanimous this time in their analysis of SierraSil. Every member of our panel agreed that readers can easily find a more effective joint health supplement.

The first reason that they gave is that they believe the best joint health supplements stimulate collagen growth, improve synovial fluid health, and work to make joints healthier at the core level. Ingredients like glucosamine and chondroitin are excellent for this purpose and are for this reason they can be found in almost every one of the top joint health supplements on the market today.

Secondly, our nutrition experts do not recommend supplements with calcium or iron in them unless you specifically have a calcium or iron deficiency. For most consumers there is no need to add excess amounts of these minerals to their diet, and there could even be negative consequences related to their long-term build up.

Flexitrinol is the supplement that our team currently recommends for all joint health-specific supplement needs. Flexitrinol contains glucosamine, chondroitin, and a blend of other proven effective ingredients for naturally building better joints. ED Wise says:

I have taken SierrraSil for about 6 weeks. Prior to taking the pill I had back problems. I found that after 2 weeks of taking the pills my back was feeling much better although I have experienced arthritis in my fingers and it doesn’t appear to help.
I am not a pill taker and my concern for any of these products is what is it doing to my liver. What are the side effects of Flexitrinol?

Eva Jurovich says:

After hearing about Sierra Sil from several Talk Show Hosts I decided to try Sierra Sil. I took the 3 capsules on Nov. 2,2019 followed by 6 glasses of water spread out over a 24-hour period as per instructions . For the first 5 days I didn’t notice any effect then on the 6th day I woke up with no pain from Arthritis.Great! I continued taking Sierra Sil in this manner till Nov. 11. On Nov. 12 I woke up with no pain but also no appetite and didn’t feel right. I decided to go to Emergency where it was discovered that I was low in Sodium. The doctor told me to throw away the Sierra Sil and to drink a glass of water with 1/2 teaspoon of salt ( and I could add a little sugar).
I quit taking Sierra Sil and after about a week some Arthritis pain returned. I paid $30.39 and was wondering how I can get my money back guarantee on the remaining 80 capsules.

Margaret Shannon says:

Can I take SierraSil when I have had a knee replacement

Adrienne Rupke says:

I have been taking SierraSil for a number of years. It has worked wonders for my arthritic hands! I have swollen finger joints and bent fingers but I rarely have pain since I started taking SierraSil. It works for me.
I take only two capsules (I am a small adult) every morning before breakfast. As I said, I am virtually pain free unless I overdo heavy working.
I can’t speak for others, but it works for me.
I would be interested in testing your product in comparison to SierraSil,

Maggie says:

I took Sierra Sil for osteoarthritis in my SI joint which had shown up in a bone scan. It worked very quickly and I am pain free even though I haven’t taken it for many years. It didn’t seem to work for the arthritis in my fingers but I’m going to give it another try

Sandra Lou Bray says:

Question , is it safe to take it for very long periods of time ?
How much iron & calcium is in 3 pills ?
It is not recommended to take either unless body has a shortage
