Midol Complete is an over-the-counter medication that comes in capsule form. It contains a mix of ingredients intended to treat the multiple symptoms that women deal while with on their periods.

The product claims to reduce menstrual cramps, bloating, back pain, and fatigue in women. It aims to provide effective relief from the discomfort and pain felt during PMS, as well as eliminate water retention – something which it claims other products do not do. Each dose is supposed to work for up to six hours, and there is no prescribed limit to the length of time it can be taken.

A stronger and more direct alternative that we’ve found for helping deal with womens’ overall reproductive function is Libitrinex. Its ingredients are top-grade and specially designed to deal with women’s menstrual functions. More on Libitrinex can be found by clicking this link.

MIDOL COMPLETE INGREDIENTS AND SIDE EFFECTS

Midol Complete contains very few active ingredients, compared to other products for women’s reproductive health. The complete list contains only three:

Acetaminophen Caffeine Pyrilamine Maleate

Acetaminophen: A standard pain reliever and fever reducer. It was discovered in 1877 and quickly became the most popular medication for pain throughout Europe and the United States. There are potential side effects which may include drowsiness and reduction in motor function.

Caffeine: A stimulant that is found naturally in certain plans and nuts, but most commonly in cocoa, coffee, and tea. In small doses it can increase energy and provide a minor boost to cardiovascular health. In larger doses, however, it could lead to tachycardia (rapid heart rate), irritability, sleeplessness, and hyperactivity in children.

Pyrilamine Maleate: An antihistamine with certain numbing properties. It’s a common ingredient in cold medications due to its ability to lower inflammation, and is mostly used for treating inflamed sinuses and allergic conjunctivitis, the medical term for an eye allergy.

In addition to the above, there are several inactive ingredients like carnauba wax and shellac (for forming the capsule), as well as synthetic ingredients like titanium dioxide and FD&C Blue #2 (for coloring) and propylene glycol.

MIDOL COMPLETE QUALITY OF INGREDIENTS

Midol Complete is almost solely made up of ingredients that you would find in any other medicine for pain, including Tylenol and DayQuil, and so they have been tested in laboratories and determined to be safe. That said, there are certain drawbacks to the ingredients that you will find that should make customers pay attention to the cautions on the label.

Acetaminophen is by far the most common pain reliever and fever reducer on the commercial medical market, but there are serious side effects if too much is taken. If someone takes a more powerful dose, or they take more than the total daily recommended dosage, there’s the possibility of harming the liver. Acetaminophen is toxic to the liver in high amounts, which can cause tissue damage. Having three or more alcoholic drinks a day while taking a product with acetaminophen in it can dramatically increase the likelihood of a toxic reaction. The same thing can happen if you take it with other medicines that contain acetaminophen.

Caffeine is a simple stimulant, which was very likely added to this medicine in order to speed up the body’s absorption of the other ingredients, but otherwise it doesn’t seem to have much of a purpose here. While it can have a positive effect on blood circulation, which does have a lot to do with the biology of menstrual problems, it has no direct effect on hormones or the ovaries. In addition, the amount of caffeine (60 mg) is nearly the amount found in a full cup of coffee (95 mg), meaning it could cause sleeping problems if taken too late in the day or afternoon.

The addition of pyrilamine maleate seems intended for helping with bloating and inflammation of tissues, due to its properties as an antihistamine. However, according the National Institute of Health, there’s no clear mention at all that this ingredient has any direct effect on the main areas affected by menstrual cramps, mainly the uterus, hips, thighs, and stomach.

THE PRICE AND QUALITY OF MIDOL COMPLETE

Midol Complete is inexpensive, but the exact price depends on where you’re buying it from. Typical prices for a box of 16 caplets appear to range from $3.97 – $4.99 in stores, to $4.49+ online.

That said, the price reflects the ingredients. The ingredients are cheap and generic, and are used in a wide variety of other medicines, and there is very little to suggest that they have any specific effects on the endocrine system. Technically, there is very little difference between taking Midol Complete and just taking a Tylenol:

Midol Complete (active ingredients):

  • acetaminophen – 500 mg
  • caffeine – 60 mg
  • pyrilamine maleate – 15 mg

Tylenol Extra Strength (active ingredient):

  • acetaminophen – 500 mg

As can be seen, there is little difference between the two. The only real difference is the addition of caffeine – for quick-absorption – and an antihistamine, which has nothing to do with menstrual cramps. Therefore – despite the price – the ingredients mean that it’s not guaranteed to address the root causes of menstrual issues, and therefore not guaranteed to work as well as other products designed with the menstrual cycle in mind.

Bayer’s main corporate website is far too wide-ranging to be used to contact them about Midol Complete in particular, and so there is a separate page for the Midol brand. The website is clean and has sections with general information about periods, symptoms, causes, and guidelines for dealing with those symptoms.

Their “Buy Online” section provides an automatic search for pharmacies and stores that sell the product, instead of allowing one to buy from them directly. They have an FAQ section, but it mostly has to do with PMS symptoms and questions about using various Midol products.

CUSTOMER OPINIONS OF MIDOL COMPLETE

Midol Complete’s main website contains no reviews of the product, and so one has to look to other online retailers in order to gauge customer satisfaction. Here are some impressions of the product:

“The pills alleviate the pain of my menstrual cramps – enough said!”

“The medicine makes me feel tired and hazy, and I could barely function.”

“Helps relieve me of bloating and water retention.”

“For the price, it does a fair job.

“The product really helped me with the migraines I suffer.”

It’s clear that customers that like the product are satisfied with its pain-relieving properties – which is to be expected from a product that is little more than an extra-strength pain reliever. Others were less satisfied with the effects that the acetaminophen had on them, as some seem to be more susceptible to the drowsiness-causing effects of the medicine.

CONCLUSION – DOES MIDOL COMPLETE WORK?

It is clear from the ingredients and the customer reviews that the product is strong as a pain-reliever, but as to its stated purpose of relieving menstrual symptoms, it’s unclear how effective it really is.

There are very few indications about its ability to directly address hormone balance, uterine health, and inflammation – the primary causes of pain and discomfort before and during a woman’s menstrual cycle.

Customers looking for a simple pain reliever will get what they pay for, but for those who want a product that will work with the body and provide relief will be better served looking to specialized products designed explicitly for that purpose.

Based on our product reviews, the best product for menstrual health is Libitrinex. Its ingredients are designed to restore balance to women’s hormones, boost uterine health, and even works to revitalize the libido. On top of that, it’s made from 100% natural ingredients and is produced in a lab that exceeds FDA standards for quality.

For women who want to ease the pain of menses and improve their overall sexual health, Libitrinex is a far more sensible and effective alternative. For more about Libitrinex, check out this link.
