What is it?

St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Facial Moisturizer is a skin care product that’s designed to boost collagen and elastin production. These are the two main building blocks of the skin, and the advertising for St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Facial Moisturizer claims that it can increase the levels of new skin production while also moisturizing and reducing redness. Their formula theoretically works to make the skin smoother and less wrinkled, leading to a younger, healthier appearance.

Our team of experts recommends Kremotex to our readers. Kremotex is specially formulated to even and repair skin tone, smooth out inconsistencies, and improve general dermal health. Click here to see Kremotex’s scores from their battery of tests.

St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Facial Moisturizer Ingredients and Side Effects
Safflower Seed Oil Soybean Oil Triethanolamine
Cetyl Alcohol Linalool Coumarin

Safflower Seed Oil: A derivative taken from safflower plants, a close relative of the sunflower. There have been relatively few studies carried out into the effects of safflower, especially in relation to skin care, however some cosmetics companies claim that it smoothes and moisturizes the skin.

Safflower oil does contain linoleic acid, a form of fatty acid that can act as an emollient and smoothing agent, however there is no data backing up the manufacturers claims that it has moisturizing properties.

Safflower seed has not been shown to have any negative consequences for users’ health, however there are no studies about its long-term safety.

Soybean Oil: A frequent food additive that is also occasionally found in skin care products because of its emollient and occlusive properties. Some researchers claim that soybean derivatives may have antioxidant properties as well, however if so they are mild.

Soybean oil is generally safe for most users, and there are no known serious side effects associated with its consumption, although some individuals have allergic reactions to products that use soy.

Triethanolamine: A pH balancer that is not often found in skin care products any more due to concerns about toxicity. It has some fragrance-neutralizing properties as well, however there is no medical, therapeutic, or wellness benefit to triethanolamine.

The EPA, FDA, EU and the Canadian ECDSL all list triethanolamine as a hazardous chemical due to concerns that it may potentially mutate cells, dry and age skin over time, and even lead to cancer.

Cetyl Alcohol: Another fatty alcohol similar to linoleic alcohol that is frequently found in skin care products as a thickener and emollient. Fatty alcohols are thought to be harmless and somewhat helpful in skin care products, though their therapeutic value is limited.

Cetyl alcohol is safe for the majority of users and should not be confused with benzyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, or denatured alcohol. These chemicals are dehydrating and hazardous to the skin, whereas fatty acids are helpful and have no known negative side effects.

Linalool: A fragrance compound that smells similar to lavender but is much more abrasive on the skin. Linalool has been known to initiate bouts of contact dermatitis, rashes, and also aggravate eczema and psoriasis conditions.

Coumarin: A derivative of cinnamon that is used in skin care products as a fragrance additive, despite the fact that it has been linked to some potentially negative health effects.

Coumarin has no known medical uses and has never been linked to any health or wellness benefits for the skin; it is strictly used to add a cinnamon-like odor to cosmetics products. Despite its lack of skin care use, beauty companies continue to include this chemical, even though recent studies have started to disclose how dangerous it really is.

Coumarin is highly toxic when taken orally, and even when it’s only applied topically it has been possibly linked to several conditions including:

  • Rash
  • Irritation
  • Sores
  • Organ toxicity
  • Liver damage
  • Cancer

Coumarin is banned in the EU and Canada from being used in beauty and wellness products, and it is under heavy regulation in the US. Many other groups have criticized the US’s continued allowance of coumarin, including the German health group BfR and the National Toxic Encephalopathy Foundation.

St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Facial Moisturizer Quality of Ingredients

St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Facial Moisturizer does not have the type of ingredient profile that our wellness and beauty experts tend to recommend. The main issue us that instead of using proven healthy products that work to improve skin wellbeing from the inside out, they use surface-level products that may temporarily make the skin look better but may also have a lsting negative impact on the overall health and beauty of the skin.

Safflower and soybean oils will probably not be harmful to most users, however it is also unlikely that they will be particularly helpful for anything other than making the skin look smooth directly after application, an effect that will mostly wash off in the shower. They would be fine secondary ingredients in a more effective product, but they are not to be cunted on as your main sources of positive nutrients.

The other products in St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Facial Moisturizer potentially have quite a few negative side effects that may be traced back to their usage, and it is somewhat surprising to see so many of them in one blend. Our reviewers do not recommend products that contain linalool, coumarin, or triethanolamine, in part because they do not have any true health benefits.

Fragrance, color, and texture are not good enough reasons for skin care companies to endanger the skin health or physical wellbeing of their clients.

The Price and Quality of St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Facial Moisturizer

The benefit of using such disreputable ingredients tends to be that you can offer your product at a much lower price, and St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Facial Moisturizer is no exception to that rule. Their product retails online and in stores for a price that tends to be similar to this:

  • 1, 10 oz jar of Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Facial Moisturizer: $5.17-$8.95

This may make St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Facial Moisturizer the least expensive daily moisturizing product that our reviewers have ever covered, however that is not to be seen as an endorsement.

Marvz says:

So is that mean St. Ives Collagen Elastin Moisturizer was not effective and unsafe to use?. I’ve been using this product for a couple of weeks, I felt little sting effects then gone for a couple of minutes. Also noticed my face blushes or become reddish… Please response. Thanx.

Mary Pennington says:

I’ve been using St.Ives for a long time and thought it was good, however, recently been having dry, irritable areas and some redness. Could this be why I have developed a dermatitis, the itching is worrisome.
