What is it?

Biossance is a skin care product that is designed to increase moisture levels in the skin, smooth out skin tone, and combat the free radicals that can damage the skin.

Its Revitalizer serum accelerates cell turnover and is formulated for rapid absorption. Biossance claims that many of their effects can be felt instantaneously, and that within a week 95% of women in their study reported softer, smoother skin.

Our panel oh beauty and wellness experts rank Kremotex as the top skin care product on the market.

Biossance Ingredients and Side Effects

Biossance does not choose to publish their entire ingredients list on their website. There are undoubtedly a number of inactive ingredients in their blend, and possibly other active ingredients as well, however this is the only component that they mention:

Squalane

Squalane: A lipid and emollient that is naturally found in small quantities in the body’s sebaceous secretions. It is thought to be high in antioxidants and may have antibacterial and pro-cellular qualities as well.

Squalane is a slightly more stable version of squalane, although the two are very similar. It was originally derived from a chemical found in the liver of sharks, although now there are olive-based and totally synthetic versions available as well. Biossance uses a version that is synthesized with a chemical derived from fermented sugarcane called farnesene and genetically modified yeast strains.

Though it is an active chemical in the body and has become a fad ingredient in skin care products, there is surprisingly little information about what squalane does to the body. The manufacturers of products that use it say that it is a miracle ingredient that has a number of benefits for the skin, however most third-party research, what little of it there is, is less impressed by its therapeutic properties.

It is generally accepted that it is high in antioxidants and functions as an emollient, however there is very little data that suggests that it has the antibacterial qualities that Biossance claims, and no evidence at all supporting their claims that it is “pro-cellular.”

Emollients are used to create a smooth barrier on the surface of the skin. This makes the texture appear even and healthy while also sealing in moisture, vitamins, and nutrients. They are not valuable from a core-health standpoint, however they are a useful part of most skin health blends.

Antioxidants are what the body uses to fight off free radicals – the harmful atomic formations that are created and released by exposure to UV rays, smoke, and other environmental toxins. Free radicals destroy the membranes of skin cells, causing them to become malformed and disrupting their tight organizational structure.

This causes the skin to begin sagging and to lose color and shine. It also becomes more vulnerable to UV damage because the less-dense skin is not as reflective. Antioxidants help prevent this damage, stopping the spread of free radicals before they can do their damage to the cells.

Most research at this point indicates that squalane is not an irritant to humans, and there is no evidence of short-term side effects related to its consumption. Despite the fact that we have known about its existence for over a century there has never been a study done about the health effects of prolonged daily squalane use.

Biossance Quality of Ingredients

Our panel of health and beauty experts cannot accurately analyze the effectiveness of Biossance’s ingredients blend when they do not publish it in total. Finding a quality skin care product is often about what is not in the product as much as what is.

It is unfortunate, but many manufactures use ingredients that have temporary effects that make them seem to be working initially but in the long run do more harm to the skin than good. Simple alcohols, potentially contaminated oils, and even lye are used all too frequently to trust that a product does not have them in it – especially a product that refuses to admit which inactive ingredients are in it.

If squalane is in fact the only active ingredient, then Biossance has a very limited ability to help the skin. Most successful skin care products will contain key vitamins like A, C, and E that help the body build and maintain new skin. They may also contain stem cells, amino acids, and key minerals that are part of increasing the overall health and wellness of the skin.

Fighting antioxidants is useful, however that is a response to damage that has already been done. They are far more effective when combined with ingredients that can help prevent that damage from occurring in the first place. Emollients are also a useful tool, but it is important that a skin care product not be reliant on effects that can wash off in the shower.

The Price and Quality of Biossance

Biossance is not sold in stores or through any independent retailers online; rather they are available exclusively through their website. As of the date of publication for this review, the price they were quoting was:

  • 1, 1.7 oz bottle of Biossance Revitalizer serum: $58.00

This is well above average for products of this type, especially ones with such simplistic ingredients lists. It is difficult to understand what would be in Biossance that would make $58.00 a fair price, as other products of this nature tend to be less than half this expensive.

They do offer a free trial on their website, which, unlike many other “free trial” offers found online only requires potential customers to pay shipping and handling and does not seem to enroll them in any form of automatic payment program.

Customer Opinions of Biossance

Controlling the distribution of their product so thoroughly means that there are very few bad reviews of Biossance where it is sold. There are, however, plenty of websites dedicated to consumer advocacy that display more reviews that are similar to these:

“I’m shocked I paid this much for a product that essentially does nothing.”

“I used Biossance every day for a week, and not only did my skin never get better, I think it actually got worse. My dryness issues got so bad I switched brands, and then things got better immediately.

“I was very disappointed. I thought this might be the answer to my skin issues, but it turned out to be just another bogus product that doesn’t do what it says.”

The most common complaint regarding Biossance was that it did not address key skin health issues like moisturization, redness, flaky skin, or color correction. Many customers were especially upset about its ineffectiveness given how much they paid for the product.

Conclusion – Does Biossance Work?

Our team of reviewers base their final opinion about a product on a number of factors. They look at the clinical data that is available for it, they look at the response from people that have used the product, and they analyze the ingredients blend.

It is very hard to analyze the ingredients of a product that won’t publish them, and it is also very hard to trust that product. Manufacturers that produce skin care products that they believe in are eager to post their ingredients list because they want to show that in a world full of companies that use dangerous and ineffective fillers that they are a brand that can be trusted.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to trust that Biossance is not using those poor quality additives. Additionally, the one additive that they are willing to promote is only able to address the symptoms of skin damage, it is not able to address the root cause or prevent future damage.

There is not enough evidence that Biossance can help a person’s skin, and there is also not enough evidence that it won’t hurt any individual user, for our team to be able to recommend their product to our readers.
