Lean 1 is a meal replacement shake that’s said to be great for fat burning and energy, all while being a well rounded nutrient dense drink. It’s made with 17 fruits and vegetables, and it has 20 grams of protein for either a snack, or a pre or post workout shake.

There’s many claims made about this shake such as it being delicious, well rounded for any time of the day, and made to promote healthy weight loss. Inside of it are many ingredients not often added to meal replacements. Is it really as healthy as it’s promoted? Does it rank well with customers? Pea Protein Isolate: A 90% protein by weight extract made from peas. It’s low in the amino acids methionine and cysteine.

Pea protein is also known to have purines, which can lead to gout. This is a condition that is caused by too much uric acid. People susceptible to this are often advised to avoid foods like pea protein. Live Strong.com adds:

“your kidneys may not be able to keep up, leading to the development of some medical conditions” 

Pea protein is often mixed with other sources of protein to make up for the lack of amino acids. 

Artificial Flavors: Man made ingredient used to provide a certain flavor. Because it’s not natural, it can be made from many different chemicals. It’s unknown what kind of an effect this may have on the body. 

Carrageenan: A gelling and thickening agent made from seaweed. Because of its potential for causing cancer, the University of Iowa states:

“widespread use of carrageenan in the Western diet should be reconsidered” 

Their analysis of this ingredient showed that it wasn’t worth using. There are far too many potential dangers according to their review. 

Xanthan Gum: Commonly used thickener found in many processed foods, it’s a combination of fermented sugar and bacteria.

  • Ringing in the ears.

It’s unknown how much caffeine is found in this shake.  It’s important to know this amount since adding any other stimulants can increase the risk for side effects.

Hoodia Gordonii: A shrub made used to help suppress appetite. Examine.com mentions:

Sucralose: Artificial sweetener that provides no calories. It can be up to 1,000 times sweeter than sucrose.

“induced DNA damage in gastrointestinal organs”

So in reducing gut bacteria it can potentially cause issues with the immune system. Increased P-gp is usually only possible when a contaminant enters the body.

It allows for foreign objects to be taken out of the body. It can also cause drug resistance, which can be a problem for those on medications.

lean-1One unique thing about the shake is the use of ingredients like green coffee bean extract. This is often added to weight loss supplements, and usually brands list the total caffeine content.

There’s unknown amounts of caffeine added. This can be potentially dangerous as you won’t know if you’re getting an excess amount.

There is a high amount of protein at 20 grams, though some of it comes from pea protein, which can potentially cause gout. Also, there’s cheap protein in the form of milk protein isolate and sodium caseinate. These are inexpensive to produce, and all together there’s no notice of the total amino acid content.

Knowing the amino acid amount is essential for determining if your protein is high quality.

There are also 17 different powdered fruits and vegetables. Though the product has added vitamins and minerals, which means most of if not all of the nutritional value is lost from these fruits and vegetables.

The kinds of ingredients used aren’t the best. You get ingredients that can be toxic like Hoodia Gordonii, and there’s also cheap protein added. The addition of green coffee bean extract is also not the best ingredient due to potential side effects.

There’s a high amount of vitamins and minerals found, but overall the lack of quality makes this an overpriced meal replacement.
